Sand Valley

Recommended Posts

Just played Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes for the first time on Saturday. First, humble brag; made my first hole in one on the 8th hole at Mammoth Dunes. Next, I was asked to review the courses for my buddies who were not there. I’ve included those, below.

Please note, this review was created for friends. Meaning it is not sanitized and is not intended to offend or create an arguement. That said, Mammoth Dunes was epic!!!!

Sand Valley Review

Obviously, I struggled (87). That was with a caddie. My caddie was not good. He was salty from the jump Bc he thought he had a double loop, but I was the only one in the group who took a caddie. He would advise what club to hit rather than the numbers and say stuff like "it might be a 6. Just feel it out." You can't tell me to "feel it out" bc, well I have no feel. He did read the crap out of the greens tho.

The course played firm and very, very fast. Greens were pure as can be and quick!

Both courses use this concept of no tee boxes. Rather, the fairway extends up to where the tee boxes would be. So, essentially there's no cut difference between the tee box and fairway. Really cool aesthetic.

I experienced Sand Valley much how I imagined y'all experienced Sweetens Cove, the first time around. A lot of shots that you thought would be good or ok, ended up on the wrong sides of ridges or slopes, almost ensuring bogey or worse. A good caddie could've helped eliminate some of that, but.... The course was severe and punishing. If you got out of position near the greens or on the wrong side of a slope, it was dicey. But, to be fair, it wasn't overly long or penal as it related to penalty strokes.

Overall, I think this course would be more enjoyable the more you play it. Understanding the intricate details and how to use or avoid them, would be key to enjoying the course more. As it is, playing it once or essentially blind, I think it's a tough course to fully enjoy, unless your expectations are in-line with scoring higher.

Good golf course and definitely worth playing, but not the best one on the property....

Mammoth Dunes Review

So, I had a Hole-in-One here and that obviously leads to a bias, however, I will say this was not only my favorite course on property but a very close 2nd to best course in WI (only trailing to Whistling Straits).

My one buddy played Dunes 3x and SV 3x this week. He said when he comes back up, he's playing MD twice to each round at SV. He also said he would put MD as his favorite course in WI, miles ahead of Erin Hills, Lawsonia, Blackwolf Run, Irish at WS and barely inching past the Straits course at WS.

The easiest way to describe the contrast between Kidd's MD and C/C's SV is SV had "rejecto" greens and MD had "recepto" greens. Where SV would reject shots and move them away from pins, I felt like MD's greens would allow you to utilize the slopes more to get the ball closer to the hole. Case in point, the hole in one.

Additionally, I felt like Kidd made a greater importance on playing the course on the ground, which really gave it a more linksy feel.

The elevation changes were more dramatic at MD, as well. I would say it had more memorable holes, too.

MD definitely is an easier course tho. At least I would say easier to play it once and get around it without too much pain.

MD was unbelievable and awesome! The way the course finished was awesome and I never wanted the round to end. When I go back, I will play MD's first and more often. From a fun standpoint, could be the most fun course I've ever played! 5

I hope this helpful! I wish we had been able to play the Sandbox and will absolutely the next trip up. Definitely a great spot for a long weekend or a buddy’s trip!

Made it up to our lakehouse right next to SV for a extended weekend over the holiday and did not play golf but made a trip out to SV as I always do just to take everything in. My wife and I love to hike and we decided to hike the new Bentley trail which runs near Doaks Sedge Valley Plot and let me tell you I will be very excited to see this course come to life. There are four huge rock outcroppings with some major elevation changes that I am sure will be incorporated into the design and I envision a gem. I believe this part of the property offers the most dramatic landscape. I have to pinch myself everytime I go out there.

There has been a bit of discussion in the forum above in regards to your question. Personally, I would go two at SV and one at Mammoth. Mammoth is a ton of fun and if I only had one round, I would play it over SV. However, I would play that course same way each time whereas SV is more strategic. The more you play it, the better it gets and the more knowledge you know where to play your shots or where to avoid.

If I could only play one it would be SV over Mammoth. SV is more penal. But I like that. Good shots are rewarded and misses are penalized. Mammoth is more generous. All tee balls are good shots, but some are rewarded more than others.

I am going to have to say I would prefer two at mammoth. I understand what you are saying that sand valley can be played multiple ways and that is a good reason to play a second round there, but I think I would rather have a second shot at going low on mammoth. I would want two chances at each drivable par 4 and a second chance at all the par 5s. If things bounce your way on mammoth you can easily post the lowest round of your life, which is something I’d want to take a second crack at.

@krtgolfing Did you end up going to Sand Valley as a single? If so, how was it? I have a similar setup where my wife is letting me take a trip before the baby and I don't really have any other golf sickos that would go.

Mizuno STZ 230 9.5* - LIN-Q Red

Pinhawk SLF 16* 3W - Acer Velocity

Mizuno STZ 230 Hybrid 21* - LIN-Q Blue

I did not make the journey to Sand Valley. Just decided to drive up to Pinehurst and go out there as I have only played the cheap options around there. So did the big Pinehurst courses and also did Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road. Need to go back and play the new Southern Pines.
