"Off Season" Schedule

Completely on his own and unprompted my son came to me yesterday asking that we not take such a long break from Golf this year for the "off season". We have year round golf weather but the last few years we have almost completely shut down after Worlds for up to 5 months and moved on to Football, basketball, etc. Like most on here I am a firm believer in multi-sport and hyper conscious about burnout. During the golf season (March-July_ish _for us) he practices or plays in some form 3-4 days per week with about 1 multi-day tmnt per month from spring through Summer...4-5 total per season/year. He will def still play football, basketball, then probably soccer through next spring. Curious what level of "off season" golf has worked for others?- practice, casual play, tmnts?

Depending on the age. I would ask him to help plan his offseason.

1. What was off this season. ex. scrambling 35%.

2. What went good. Ex. Driving accuracy probably dont need to be at the range with driver all day.

What are some goals for next year? How can he get there?

Does he need to get stronger? Give him 4 or 5 exercises to do nightly. Amazing what 20 "bodybuilders" can do for a kid.

I think my son knocks his stuff out within 30 minutes.

You can never go wrong with some causal golf with father and son though.

Even when he is not competing, which we are about to enter that stage, he plays a relaxed practice round with his friend/playing partner basically every Sunday afternoon and we hit the range prolly once a week. He does not do an additional sport as of yet but has expressed interest in perhaps playing basketball this winter which I am fully in favor of.

I have no idea what an off season looks like. We live in Socal so the weather allows for golf year around. Probably for the last year or so my kid has only been golfing. Tournament or practice rounds on saturday or sunday and range work 3-4 days of the week with short game practice in between. He plays other sports at school if that counts. Could burnout be a factor- Yes. Am I afraid of it?- No.

My big thing with burnout is if the kid is asking to play or practice you should be good. If you are having to push the kid to play or practice you are not good.

I hear ya, your boy is self driven to golf year round and still going strong. Thats great. We can golf year round also. During the season we limit golf to 3-4 days/week , no doubt more would make him better but he does "good enough" to be competitive and have fun for his tournament lineup. All kids are different , but for my kid I notice that anything more I will see diminishing returns....quality vs. quantity,etc. The "Off season" we've taken in years past is more or less forced - an effort to keep it well rounded and hopefully keep him interested and loving the game long term. Again, just my kid...they are all different. This is the first time he has come on his own to ask for MORE golf...believe me I am thrilled ...its a good thing. Football (fall), Basketball (winter), then Soccer (spring) will be 3 days/week as well...throw in School and daylight savings restrictions and there is not much time to work on golf....which is kind of the point of pulling back. I am thinking casual weekend rounds with ol' Dad to keep the rust away and the occasional local tournament to keep him vested on improving may be a good plan.

We are about 6 weeks from the off season. My oldest is a kinesiology major. He recently bulked up to 200lbs. Wants his brother to put on some muscle.

We definitely do an off season. This year, we have only played 1 tournament in the summer. We were too busy in the spring with baseball and summer all-star baseball. Since March or so, we are still getting out to the range or play 9 at least 1-2x/week (some more some less). We are planning to play a Fall Tour here in Bay Area and probably will play basketball also. When January comes around, we go back into "off season mode" as we will be likely finishing basketball and preparing for spring baseball again.

 

I wouldn't worry about the golf rust. I am a believer in giving pre-puberty juniors as much experience in multiple sports as possible. "Repetitive Stress Injury" wasn't just something made up out of the blue for fun and I have heard several anecdotal stories from other people I know about its effects on a young athlete who specializes too early. After puberty, if the junior wants to give it a go at golf as their lone sport, then have a go at it. In any case, if your kid is athletic enough, they can pickup a club after 3 months and get their swing in order in pretty short amount of time.

One thing I know about your son is that he loves the game and has a great group of kids he plays with. Burnout isn't a factor imo.

If they get burnt out the get burnt out is the way I look at it. They will let you know when they need a break and when they do, give it to them.

Again like a lot of you we live in Texas so golf pretty much year round but we also play others sports such as basketball. During our fall when we don't play or practice as much work on things like strength, speed training, making swing changes but we also have a home setup that allows to practice with out trying to rush out to the range before the sun goes down (also have a range now that has lights). I would say if you can get playing/practice twice a week in that would be good during an off-season. Last year we did take about 6 weeks off of no golf no practice nothing turned out to be a really good thing. Breaks are good from anything you do but I do notice that rust can happen faster in younger kids than older ones.

We live in south Alabama and my son recently started playing golf. (About 3-4 months ago) before that he has played baseball since he was 4. He is absolutely consumed with golf right now! It’s all he talks about. He is getting so much better week to week and is going to play in his first tournament (a USkids) in October. So I’m not real sure we will have much of a break this winter.
