Titleist 718 vs. 716

Do you think Titleist's recent release of their new 718 irons will be more successful than their release of the 716's in 2015, or do you think the release of the 716's was more successful than the new release of the 718's?

Good question. I think the release of the 716's was more successful than the new release of the 718's. Ok there is a new AP3 but 716s AP2, AP1, CB or MB are perfect.

I liked the 716 cb more, 718 ap2 looks better imo. Play the 718 mb, but I've never hit the 716 mb. I doubt they are very different though.

I held up 718 ap2 to 716 ap2 and I see absolutely no difference in topline or sole size

Great post. I tested my 716 ap2 against 718 ap2 extensively at my club. Outside using trackman. I then went to club champion Same shaft. Same 6 iron. Zero and I mean zero difference. Personally I like the new badging better on 718 but for performance there was zero difference. The guys at club champion flat out said they’ve seen this across the board and they’re pretty unbiased about make and model of clubs they sell. They’re more into the shafts.

Hit every gen of 718 AP2 and very similar

I played 716 AP2 since they came out, and now the 718 AP2 both with same shaft. I prefer the look from address of the 718. I see some say they are identical but the 718 have a bit thinner topline look (by that the topline is shaved slightly different on the backside to give it a thinner look {read that somewhere}, it may be the exact same width, but the way it's shaped gives it a thinner look, especially PW and 50* are noticeably thinner topline, and straighter leading edge give them a slightly thinner profile look), and I believe the feel of 718 when struck solid feel better. But I got the 718's at the end of our season so I can't say they are better than 716 over all. But I did gain about 1/2 a club, but granted I switched from overlap to interlock grip. Not that made the difference but it did change a few things in my swing so maybe that helped add a few yards in distance.

 

I'm one of the few who actually liked the look of the 716's when sitting in the bag when they released. But overall I think at address the 718's are an improvement visually.

I played 710 and 714 ap2 for a couple seasons and I think 714 were the best feeling ap2 followed by 710. 714 had that muted soft feel compared to other gens when they had more of a click. The 718 to me don't feel soft/muted like the 714, they have more of a firm hard hit, not all that clicky compared to past but more a firm hard hit. I think thats due to the steel face being used now.

 

712 had the thinnest profile from what I remember, those were the first clicky sounding ones too

Hit the 718 AP3s today for the first time and they were long...super long. Im definitely considering the upgrade at this point

I have both. The 716 wedge is 48 degree ..the 718 is 44 degree. So on and so forth..that is the reason for lower flight and more distance. In my opinion its a scam by titleist selling you on looks but not telling the degree switch. I am back to my 716 ap1 for higher flight. I am currently 8 handicap.

It's subjective. I own 716CB's and recently considered buying 718CBs. They claim 718CB's are more forgiving. I asked myself is that a good enough reason to buy them, the answer came back as "no". My motive in buying them in the first place was a bit more forgiveness than my MB blades. I got what I wanted. I am sure Titleist modified 718's but it appears more cosmetic.

I just ditched my 716mbs for some 718ap2.. I tried the 716ap2 and have to say the 18s are so much better.. not sure about the MBs but happy I made the move

The leading edge grind on the 718 AP2, like the CB range, is really nice. I love that companies are starting to do this in their designs more.

I think that the 718s are going to be overshadowed by the new releases.

Titleist does a good job of sticking to product cycles but the decision to move on from the very well-established AP1 and AP2 lineups is a curious one. That said, there was almost no difference between the 716 and 718 lines (particularly the CB lines, which were basically a cleaner-looking 714 AP2, complete with the same amount of tungsten) so it was time for a change.
