Tickets for The Open 2021?

wmblake2000

Recommended Posts

I just read in the thread about next week’s Open that 2021 will be at old course and the 150th Open. I am thinking that might be worth going to, but after a brief google search, am totally unclear how that might work. But a first golf trip to Scotland/Ireland capped off with going to that Open would be awesome.

What is involved to getting tickets/lodging, etc? Thx....

You can do it yourself which would save some money but be much more difficult or go with a tour operator that can tailor to your needs.

Celtic Golf and Perry Golf come to mind

Buy tickets next year, contact some b&b directly and ask about it. consider that the closest one will probably only accept reservation for the whole week.

Please note just for your info that since because of the Old Course layout and terrain it's not the best course for viewers experience, land is pretty flad and since it's very narrow spectators are allowed only at the outer border of the course.

That's interesting... I went to the Masters in 2018 and went on Monday which was great because I mainly wanted to see the course. Going to St Andrews is more about being in the scene, 150th history, etc. During practice rounds, do you get more interior access to the course? I was also wondering if some of the hotels, etc have some overview (balconies?) of the course.

Tickets will be available about a year in advance from the open website. Unlikely to sell out and usually walk up tickets are available on the day. Portrush being 'sold out' this year is a unique situation as they havent hosted for so long no one has any idea how access and accomodation will work out so they are being cautious.

Access is the same on practice days as on championship days - as said before because of the layout of the old course with essentially shared fairways and double greens then most of the spectator areas are on the 'outside' of the course. Saying that you can get super close to the the tee boxes etc.... and you do get good sense of the course just by walking round it.

Hotels with balconies viewing the course- only the Old Course Hotel for that really and I am not sure its available to the public - I suppse a back view out of the Russacks might do but again unlikely anything will be available for mortals.

Thanks very much for the info. I hadn’t considered this until today. I am due a golf extravaganza and I am thinking going to Scotland, Ireland and to the Open even if viewing isn’t great.... just to be a part of it. I have only been to the U.K. to change planes so it’s time to do it.

Not my first choice of viewing venues as mentioned by imakavelli - if it's a once in a life time type of trip, you'd be better off playing it, which should not be too difficult depending on whether you are alone or in a group. Plenty of great golf around though, and Ireland is also fantastic.

It's got to be said that from a viewing perspective, St Andrews is the worst course ever for getting to follow the golf. As pointed out above, you spend the entire time stuck to one side of the course and the big double greens make it very difficult to see what is actually going on. All of that said, it's St Andrews and it's The Open so it is still incredible and 2021 is going to be insane.

Things may change in the lead up to 2021 but for 2020, the best way of getting tickets in advance was by joining The One club. That opens up priority tickets and they keep you in the loop with regard to when the tickets become available.

See you there in 2021!

Yeah I was actually thinking the same thing. Been to Scotland twice, 83 and 2001. Fabulous experience both times. I had a friend on the 83 trip wanted to go rent clubs and play the Old Course. And though I was a huge golf fan and player back then, I was more into the women. I do not regret passing up that opportunity and in 2001 we were there in March.

If I had the chance to go back during Open week I would do it like you suggest. Maybe spend one morning hanging around the practice facilities but for the action hanging out with some good food and drink, watching on big screen.

One thing I would add which unfortunately I have never done, take one of the Whisky Tours. Though not a huge Speyside guy, just seeing how it’s done, the old fashioned way has got to be a lot of fun. Plus all the small towns are great fun roaming around with friends. Obviously the countryside is breathtaking.

Haven’t been to The Open, but if I went that’s where I’d like to go. Probably just stay not too far away for a couple days and maybe catch one day of the tourney as part of a trip that would likely be focused back up north. St. Andrews is a great town - tons of info on the UK forum that was and still is a terrific resource for me. Sitting on 17 sounds like a super idea but after playing the course I wondered where anyone was allowed to watch - definitely would be a challenge so not surprised access is limited. Tough call and just musing for now. We are headed back in about 10 days for two weeks in Troon/North Berwick areas so our travels may need a year or more off, lol.

Driving range is usually the 1st and 18th of the jubilee course - on the beach side kind of parallel to the 2nd/3rd hole of the old course. Its where the New and Jubilee courses start and finish beside the links clubhouse (the actual visitor facility)

I dont think that map even gives you enough of a perspective of how bad it would be - thought this one shows how much it is really squeezed in there.

My brother and I played there last summer and I cant imagine there is much room for fans anywhere - unless they let you walk just the perimeter.

Hmm. All this commentary about spectating realities - on one hand, being at any pro tourney is never really a way to watch a tournament- crowds, lack of info about what is happening elsewhere, etc. On the other hand, I’d really like to have a feel of the Open at St Andrews. So maybe the way to do this is somehow play the course either before or after (if possible!) go to St. Andrews maybe one day during tournament and the rest of the time play elsewhere in Scotland, Ireland. Sunday at St. Andrews might be really fun. The main question this plan raises is how far ahead or after the open do they make the course available for public play?

Does that sound sensible?

I wonder how you find out what the window of course being closed to public play around Open is? I have understood the town is a great place!

?? You reckon? I've been to more Open's than I can remember and I've always either paid the golf+train offer (if its on) or paid at the gate. Portrush is the first time I have ever heard of an Open sell out in advance.

They seem to be going that route with the sale of tickets the last couple of years. I wonder how many people they will feel that they can sensibly cram in at St Andrews. All being well, I will be there for a practice day and one tournament day. The Practice Day just to see some players reasonably close and the tournament day for some play and the atmosphere.
