I've that dream once. The funny thing was it occurred during the years I wasn't playing golf. Since getting back into the game, I don't think I've had it.

As for the restricted movement theory, I can back that up. I remember one night having a dream in which I was trying to drink a cold, refreshing glass of cider on a hot day, butI couldn't get through the foam on top to the cider below, and the foam only got bigger and bigger.

I woke up and found I had been chewing on the blanket!

Probably the worse dream you could have is that you're going into the men's room, walk up to a urinal and start urinating. That happened to me once. Hopefully, it doesn't happen again.

Great thread!

I have a reoccurring golf dream where I find myself at a course I've visited many times and I'm unable to locate the first tee. I walk here, there and everywhere, anxiety increasing and none of my playing partners anywhere to be found. What makes it seriously weird is that I eventually find the tee box and then I proceed to be unable to find a tee, a club...all my golf gear just vanishes and I'm filled with panic.

In analyzing, my conclusion is a this all stems from my real-life fear of being late combined with my fear of playing in a slow group. :p

It's truly amazing to read that others have had such similar golf dreams as mine. Amazing. From a too-small artificial looking/feeling tee box "platform" that I can easily step/fall off of to there being a wall or something similar on either side of the tee box (and maybe a "chute" of a fairway to hit to), I never feel that I have room to make a swing at the ball. So I spend what feels like 15 minutes trying to find a spot on the tee where I can put my tee in and swing at the ball. I'm pretty sure that I'm never able to find that spot and am never able to hit the shot.

Dreams are never about what they appear to be.

As I noted upthread, this is a dream about the fear of impotence. It’s no surprise that it’s a common dream among men.

What we see here is how strong the impulse is to deny the real meaning of the dream. In other words, this thread is a textbook example of sublimation—transforming the social unacceptable discussion of sexual impotence into the socially acceptable discussion of golf.

Our defense mechanisms are amazingly robust.

Why do you say it's a dream about impotence rather than any other inability to perform outside of the bedroom, like trouble with performance at work or in personal finance or in non-sexual relationships?

Note the wife’s actions and comments. Also, the comparison to youth and it’s vitality.

It’s all before you, Grasshopper. You just have to be willing to see it.

OK, maybe the OP's dream, although are little kids usually present during sexual impotence and laughing at their father? That aside, my cramped tee box dream never involves my wife and I doubt most people's similar dream involves their wives. Are you suggesting that all/most cramped tee box dreams are about sexual impotence because that's how I interpreted your comment?

Why do you think you’re so resistant to accepting your own fear of impotence? What would happen if you accepted this?

I can see the impotence analogy, but that is kinda like throwing a dart at the side of a house. Loose associations are difficult to deny, impotence and aging go hand in hand. Also, fear and stress of a tee shot in front of people you do not want to disappoint, even strangers, is not unlike that fear with a partner. Does not mean though that this is the cause for the dream.

It’s certainly difficult to accept our fear of impotence. We’d rather explain it away which is exactly what our mind is doing with this dream as it transforms impotence into golf.

We should be kind to ourselves, embrace the fear, and move to a place of strength and acceptance. It’s a hard road but a worthy journey.

Exactly. Mr. Spicoli seems obsessed with sexual impotence and eager to believe that others should be too. Quite strange.

Plus, dream psychologists routinely say that the same type of dream (going to school or work naked, not studying for the test, claustrophobia, falling etc.) can have different meanings for different people depending on what is going on in their lives. I agree that any dream a man has about not being able to perform at something with his wife present COULD mean that it has to do with sexual impotence, but it could also mean something entirely different. And a dream in which the man can't perform a task where his wife is not present in the dream is less likely to be about sexual impotence particularly if he has other non-sexual areas of his life where he is failing or concerned about failing.

Last night I dreamed I was a raging bull, running through narrow streets full of men in casual wear sitting beside empty couches!

JK... Freud was so influential that he even inspired art movements so there is something to making these connections..

Your forthrightness is refreshing.

On an aside, Freud is very interesting when placed in a context of an interpreter or a skilled reader like a historian rather than a context of a scientist or a psychologist. (See Paul Ricoeur’s seminal book, Freud & Philosophy.) This is the Freud that has been so influential on artists and others with ears to hear.

I've heard an important way to decipher dreams is to go by how you're feeling...

With that key piece of information being a teacher w/o a Summer this year it SOUNDS like you are a bit overwhelmed and wondering why and where you're going to find your "me" time that you count on heavily to regenerate so you have enough to give everyone else.

Anyways HTH's either it's in the ballpark or it can lead you to what was in that dream for you to glean.

My gut feeling though is to get serious about making some time and or space for yourself to play, regenerate or both.

Hit em well!

I frequently have golf dreams...sometimes playing with friends or family, sometimes with famous golfers...but they all seem to go about the same. I'm playing well, then face impossible/ absurd shots.

Recall one from a few months ago...again, playing well, making putts etc. Finish a hole, looking for the next tee, then the caddy signals "over here" ...next thing I know I'm in an old factory or something, caddy tees up ball and I'm looking and must drive it out of the building, clear a wall, but go under an overhang. Hit several shots, all of which hit some part of the structure and keep richoceting behind me ?...caddy keeps teeing up another ball...usually wake up in a cold sweat about that time. The mind can be so crazy sometimes

I've had that same dream.

I used to be a terribly slow player. Wasn't easy to self-diagnose at the time but over some time I could see it. But at least my playing partners helped. :classic_rolleyes::classic_biggrin:

My dreams were versions of the same as yours. Usually standing on a narrow kitchen table. Needed to have the ball so close to me I had to have my iron almost vertical just to hit the ball.

And of course I had a window, open by maybe a foot or so, about 15 feet away to hit it through. :classic_wacko:

And of course my playing partners were like "C'mon, would you hit the ball already ?!?!?!"  :classic_laugh:

I've had this dream more than once.

I show up to the first tee and find that I am paired with my ex. Somehow she took up golf and is in fact now a professional.

I try to hit a shot and it's absolutely terrible. My ex then starts trying to give me a golf lesson on the first tee to fix my terrible swing. Worst part is she really knows what she's talking about, and is incredibly patronizing.

Yikes.
