My 10 Year Old's Bag Is Better Than Mine And That's OK

Recommended Posts

Earlier I did a WITB of both my bag and my son's. Since then his bag has seen a 100% overhaul while mine has stayed the same so it seemed logical to give him his own thread. A little background, he is verging on 10 years old in his third year of playing golf. He plays local and statewide tournaments and PGA Jr. League and has improved tremendously over this year. As he has grown we were faced with a conundrum of whether to put him in another set of mixed adult head/junior shaft driver, fairway, or hybrid and junior irons or make the leap to modified adult clubs. With his size (60") and swing speed (70 MPH average) we decided, after a lot of discussion, to go ahead and make the move and what you see is the fruit of our labor and research. Each club was chosen with a lot of thought and research and has been spec'd out to 60" height. I can tell you that this has been more rewarding than anything I have ever done with my own clubs.

**Driver**

Callaway XR16 13.5 coupled to a Project X 4.0 Women's Flex

He had the Callaway head previously and controls it well and gets decent distance so we kept it from his old set and moved up the shaft.

**Fairway**

Cobra King F6 3/4 coupled to Matrix Red Tie 55Q4 Women's Flex

Previously he had a BioCell 3/4 Fairway head and really trusted it so we wanted to stay in the same vicinity so simply went with the update. So far this has been an amazing club for him once he figured it out.

**Hyrbid**

Cobra King F6 4/5 coupled to Matrix Red Tie 55Q4 Women's Flex

Same as the fairway as he was previously in a BioCell hybrid.

**Irons**

Cobra Amp Forged 5-PW coupled to MFS 58+ Senior Flex

This is where things get really interesting. Irons were always going to be the most interesting decision in this bag and these happened to fall in my lap from a fellow member here. He did a great job building these and I was very fortunate to be able to pick them up. The general consensus is you do not want your junior hitting GI irons as it gives them a false sense of feedback and I totally agree with this philosophy as he is now really learning how to hit a ball much more pure. These have taken some getting use to but he is now growing very confident with them, particularly in the scoring irons.

**Wedges**

Cleveland RTX-3 CB Wedges in 50, 54, and 58 coupled to Cleveland Golf Action Ultralite 50 Women's Flex

These wedges are just amazing. We have seen a vast improvement in his ability to hit his spots and hold a ball on the green with these and they are available for an absolute steal. Did a little paintfill work to cover up the pink accents!

**Putter**

Nike Method Core MC-07W Oven Prototype with Rosemark Grip

He found this in my putter stash and immediately wanted to try it. I had the shaft cut down to appropriate height and he prefers a Rosemark pebble grip over anything else. Very unique putter but he actually does better without a sightline.

> Very cool! Setup seems dialed in for someone of his swing speed. Did you make any changes to length?

So I should of been a bit more clear in the initial description. Including making sure every shaft was within a certain range for weight and flex every club has been shortened to meet USKids 60" Height specifications. So his driver is 40" long all the way down to his 58 degree wedge which sits at 33" finished club length. He is 58 1/2" at the moment so he chokes down just a bit. His former set was spec'd out to USKids specifications for a 54" tall player so it was a bit of a jump but he is adjusting nicely. As well, the biggest difference we are seeing is much more consistent spin and ball flight with these clubs which is to be expected.

IMHO you did a darn good job specing them out. I like the part about CBs giving him a false sense of security--- Yep those Cobras will give him feel and feedback

I appreciate it Stu! A lot of people throw together a set with the expectation of making it easier to score when as a junior the whole goal should be developing their game for the future. The Cobra's give him enough forgiveness to shoot fine but at the same time he is already realizing what the difference is in hitting the sweet spot or not. I am by no means advocating sticking a junior in butter knife blades but I think a good forged player's club lets them really learn, at that formative age, how to really hit a golf ball. Plus, from a simple mental aspect my son loves walking up with what he refers to as "real clubs" instead of junior clubs and he likes the smaller head shape of the forged player's iron.

Yep that is pretty good but I will add one suggestion for practice purposes only--- Set him up with say a butter knife blade 8 iron and 5 iron. When I say set up I mean with the proper weight length and shaft like his gamers. I practice and play a lot with persimmon woods and blades. For me it makes hitting my modern metal driver a no brainer. But yep you have him on the correct path to develop instinct and feel

There was some break in time to the new clubs but it really fired him up to be out there with adult clubs and now he is more confident with them than he ever was with his junior clubs. Big reason I wish OEM's would get more serious about junior golf and quit simply making box set toys. We all know there is a mental push when you go out there with OEM major sticks!

Golf is such a funny game he did not like the graphite shafts in his irons he hits his new irons with Apollo junior steel shafts so much better. I am going to try and take photos of both our bags tonight. How did you get in trouble for having your signature up like mine lol. We are still searching for a hybrid. We have one in mind I just need to get the money for it. A matching Cobra Max 5 Hybrid with a Flynn Golf Hybrid Junior shaft in orange.

@Shanks2424 A mod messaged me that it was to long and was taking up to much space....

So far my son has liked his set up and has not really said there is anything he is wanting to change. The only club he is really "struggling" with is his hybrid; however, hybrid has always been tricky for him. Since that is the case we are experimenting with a Callaway Uitlity X Protoype this weekend. Interesting to see how it goes! How does your son like the Max Irons? My son is finicky on irons so he likes them small and compact.

I think the reasons the Major Manufacturers do not take junior clubs more seriously is because the market is not there. Very few Fathers take their kids start in golf as serious as you guys do which for both of you is a good thing. If I had a kid starting out at the age Blocton's kid is I would taken the exact same route equipment wise as he did. Actually with those heads if he likes them the set can be updated with different shafts etc as he grows in height and strength.

He likes them but I might make a change next season to something like the amp forged but we will finish the year with this set.
