Callaway Steelhead XR Irons

Anyone still playing the Callaway Steelhead XR Irons?

I just put my set I got from last year on eBay. They are incredibly forgiving. Almost too much so. I don't think I hit a thin shot in a year and a half with them. Amazing distance too. The AW in that set is money.

I switched from the XR to G400 irons. In the short irons, for me, XR had too much offset and the shafts were too light.

Sorry, but I hated them. The feel was terrible. Had them for 2 months and dumped them.

I seem to have a love-hate relationship with these irons. When I first demoed them I was in love with them everything went straight until after I purchased a set. After about two months of struggling with these irons I was about to get rid of them until I change the grips to a heavier grip.

Lately I’ve been having distance trouble not sure if my 7-iron is going to travel 160 yards or 180 yards?

 

I was hoping for the magic I had with my old X 14s

 

It also seemed that Callaway after 6 months dropped the price of the irons by $200.00?

I had a set for a while and really liked them. Not sure why I switched, just hoeing around I guess. They are full GI but with less offset than most. And the 5 was a rocket launcher. I actually hit over a few greens with that thing.

That's why I dumped them too. Flew too many greens too often. Played really well with them except for fliers. Also, finish was really really bad

love my steelhead irons very forgiving the ball really jumps off them.

They are bright polished stainless steel and scratch up easily. Made for the showroom. In the real world a brushed finish (or chrome) stays looking nice much longer.

Cheap ass Callaway should have chromes them

I know nothing about them and never hit them but the model stands out in my head because it had a crazy high rating on the Maltby chart if i remember correct.

I had a set, they did feel a bit harsh but they were super forgiving. Unfortunately I did nuke a few and flew some greens (even from fairway lies). That is why I got rid of them. I have a friend that still plays a set and he likes them.

Traded my original XR's in for the Steelhead XR's but after a couple months I sold them & repurchased another set of original XR's. Just couldn't get along with the Steelhead's.

After a year with the Steelhead XR Irons I am tired of the hot springy faces. Fliers from the rough and especially in wet conditions. Ok, that is for me acceptable but when fliers occur from good fairwaylies it is not funny. Also bump and run shots are more difficult to control. These irons are soon history in my bag.

Yep, I like them, well not so much the 6 iron it slices right on me. I don't really have issues with fliers like most mention either.

I had them for 3 years with the project X 6.5 in them. I loved them tbh. I did get an occasional flyer but the forgiveness was amazing. I defiantly recall hitting a toe ball or two that I could feel with a GI iron and it was only 10-15 yards short of normal.

I love mine. I am not able to practice as much as I like but still carry a 10 handicap because of their forgiveness. I just club down from the rough because they always produce fliers. But as mentioned above, they do feel like cast iron on anything but a pured shot.

The Steelhead XR iron models came and went too soon. One problem was the Pro version - the black finish simply wasn't very durable and the irons got beat-up look quickly.

 

A similar thing happened in 2014 with the TaylorMade SLDRs. Great irons, but never got a chance. In my opinion, the SLDRs performed just as well as the follow-on RS series. (I tested SLDRs and wrote a review; they are now base of my backup bag).

have 3-9i with XP95 stepless in a backup set, agree with what a few above said about the long irons being very long on well struck shots, even when not struck dead in the middle you get good distance.

when you get up to the green and you need the accuracy of a scoring club, XR Steelheads are quite difficult to use (compared to CF16 Apex/Apex Pro)
