So why are so many recommendations for golf oriented polos?

OP - You mentioned dress pants in your original post. Dress pants like suit-type (wool or wool blend) and darker colors (navy, grey) or does that include chino-type of pants too?

 

I don’t think the brand is as important as making sure that you get a high quality, fine weave logo-less shirt that fits well. If you need to wear with dress pants, I’d look for fine-weave high quality cotton or mostly cotton blends in solid traditional colors that is well-fitted. If you can wear chinos, you can get away with both solids and stripes and some more vibrant colors.

 

I am a cheapskate and buy heavily discounted clothing. Many of my polos are from Columbia , PGA brand, Walter Hagen, Izod, etc. that I get for about $12 ea. and are logo-less or the logo is very small or on the sleeve. Others have mentioned Peter Millar, Vineyard Vines, Foot Joy, etc. which make very nice polos, but for my needs, they are too pricey. If you need that “Boardroom” look or brand recognition, everyone has provide good ideas.

More than what brand of polo you look into you should really be looking at which polos fit you properly. Additionally, find a good tailor, it's not too expensive to get polos tailored and a proper fitting polo looks way more professional than one that fits improperly.
