Chromesoft split in half! (w/ pic)

I was on my 11th hole with this Chromesoft when it split! I was hitting a 9 iron and felt like I flushed it. I looked up and saw it sputtering and just fell out of the sky.

 

I’ve been playing Chromesoft for about 7 months now and first time that’s happened, but it should never happen! Glad it didn’t happen during a tournament or money game!

There have been a number of reports of this here is Australia, which I agree should never happen. Though I have been a Chromesoft user for over 2 years and have not experienced it myself, the thought/speculation here is there was a bad batch that has come through the system. It should be noted that all the reported examples here have been with the white ball there have been none so far with the truvis or Yellow ball

I think you get to replay the stroke if you break the ball.

Yes, but only if it breaks into separate pieces.

The USGA and R&A should have addressed that in the latest rules revision. We are beyond balata and cut covers and into the era of solid balls that crack.

Seems fine to me as is and I don't see how the details of the ball construction has anything to do with it (balata vs modern). If it stays in one piece, there is no confusion over where to play the next stroke from. If it doesn't stay in one piece, then there is would be potential confusion so the rules have you replay the stroke.

 

What is it exactly that you think needs to be addressed?

In the balata days, cutting a ball was always a risk for a bad swing and I can see how you'd have to live with the resulting shot and replace the ball before playing the next. Cracking the ball, from the descriptions given, would seem to be due to a defect in the ball that would result in strange ball flight. Doesn't seem right to penalize a player for something like that.

Update - Callaway is shipping me new balls.

I have had several balls (including Chrome Soft balls)do that after hitting them 100+ times into a practice net. However never on the course.
