Online Lessons - Convince Me

Recommended Posts

OP,

Unless you come from a golfing family or have a single# index to hold your hand, everyone's first step at trying to understand the swing starts with golf mags, youtube videos, and swing advice from some random at the range, which ruined all of us... it was free, but it really wasn't.

Then books, trying to learn a motion as complicated as the golf swing through words/ 2D blurry black and white pic's sucks.

So you seek a video series, but you need an extreme amount of time/discipline to go through this.

Everyone went through this already, that's exact why when you were asking about the video series the majority was recommending you to go straight to a online lesson.

These pro's can fix something in 10 mins that might take you 10 years to figure out.

I was never expected a video to be the equal of an in-person lesson, but for couple of reasons that really aren't important here live lessons aren't something I can do regularly. Since I do spend a lot of time at the range with my kids, I was thinking (hoping) the videos could give me something to work on while with them. And I think the series has done that.

For the reasons I stated in my original post, I was skeptical about the value of an online lesson. Now that my concerns have been pretty much alleviated (well maybe not alleviated...I'm still skeptical but based on the overwhelming response here I'm willing to think my skepticism is misguided), I'll most likely give one a shot...now I just need to decide who.

You are going to really enjoy the lesson, range time, and golf more for sure.

For me, take from Dan or Monte 100% percent... both are different in style of online lessons but a win either way.

I’m aware...that’s why I gave it so much weight. And he and Monte are really the only two I’m considering for the lesson because of all the cred they have around here.

As long as you are open to any and all options, Waldron too has quite a bit of WRX credibility. Plenty of very credible options off-site too, like Bradley Hughes, Gankas, etc.

All wonderful coaches I'm sure, but I have no objective criteria for making a choice. Heck, the only one I'd recognize if they asked to play through on my local muni is Monte, and that's just from the video.

I am going to try online. For $50, i figure its worth it and perhaps it'll help with my issue with my driver. My driver is all out of whack and if i can get someone to take a look, diagnose and provide some drills, thats cheap. I have taken in person lessons and they helped but the cost, drive to the facility etc. is getting prohibitive.

I just had my first online lesson. In fact, it's the first lesson I've had since 2000. I submitted my video to @MonteScheinblum on rebelliongolf.com and within a week I got "the results." At about day three of waiting, I started checking my email like a kid waking on on Christmas morning to see if I got it in yet - I was very anxious. When I got the video yesterday morning, Monte was very succinct and matter of fact. Prior to sending the video, you have an option to give a note with it of whatever you want to say. I'm a very analytical person (it's what I do for a living) so I sent Monte a detailed list of what MY observations were to see if they match up with what he was seeing.

Of course, Monte is the expert so he noticed things that caused the problems on my list (which I thought were the problems themselves, but they were just the symptoms). He broke it down what's happening, gave an example of what the proper motion should look like, then gave drills to fix the problem. This last point to me is important. I'm able to make changes fairly quickly (relative to this sport, anyway) and it's important for me to have drills - not just "you're doing this wrong" or "do this instead." Monte gave me drills and four videos to watch to ingrain what I need to work on in addition to a write-up summarizing the lesson. Those videos were:

Hip turn and knee flex: [https://youtu.be/ihedpsV15Us](https://youtu.be/ihedpsV15Us "https://youtu.be/ihedpsV15Us")

Extend at the waist: [

Lay the shaft down: [

Thumbs up, thumbs back drill: [

Now you might say, "but I can just go through @MonteScheinblum 's social media and watch these videos." YES, you can. You can also go on Google and diagnose yourself with munchausen syndrome or measles. However, if people could just find the videos they need and fix their own swings, we wouldn't need golf instructors (in-person or online). However, someone like Monte can see what you're doing which you may miss, and they can be objective about your swing. You've seen your swing a million times, you'll miss the details - I guarantee it. Even if you haven't watched your swing a million times, you've felt it so your own prejudice of what you feel vs what is real will cloud your judgement.

In short, BUY THE DANG LESSON.

I can confirm that it is worth the price of the lesson just to have Monte narrow down what you should be working on. I self-diagnose myself with multiple issues every day.

I've been struggling this year, like the previous two I went with Monte and really got a lot out of what he had to say. Online lessons from these guys are about the cost of a round of golf, you really got nothing to lose in giving it a try.
