So you own more than one iron set...

I swap mine quite often. I was changing my bag every two rounds for the past couple of years, but I've slowed down this year. I'm going about 5-6 rounds before changing my irons. My favorites are the TE EX-1, so it's harder to take them out of the bag for another set. I've been playing them for the last 8 rounds. Before that, I had the Rapture J-spec in the bag for about 2 rounds, TFT2003 for 5 rounds, and XL2000 for 3 rounds. I have yet to play X-20's or the GC Mids this year and the GC Mids are my favorite feeling iron, by far, in my rotation.

One set of gamers, and a few "guest" sets in case my dream foursome randomly shows up at my house and nobody happens to have golf clubs. lol

Iron sets I currently have....

Macgregor CB-92/VIP combo set- My gamers

Ping ISI- my forgiving clubs/gamers

1958 Wilson Dynapowered- my classic set

1954 Hogan Precision- my other classic set

1960 Hogan Power Thrust- in process of being built

1958 Hogan Saber- heads only still looking for shafts

KZG Forged Cavity Back- former gamers

I sometimes just want to get rid of all but one set but there is no way I could choose one of the other. The Mac’s, the Ping’s, and the 58 Wilson’s are all definitely staying at this point, the others will go on to someone else sooner rather than later.

I've got over 20 sets of irons, mostly pre-2000. When I play my modern set, I use either my Wilson Fg62s or Mizuno MP4s, although the fg62s have seen much more time in the bag this year.

When I play persimmon, I rotate sets each round, though I have some favourites, such as my Mac Muirfield 20ths and Wilson FG-J8s (FG17s for the Japanese market.

There are one or two older iron sets I play occasionally with the modern woods and wedges, such as the Muirfield 20ths.

Once I recover and start playing again, the MP14s I bought recently will also be used in both bags.

Then there's the three sets of irons I have back in the UK...

> What do you do with them? Swap them regularly? Have a travel bag and a home bag? (Are they the same?) How do you express your inner golf ho?

I've acquired at least 12 sets over last few years, wasted some money but the wide array of setups taught me what I like and why it works. So now, there's maybe 2-3 that really click but predominantly practice and play just one. My inner ho is now about setup of specs, static weight, shaft profile, nuances of grip weight and such. I know what I like in heads but things like sole design or offset carry a lot less importance. The next phase is hot rodding some of the good sets and making them great,

Mizuno MP32

Mizuno MP33 x 2

Adams MB2 Tour Issue (considering parting with these)

Ping S55 x 2 (1 set at home, the other stays at my parents house for when I visit)

Bridgestone J40 CB

Srixon Z745 (picked these up super cheap and trying to decide what to do with them)

Callaway X Forged 2013 x 2 (1 set that are the current gamers and other is a backup)

Bridgestone J15CB x 3 (my favorite irons ever)

I think that's a dozen sets. Through a lot of tinkering and experimenting I've gotten down to a handful of different shafts that work really well for me so some of these are in a build or pre-build state, and a couple of the sets I mostly use for just testing. I like to have a few that I can rotate in just to get a different look when I'm not striking it well. I'm about 10-15% hoarder/collector with irons, 50% don't see the point in buying irons new when you can get awesome sets at ridiculous prices, and 35% building is a big part of the fun in having so many.

always tinkering ...

2 sets of the same with different shafts, my mom's original Patty Berg starter set. A set from the early 40's from her uncle. A MacGregor Byron Nelson set from 1960 (birth year).

Lastly the MacGregor VIP TP63 Centennial Irons With Display Case, that have never been out of the boxes that I'm trying to get rid of.

I have four sets of irons (2-LW). The current set I play, one set for guests, one set of old MacGregor MB blades to take out when my ball striking gets stinky, and one set collecting dust. Won't bother to count the number of graphite driver pulls or sets of iron shafts collecting dust in a large cabinet or sets of wedges.

I have a few.

In the bag now Bridgestone MR23 CB

Back ups are Mizz TN87 and Ms203 followed by about 20 other classic sets from Japan and Hogan Redlines. Most are works in progress like - Founders 200 series, Daiwa 8201 and SS01 and some fuzzy ass Dunlop DPs. Most are muscle back. I've snagged some rare sets like Bridgestone Proisme and Yamaha Hal Suttons, various Mizuno MS, Maruman Conductors... When I was a kid I had no money and I bought just about every Golf Digest from 1992 to 1999. That's as close as I got to those clubs. Even when Ebay was a thing, I didn't even consider having more than one set - it is the indian and not the arrow (to an extent)... And now all those classic sets are pocket change. It's hard not to bring some of those poor bastards home and give them a little love. All I can say is god damn the USGA for their rule making a lot of those great classic sets untouchable.

Thank goodness for this forum. I've always been a 1 in, 1 out kind of person. Making sure I only have 1 bag set up. Buuuuut I just ordered a 2nd set of irons (MP5s). AND I'm really excited about the new MP20s that just got announced. I fear the sickness is growing stronger.

Well this has been an interesting discussion.

I have Apex Pro 19 4-P with my Obans.

Just got in Apex MB 5-P with the same shafts.

Probably gonna make some sort of combo and then just play the blades and sell. Feels like a waste to have two of the same.

I sold ALL the sets I have this year P 790's, Srixon, Ping G's etc etc. Got sick and tired of finding out they all basically play pretty much the same with the exception of lofts getting stronger and stronger and taking out the 3 irons and adding in multiple wedges..... So now I narrowed everything down to my old set of Golfsmith Tour Cavity Professional Grinds. Three thru SW with DG shafts. Of course they are much weaker and shorter but I've played some of the best golf of my life. When my playing partners ask what I hit and I say PW I also have to add "remember it's a 48* pw unlike your 43* pw". This whole idea of hitting everything longer and longer just got to me after a while. I want everything to go a specific distance with the exception of my driver and possibly the 3 wood. On a good note I don't have to watch my golf bag at the course and I added $4800 to my bank account !!

> 1. Hogan Radials. My first set, restored/refinished and (as I joke) the finest condition set of Hogan Radials in the world. They live in a bag in a shed pending better display options.

> 2. Taylormade Burner Plus's. My high school irons, recently replaced. I should note that one year ago, these were the only two sets I owned. They live in a box in the closet for either my dad if he wants to move on from ping zings or to sell to the high school coach to give to some kid.

> 4. Hogan Apex '99's. See above, but not rusting and groove-legal. They live in my California bag.

> 5. Wilson Staff Fluid Feel Tour Blades. Intended to be a shaft-donor for other projects, but I forgot the rule of shafts and Wilson heads ("Forget about it!"). Also in a box, also in the closet.

> 6. Hogan Apex Edge Pro's. My Finland clubs, that I just fired. Until this week they were my #1 gamers. They lived in my club locker in Finland. Will probably sell to my future brother-in-law.

> 7. 1951 Spalding Robert Jones Registered. My vintage set, matching a set of woods from my great grandfather.

> 8. Hogan Apex '03. Arrived yesterday, will go into play once re-gripped, will live in locker in Finland.

I have approx. 11 sets of Hogans of various age and condition - and I just added another (spare) set of 1999 Apex to the collection. I still play with a set of 1999 Apex blades, which I have owned since they were brand new. Best clubs I ever had.

When I leave the earthly fairways (and bunkers, water hazards, high rough, etc) I sure hope that both in Heaven or Hell, there are golf courses, if not, I'd rather go to Texas o:) >:)
