Patrick Reed or Danny Willett

Recommended Posts

Who has had the better career to this point?

Each has won a Masters, and 5 other events on their respective tours. Before you denigrate Willett for winning on the Euro Tour, 3 of Reed's wins have come in lesser events like the Wyndham, Humana and the Tournament of Champions.

I'm European, but in terms of consistency and how they are regarded (ie. top 30, top 50 etc) in terms of the world's best I think Reed probably takes this one - to my mind he's been a world top 40 player for six years or so - Willett hasn't been since mid 2016 (but thankfully is now showing signs of regaining that form)

As much as I hate to say it, Patrick Reed. Reed was a beast at the 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cups, and he beat Rickie, Spieth and Rory at the Masters last year. In addition to that I think his overall game is better. Willet shot a great final round at the 2016 Masters, but come on if Spieth didn't sh** the bed on holes 10-12, this wouldn't even be a debate.

the data

Patrick Reed's 5 PGA Tour wins

WGC Doral 76 (first place OWGR points)

Barclays 74

Tournament of Champions 46

Wyndham 44

Bob Hope 40

Average 56

Danny Willet's 5 European Tour wins

DP World Championship 52

Dubai Desert Classic 48

Nedbank Challenge 38 (yes an Euro playoff event can be worth less than a Bob Hope)

Omega European Masters 32

BMW International Open 30

Average 40

add The Masters (100) to each and Reed leads 63.3 to 50

Both have 3 Top 10 in majors

Reed has a 2nd in the PGA and a 4th in the US Open

Willett has two T6th in the British Open

No other international wins to consider, their performance is major international team events needs no explanation.

Let’s boil this down in simplest terms.

Reed vs Willet. 10 matches over 10 straight days. You can choose the player to back. But your life is dependent on it. Best out of 10. Stand full of fans watching. Are you choosing to back Willet ? I’m not.

I think Reed is the better/more talented player, so maybe Willett has more of his abilities so far?

I thought Reed would have won more than he has, but there are lots of players in that bracket.

Reed has $25m in earnings....Willett has $4m...is this even a question?

Reed has debatably played harder fields and placed in the top 25 consistently, regardless of 'wins'.

Willett has made way more than $4 million. His total career earnings from the ET are just under 15 milion Euros. Willett has barely played on the PGA Tour. Reed has played for more prize money than Willett due to purse differences between the PGA Tour and the ET.

Though I don't like him all that much, Reed has had the better career (adding on Ryder Cup success). Not sure where either are going with their games though.

You have a much different definition of lesser events than I do. I think of fall tournaments or opposite field events Puerto Rico, Barbasol, or Barracuda as lesser tier events.
