Golf Nutrition

Recommended Posts

Tried to think of a title that sums up what I'm thinking.

I come from a sporting background, mostly aerobic but intense. I've been playing golf most of my life and have had a manner of different food consumption plans over the years for a round (pre-round and during).

I wanted to see what people's plans are for a pre-round meal, and during to keep them sustained. My current course of action is to have something high in protein and/or a complex carb to get plenty of juice for a full round (oats, chicken, something of the like). That usually gets me through 9 sufficiently which then I have a banana and some sort of muesli bar. For any time I feel a drop in energy, I carry a container of fruit/nut mix. Also carried is gatorade as I sweat a lot.

Would like some opinions on (for the lack of a better term) diets to maintain good energy through a round.

I know it's probably not that exciting, but I tend to eat one of those Kind Bars for breakfast before I go out for 18, and then while on the course I have a banana. If I am walking, and it's hot I'll bring a Gatorade and water. If it's not terribly hot, I'll skip the Gatorade and just drink water.

I know, boring. But it works for me I guess.

4 eggs and a banana pre round, then a pb&j at the turn, drinking water with some sort of electrolyte pack mixed in throughout. works perfect for me, good topic!

Well usually I race home from work, jump in the shower, get dressed throw my gear in the truck and hope to remember a couple bottles of water. Usually got a few nutri grain bars or something kicking around the bag. Weekend it'll depend on the time of day whether I've eaten or not, so yea not a planner or healthy eater here.

Some sort of breakfast of eggs and oats before the round (if afternoon round then I’ve had several meals). On the course every 3-4 holes a snack of some dirt making sure nothing that will cause a spike in sugar levels and then crash later. My go to snacks are nuts, pbj, protein bar, fruit. I drink a gallon of water per day so I’m always hydrated and I try to drink about 16 oz every 3 holes, more if it’s really hot

Check out these protein shakes. They taste okay and offer a variety of flavors.

I always play at first light so my breakfast is typically a protein bar and a coffee/energy drink. Cant stop at the turn because it normally isn't open or doesn't have food at that time. If it is later in the afternoon and I know the round is going to be over 3:30 in length then I will have a banana or something at the turn.

Rice/pasta pre round. Protein shake sometimes. Steak/fish high in protein. During round I take water and an energy drink. I try to get a decent fat in take pre and post round too with nuts high in protein. In the morning I have cereal if I have it in stock at home with milk. As mentioned I struggle eating during the round, but happy drinking during it. If necessary I carry a few breakfast bars which are easy to consume incase I really need something on the course. I'm quite big on nutrition in general so I'm quite consistent whether I'm playing or not about fuelling up and staying hydrated. Fruit and veg is always something I forget about but has a habit on doing a lot of good for me and my joints for some reason - thanks for making the thread as realise I need apples and peppers in the household desperately. I don't like taking vitamin pills, pain killers etc so try to get everything from food and drinks

Walking in Tournaments

Grilled Chicken and Vegetables the night before for dinner. Start hydrating with water only that day.

Breakfast day of 3 eggs, Banana, 36 oz. water.

Between warm up and Tee off Banana and 16 oz bottle of water.

Small handful of nuts every other hole. Bottle of water every three holes. At the turn will have a protein bar or turkey lunch meat. May have a Gatorade Zero or Propel. Will not drink anything with sugar.

When Riding just water. Really not expending enough energy when riding to need to worry about the diet.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

I used to be a Burger King for breakfast, hot dog at turn, and sandwich, fries and beer after round. Stopped doing that a while back. Now usually couple eggs and water for breakfast. No coffee anytime I play. Protein bar at turn. Straight home for most part after round. Drink Propel and or water during round.

And why did this thread just move to Instruction & Academy?????

I've been looking into intermittent fasting but was concerned about when I play golf in the morning. You haven't had any issues with getting hungry or jittery?

2x Advil to limber up, hot dog at the turn, and a yellow gatorade throughout gets me through a round.

Not at all, takes 14-28 days for people to adjust, but after that period my blood sugar is much more stable throughout the day as opposed to eating from say 7 AM to 7PM.

Thanks! What is the window you eat in? Noon to 10 pm or something different?

Pasta night before, and start hydrating. 4 eggs, bananas, and tall glass of cold milk for breakfast- then hydrating more. Dried salami sticks in bag during round if needed, along with plenty of water every few holes. Looking into using Ensure 30g protein drink instead of salami sticks, but since carrying a bag not sure if I want to add more weight over the lightweight salami tubes.

Great topic, following for more ideas.

a.m. rounds, has to be a mix protein and carbs for breakfast. If I'm missing 1 or the other, I'll either get the shakes or fall flat midway through the round.

Along for the walk will be a mix of either nuts & raisins, or nuts & goldfish crackers. beef jerky as well on occasion. Tournaments, I'll definitely bring a p-nut butter sandwich along as well. I'd rather have extra food and not need it vs. be starving and have to buy garbage gut food at the turn.

Interesting topic. I like eggs and toast for breakfast pre-round if I have the time. During: nuts, water and high-grade IPA. I am also (due to the extreme heat in these parts) a big proponent of hydrating early and often. Overall, the morning toast and IPA is the extent of carbs for me. I've outgrown high-carb consumption...haha...

well depends if you are walking or riding. I mean walking, I could see running out of energy being an issue especially if carrying your bag too. Walking an entire 18 and carrying bag has to be a ton of calories.

I hear you. Why do you guys need all those calories? Walkers only burn about 700-750. Riders maybe 375-400.

I eat a bowl of oatmeal with some fresh fruit and I can walk 18 holes.

Water, of course.

Ive been carrying just about every weekend this season. It’s about 7.5 miles and burns around 7-900 calories according to my Apple Watch. I usually play in the morning fasted and eat when I get home.

I’m far from the picture of perfect health and I’m 42. Havent had a problem.

My mornings are busy, so I usually eat 1PM to 8 PM each day.

IF and any sort of fasting (after acclimated) is actually excellent for any sort of focus. I used to do morning cardio or calisthenics and afternoon weights on IF (cardio and calisthenics fasted, I had a small high protein and carb meal before the gym).

I wouldn’t advise you change your diet habits right here and now and hope for miracles by the weekend but, Intermittent fasting is pretty easy to catch on.

Don’t drink Gatorade. Ever. No monster. No energy drinks period. I drink water only with pink Himalayan salt for electrolytes if you need any and you should be killing at the very minimum a bottle of water during your round...and that is still considered very low.

Diet wise, don’t worry about it. Keep it to whole and nutrient dense foods. Just be consistent.

Lastly, if you drink during a round, keep it to spirits. Vodka soda lime is my go to. Beer is death.
