European Tour vs PGA tour tv coverage

KRAMER1997

Recommended Posts

I was watching the Irish Open a couple of weeks ago and I noticed it was refreshing to just watch golf for a change and not have to hear Gary Mccord or some random CEO blabbing to Jim Nantz about how they love golf. In fact during a European tour broadcast, you rarely ever see the announcers and they tend to show more golf then CBS or NBC does when they cover the PGA tour. Why can't the PGA tour cover golf the way the European Tour does? Also, the European Tour has been killing it on social media with videos like the 14 club challenge and the hickory challenge.

I think that most of us agree that PGA Tour coverage is much worse than the Euro tour coverage. In my opinion this will not change until the folks broadcasting the events in the US realize that golf fans are knowledgeable, and resent all the extra stuff that they pack into the coverage: Konica Minolta swing biz, etc. I think that the US broadcasting team thinks that their golf audience is larger than it actually is, and they need to both "educate" and 'humor" us.

You are right. The US coverage is getting stale. There are too many announcers, each trying to justify their existence in the booth, or on the course. For comparison, Rich Gannon and Judy Rankin do a superior job for the ladies tour, just the two of them. There might also be one on-course reporter. This is a case of less is more.

I have made the same comment on the Tour de France. Two knowledgeable people in the booth, one guy on a motorcycle, and an ex-racer that they call in for tactics once in awhile.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

With the new PGA Tour schedule salted away the top item on the agenda is the new tv contracts for 2021. Things could stay the same, but I suspect things are about to change. CBS could be replaced by FOX on PGA Tour coverage. (especially with the Viacom merger going ahead) The PGA Tour could buy the Golf Channel and move everything there. (say goodbye to your Euro Tour coverage) Or they could go the Netflix/ Disney +/ WWE Network route and head for the internet.

Interesting times ahead.

NBC already owns the Golf Channel and has since 2010 or 2011.

That doesn't preclude the PGA Tour from buying it, if the price is right.

The European Tour has always been better to watch, back to the good ole days of Renton Laidlaw. I think it's a culture thing? PGA Tour is way over commercialized - they show less golf, talk more, prop up "superstars", and advertise more. Euro tour to me has always been laid back, the courses are more interesting, and the coverage centers around the game itself, not the game as entertainment... if that makes sense

Euro coverage makes US look good by comparison. Like I said in another thread Euro coverage is just two dull sounding guys mumbling on about a subject - golf - they know nothing about.

Yeah but I'd rather have that than 3 commercial breaks per hour, a 10-minute chat with the CEO of the tournament sponsor, and constant reminders of who's leading the Fedex Cup/Wyndham rewards standings.

Blimp Shot, plinky plonky music, talking head, leaderboard, plinky plonky music, floppy cock advert, blimp shot, talking head, tap in 3 foot putt, FedEx Cup standings, plinky plonky music repeat ad nauseum. How they make a boring spectator sport more boring with the amount of technology that they have at their disposal is quite amazing.

Comcast has completely owned Golf Channel since the early 2000's. Comcast has owned NBC since 2011. Comcast moved Golf Channel under the NBC Sports umbrella after Comcast took control of NBC.

Euro Tour coverage is awesome, the guys are super knowledgeable, Sam Torrance or Thomas Bjorn are in the booth quite often, and one would not question their input. PGA tour has better strength of field, maybe, but that stops there.

The Euro Tour coverage is not shy about showing whole groups walking around the greens or walking down the fairways. Not sure if that is a product of less cameras or what but there are times when I have watched it and thought, "Did they run out of guys hitting shots?" (Also thought, "Where are the spectators?")

My favorite stuff to watch on a golf tournament are the player-caddie conversations. This may sound dumb, but I like to see the guys warming up on the range too. Not just blasting balls but actually on them long enough to get an idea what they are doing to warm up.

I like the swing breakdowns when done sparingly.

CBS is the only network I have a problem with here in the States. I watched the U.S. Women's Amateur this past weekend and Fox did a great job with the coverage.

Maybe not. PGA Tour is a non-profit organization. The Golf Channel is a for-profit entity. Not sure how the latter could be owned by the former. The Tour is threatening to go the Netflix/ Disney +/ WWE Network route and head for the internet, but I think that's a massive mistake.

People continue to not understand just how expensive live sports is to produce and broadcast. Its not just the commentators and the cameras - that's actually the small part. The highest costs are the costs of paying the sports league for the rights to broadcast their events. And as long as PGA Tour events are going to put up purses in the $7-10 million range each week, the costs of producing the TV broadcasts are going to remain high. TV networks are still businesses, and in the end successful businesses are in it to make money. TV networks dont make money if they dont sell commercials. And network TV hours during the afternoons on Saturdays and Sundays are some of the most expensive times for the networks, because they are usually broadcasting these expensive sporting events, whether its golf or something else.

You want fewer commercials? Welp...the PGA Tour needs to lower the costs of its business then. We've already seen tournament sponsors start to drop out because of high costs.

The European crowds are much better and tolerable also. They're not yelling get in the hole after a tee shot on a par 5 or other moronic phrases.

More golf shots and less babbling would be a good start. They need to stop acting like their paid by the word. I recall one time a player and caddie having a very interesting discussion about how to get out of a bad situation. It was a great discussion except someone in the booth kept babbling over the top of the discussion. Between the constant babble and commercials every 5 minutes most televised golf is intolerable.

I find myself watching considerably more European Tour golf as I find the courses more interesting, the commentators talk less and there are fewer commercials. Over the last couple of years, the only PGA Tour golf I watch is final rounds. Otherwise, I just catch the highlights.

Was going to make this same thread this morning but I'm glad it already exists bc that means that there are more like me.

I'm a huge Euro tour fan. Better courses (Crans-sur-sienne, Valderamma, Wentowrth, the UK and South African courses, etc etc etc), better coverage, and more interesting players. In fact, I find myself rooting for Europe in the Ryder Cup bc I like all the players better.

Frank Chirkinian was the previous CBS golf director in the control booth. He knew how to put on a telecast. I recall Ben Wright saying he got scolded by the guy for talking too much. He was told unless you have something to add to the shot - shut up. Obviously Nantz never got the memo. The euro coverage does a great job.

To quote Michaleen Oge Flynn, "Go away you traitor, you!"

Actually I love Euro Tour golf as well. I wouldn't go so far as saying I want the Euros to win the Ryder Cup (but doesn't bother me a whole lot if they do, at least over there - it's good for the event for it to be competitive). I rooted for Stenson to win all his matches but didn't get too wrapped up in the rest of it the last time around.

But, as far as coverage goes - I like the ET announcers, they do a great job but sometimes I wonder if it was as marketable or as popular over there if their broadcasts would turn into the same kind of stuff we have to put up with. I like to think not, but in the meantime definitely enjoy it for what it is. The restraint is especially nice watching in the wee hours or early in the morning.
