Driver length flex weight for smaller junior ?

Recommended Posts

My son - Jack- who is 7 is playing much more golf, in tournaments etc now. He is heavy/strong for his age (70lb), at jr worlds we saw kids who were 8 using extremely long shafts with adult clubheads bombing it 200. . Was tough to see him lose a full 50+ yards off tees. Im not a golf expert and want advice between chasing extra yardage and helping him develop a great long term swing. He has outgrown his 33.5" TaylorMade phenom driver. Looking at Flynn golf shafts that fit OEMs as well that VT Max driver as well. Any lighter OEM driver heads out there? The US kids driver feels too light for him.

Cobra junior worked well for us at that age with an extra shaft to grow into. Don’t think we used anything different from about 8-11. He was never short against our level of competition. Only recently have we found a need to chase distance as the competition gets tougher at 11-13. We just now got a real driver fitting looked at ball speed and switched to a TP5x for longer drives. Wasn’t needed until he got over 85 mph SS.

There are a few threads on this if you search archives. At age 7 (he is 8 now), my son moved from US Kids Tour Series (2) to Callaway XR16 (189g I think) head with a ladies recoil shaft (44g uncut i think) cut to USKG spec (maybe +1"). Tested longer shafts but swing plane & accuracy were clearly off. XR16 is one of the lightest OEM's out there and still a very good driver. Lots of kids in the 7-8 year old range use it.

If you were at IMG Junior Worlds playing in the 7-8's keep in mind that some of the 8's might have been nearly 9 years old. In your case (7-8 YO), the junior can not be 9 years old by July 11th, 2019. There can be some pretty big differences between 7-8-9 years old.

As far as drivers, here is a good read: https://thejuniorgolfer.com/kids-golf-driver/ I'm a fan of Cobra drivers and would look at the F9 Junior (or prior model F8 Junior to save the bucks). Cobra includes one free shaft upgrade with purchase of new club. The Cobra Junior shaft is a Fujikura Fuel model and weighs in the low/mid 40g's.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

> Thank you! . Yes jack just turned 7 and and assume some intl. kids may be some fudging of birthday (cough cough) or essentially 9. He is 70 lb but only 51" so worried about even the 39 inch shaft is too long USKG suggests 35-36..

My kid is currently 52.5" tall with golf shoes on (just happened to take a measurement last week). We've been playing the 39" Cobra shaft since we was 50" tall with golf shoes on. Just choke down a bit. This may or may not have been good for him because he has yet to get any free equipment, sponsorships, invites to select tournaments, win a world championship or receive recruitment letters from the Top 5 college golf schools.

This. The XR16 is just a such a natural head for a junior. Couple it to a Flynn shaft at your son's age and then a ladies flex shaft later on. The other thing not mentioned is that the XR16 is very forgiving and comes in a 13.5 loft which is a big deal. Furthermore, don't freak out about a couple of kids poking it out there 200 at Worlds. Kids develop differently, it is never a good idea to measure your child's ability and tracks based on what someone else is doing.
