He can go on with Jack next year. Jack can hit one down the middle and with everything on the line Greg can push another 4 iron right.

And really, I was a huge Norman fan when he played and anyone who watched him a lot learned what the heat of battle can do to the best of the best at times. The show he put one just getting back into it on Sunday in '86 was scaring us Nicklaus fans pretty good and I still remember getting everything organized, food plans set, viewing comfort assured for what I thought would finally be his Masters coronation in '96.

My oldest daughter was only 3 1/2 in '96, we watched some of her favorite movies that Sunday morning, took a walk, etc. because the one TV we had at the time was mine once The Masters came on (and we always did that stuff anyway). This I recall because the next year she'd heard me talking about this kid named Tiger and was fascinated by the name, and he was a "kid", and she'd putted around a bit on the course by then and she became a lifelong Tiger fan starting with the '97 Masters and a dedicated little golfer, lol. Still have the sleeve of Wheaties Tiger golf balls my wife bought the cereal for and did the old send in the box tops as a little project with our daughter (just holding them for safekeeping for her at present).

Oh well, that's a little far afield, but honorary starters win at Augusta National, period and guys with 5+ majors are legitimate legends in the game of golf no matter how you analyze it. Just not a matter of reasonable disagreement.

Glad you can decide for everyone what is subject to reasonable disagreement

In this particular case, there is no REASONABLE disagreement. 5 majors or more, the list speaks for itself and under any reasonable definition of the meaning of "legends of golf", those guys are within it, lol.

5 majors would be a lower standard than that of the honorary starters for the last 40 years. All of them had more than 5 majors except for Byron Nelson, who retired at age 34, holds some of the greatest records in golf history, and won the North & South and the Western Opens when those were considered major level. So your arbitrary standard of 5 majors is subject to reasonable disagreement.

Just talking legends of golf, don’t see anything about starters in the above. So no, anyone with 5 or more is hands down a golf legend and not even saying that’s a minimum requirement.

But, since Watson and Faldo are hands down legends and have won at Augusta they would be wonderful choices.

But you just keep dancing every time you paint yourself into a corner. Uh-oh, now I’ll get another “abuse”, lol.

You do realize this discussion thread is about honorary Masters starters, don’t you?

Faldo is only a legend if you consider Ernie Els and Vijay Singh golf legends, because that is his level.

Wow, keep plowing that same old ground again and again? How many majors they have? And if someone wants to call them legends have at it, arguments can be made.

And yes this is also about starters and they haven’t won The Masters - and ............ that’s been covered X100.

I’ve seen kids stuck on merry go rounds but reading it is novel.

Enjoy - I’m dizzy!

Faldo has 6 majors and 3 masters including back to back wins.

Ernie has 4 and zero masters

Vijay has 3 and 1 masters

He’s not on jack level but only TW is really.

So we are back to talking about Masters starters and not just who are legends of golf?

How many majors would Faldo have won if he played the prime of his career during the same years of Tiger’s prime?

This I recall because the next year she'd heard me talking about this kid named Tiger and was fascinated by the name, and he was a "kid", and she'd putted around a bit on the course by then and she became a lifelong Tiger fan starting with the '97 Masters and a dedicated little golfer, lol. Still have the sleeve of Wheaties Tiger golf balls my wife bought the cereal for and did the old send in the box tops as a little project with our daughter (just holding them for safekeeping for her at present).

All of them had more than 5 majors except for Byron Nelson, who retired at age 34, holds some of the greatest records in golf history, and won the North & South and the Western Opens when those were considered major level. So your arbitrary standard of 5 majors is subject to reasonable disagreement.

If the Sioux had AR15s plus Spiderman and Wonder Woman . . . . . . . . . . .

If the Bulls had 5 Michael Jordans . . . . . . . . .

Seriously, come on. You were doing better when you just went in circles. ;-)

Just say, "Faldo sucks" and let it out man.

Call was great! I can totally see him as a honorary starter some day. But, I don't think this really needs to become a thing. I would be totally ok if the masters committee for a few years decided not to have any, or have people that were not even pro golfers but had a big influence on the game. It's their e vent, let them do what they want.

It’s extrememly unfair to rule out Faldo based on his record at the Masters - overcame the largest deficit whilst shooting the lowest round of the day, won back to back. As somebody else mentioned only Arnie, Jack and Tiger have won more. His record equals Snead, Mickelson, Player etc, and he has one more major than Phil which everyone is screaming for if that’s so important

A lot of Americans aren’t fans because of his single mindedness. Some even claim Norman should get a go ffs - now imagine if Norman had won three times the clamour would be off the scales. Same with Seve if he were alive. It would be a shame to rule out Faldo based on a popularity contest

I think Watson with Faldo eventually joining with some form of recognition for Seve would be fantastic. Perhaps a green jacket on an empty chair on the tee box? Not sure maybe that would open up a can of worms on second thoughts. Maybe just do it the once for him, the first time with Faldo

I think when Jack can't do it anymore or even player (but player has looked after himself brilliantly) Watson will step in.....about 3-5 years time is image. Wonder who would be along side him in say 8 years time? Faldo perhaps? Would have loved to seen seve start off the masters

That's funny. Player is a nut job.

If Faldo is ever named a honorary starter I couldn’t argue with the pick. I just have my doubts that it will happen. Those arguing for Faldo point to his playing record, and on that basis he’s in. It just seems to me that the decision makers at ANGC are looking to honor more than a playing record when naming an honorary starter. I can’t define the qualities they are looking for, but I recognize them when I see them in the starters they have chosen. Snead, Nelson, Sarazen, Arnie, Jack, Gary. I see it in Tom Watson. I don’t in Nick Faldo. That’s why I think there is a good chance that once Gary and Jack retire from the role the decision may be to end the honorary starter ceremony.
