Tour pro giving back to the charity

How much do the pros give back to charity? How much will BK give back to St. Jude Charity? 2 million paycheck?

honestly...i don't think they are the ones who give the most. typically it's the organization that put on the tourney that week. brooks seemed like he cared about the cause -- i dunno, maybe 2% of his actual winnings/take-home...

I would think its probably private, but the tournament has already raised millions for the charity. A bunch of the guys were donating 1000 per birdie made JT being one of them, and some I saw donating more cash per eagle. But I would guess through all the profits generated through the tournament a decent share goes to St. Jude. Plus on their website it states FedEx have donated 43 million to St Jude since 1986.

 

Cant see BK donating back the entire paycheck he just earned though. I don't think I've ever heard of any athlete making a donation that large ever. Could be wrong on that though... most of them just start there own foundations to raise money to donate for a charity that's close to their hearts.

Players are under no obligation to 'give back' any of their winnings. The tournament bodies themselves are the ones that raise money for causes associated with the tournaments, if applicable.

 

With that said - many golfers have 'foundations' in their name that go a long with causes they personally care about. But dont be fooled - it also helps with taxes, investments, and moving money around. Take that as you wish.

Agreed. Also - The ones that aren't doing it for PR or stuff like taxes or anything else like that - just to give to charity - will keep it private.

The people who are really ‘giving’ to these charities are the ones in the army of volunteers that run the event. These people do it for the love of the activity and get nothing in return beyond a golf shirt and commemorative pin. Absent these people, that $2M winner’s check isn’t possible.

Agreed...The folks that are really helping, we probably don't hear about. Read somewhere that Ricky is on many speed dials. He does a lot to fund raise by just being Ricky. Most of the well known men pro's have some type of foundation and raise millions. I'm sure the ladies use their fame the same way.

Not exactly. When you sign up as a volunteer you usually get the option to specify which charity gets credit for your time/ service. Depending on the tournament the charity then gets a not insignificant amount after the tournament depending in how much is raised.

Its always been 50 to several hundred/volunteer and/or committee. Every volunteer usually works 3or4 shifts of 4-8hrs. Weekends are usually longer shifts.

 

I know many groups that bring in multiple volunteers to support the tournament. A wide range of incentives have been used to "encourage greater turnout". When 50 to over 100 volunteers help out, the charity gets a really big check. Many charities are benefiting from a tournament in ways regular fundraising and charitable support never could. Some charities even pay it forward to the local communities after receiving this support.

When a pro 1st joins the tour, they are taught to give back to the community and causes near and dear to them. Yes there are financial advisors who point out the tax incentives and benefits. However, other advisors also teach how they benefit during to after their playing career is over.

 

Fyi, there are multiple charities on tour besides the individual player foundations/ charities. If its a group on the tour there's a charity/ scholarship -player's wives/so/gf, caddies, officials, greenskeepers/ maintenance, etc.

Many players do keep their charity private but will talk about it when they are interviewed. Ernie Els is a great case. His is son is autistic and he and his wife established multiple autistic support via Els for Autism Foundation.

Tiger Woods has donated his entire winning check to his foundation many times....I may or may not be correct...If I'm incorrect I'm sure some goofball will correct me. That's his own tournament of course.
