Twenty so far and three in the top ten, all in Ontario.

Thinking about a little trip to B.C. Looks like Predator Ridge, Tobiano, Capilano, Shaughnessy, Victoria and Royal Colwood.

Any highlights on that list or things I should think about?

Just a heads up that Cap, Shaughnessy, Victoria, and Royal Colwood are all private.
I was a member at victoria for a couple years and I'd say its worth it to try to get on. If you got a good pro it shouldn't be too much of an issue to get on for outside play, can't speak for the other three though. Probably add sagebrush to that list too. And if your on the island you could throw bear mountain as "worth" it too.

Thanks guys,

Well aware they are private but shouldn't have a problem getting on, but do respect the privilege of it if it all comes together. I have heard great things about all of them and obviously we are talking about some of the most beautiful areas in the world.

We have some great courses in Ontario but the scenery in B.C. is every bit as spectacular as the Alps or any other region I have been to.
Awesome, yea I'm mad I never made it over to Shau or Cap when I was at VGC, it was a little tough cause I was a student without a car but I still regret it. I got a buddy who is a member at Shau so I may try to make it out there this summer.

I was a big fan of VGC 7 through 10 are just great. Some people think the rest of the holes are a little meh comparatively but I think most are very strong from design standpoint and make you think your way around.

32 of the top 50 and 49 out of the top 100.

In all honesty The National, Cabot Links/Cliffs and the Devil courses are the only ones I really want to play that I haven't. There isn't a course outside the top 30 I'd go out of my way to play unless I was in that area.

There are some extremely bad golf courses ranked extremely high on this list (VGC is a crime at #28 and 2 spots up on Wolf Creek...) Canada should really just have a top 50 list stretching it to 100 cheapens the list, we don't have the quality for 100.

For example:
48 in Canada: Copper Creek (I mean no offence by this; I've never heard of Copper Creek...)
48 in US: Spyglass Hill

74 in Canada: Sunningdale
74 in US: Bandon Trails

100 in Canada: Black Bear Ridge
100 in US: Streamsong (probably would crack the top 10 in Canada quite easily)

My personal top 5 in Canada (that I've played):

1. St. George's
2. JPL
3. VGC
4. Shaughnessy
5. Capilano

I have played several out west: Tobiano, Blackhawk, Greywolf, Predator Ridge, Wolf Creek, Stewart Creek, Windermere, Northern Bear, Tower Ranch, Eagle Ranch, and Heritage Pointe. Tobiano is one of the most amazing courses I have ever played, well deserved ranking. Blackhawk is so overrated its not even funny. Its likely not even top 20 in Alberta, and definitely not the best in Edmonton, let alone all of Canada. But Score Golf loves it because they wine and dine them pretty good. The best course in Edmonton is not on the list because they don't let them play (Royal Mayfair). Someday I want to head out east and play some golf...

have played Tobiano, Capilano, Shaughnessy, Victoria, the two Bear Mountain courses, and Sagebrush.

Unless you have reciprocal privileges, the unaccompanied guest rate at Victoria, Capilano and Shaughnessy will likely be around $200.

Personally, only Victoria and Sagebrush are worth that much. Victoria because of the beauty of its site, and Sagebrush because its unique and totally fun.

Sagebrush is closed, and may not open this summer.

Tobiano is great, but tough. Bear Mountain (Valley) is fine; didn't like the Mountain course because it was brutally difficult.

It seems the current owners don't want to put any money into it, if they are about to sell it on, even though they'd theoretically sold it already last year :-S

Also sagebrush being closed is crazy, that track is very appealing to me.

The 2016 issue will be out soon, can't wait to see where Cabot Cliffs debuts. From the 2014 list, I've played 7 of the top 10 and 57 of the top 100. I'm still relatively young at 33 and hope to play all 100 by the time I'm 50. Fortunately, I have a lot of golfing friends with access to the top private courses and a very understanding fiancé.

Spoke to a GM at a club, and he said that one year he handed out over 50 comps to ScoreGolf raters. His course came in in the high 70s. The next time around he didn't hand any out, and the course was out of the 100. Get a good connection with the powers that be and you too can be a rater! But I've just never understood why a person in the media is more qualified to rate golf courses than, say, at least a quarter of the membership here.

Yea it's wild, imo the GolfDigest top 30 is a far better representation, too bad that it's only 30, 50 would be nice but I don't think you need 100 up here

Tough to rate a course if you can't get on it to rate it.

This applies to private obviously, I would hope a rating wouldn't change on a public track because they had to pay a green fee. Most private courses, I would imagine if they let you on at all because you are a rater they would usually comp it. Again though, it shouldn't have any baring on the rating.

Do you know if the course you were speaking about had enough people rate it to qualify the year it fell out of the top 100?

There were enough to make the list, but the numbers fell significantly from the year before. Wonder why that is? It came in at about 110 the following year. Only thing that had changed were the comps. This was during the time when course construction basically dried up as well, so it's not as though new courses came in and created an issue.

There is a difference between "I can't rate it because you won't let me play", and "I won't rate it well because you made pay." This will not have a bearing on ratings the moment every person that sets foot on a course fixes every ball mark. Which is to say, never.

Yikes, I've only played one of these (#18), gotta get out more to visit my Canadian family and make a trip of it :)

First tell your Canadian family to move to Nova Scotia ;)

And I look forward to what you'll be listing for sale soon.

Cabot Cliffs definitely deserves the new #1 ranking IMO. Great piece of land and a dead solid routing

All the other courses that come in near the top every year have more pedigree but are not quite as good ie The National, St. George's, Hamilton, etc

I also agree the rating system is a total sham

I have played quite a few of the private courses on this list. The National is the best golf course in the country , period. There is also something really special about Mount Bruno , I dont believe the ratings committee was able to get on until recently or so I was told. If anyone is able to get on you will understand why ......The Course has a Shinnecock / Winged Foot canvas to it. Rosedale is just so special in it's own way......The location , the conditions , the sheer beauty of the holes, the history just has that " je ne sais quoi " that is hard to quantify.
