New Driver Shaft Suggestions

ParsForDays

Recommended Posts

So I'm currently playing a Matrix RUL 70 X-flex shaft in my Titleist 917 9.5* driver. I love the driver and don't want to replace the head just thinking about a new shaft. Overall, I like the feel of the RUL as it's very smooth. It's a mid launch/spin/bend point shaft, 76grams, 3.1torque. I hit it very consistently with tight dispersion and like the feel of it, but I would like to change two things: higher launch, and lighter weight. I feel like I'm struggling to get enough height with this shaft, and it does feel a bit heavy so that may be robbing me of distance. About me, I have a fairly quick transition and about a 115-120mph swing speed on average, maybe 6-8 handicap. I generally prefer shafts to have some feel to them rather than feeling too boardy. Looking for something with a high launch profile, low-mid spin, weight in the 60's, fairly low torque, and with good feel. Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks!

I play the Tour AD VR in a 60. It states it is a lower launching counterpart to the AD IZ, but it does launch fairly high. You might give it a try. Look into shaftshack.com if you haven’t heard of them already. You can rent a shaft for a few days to try it out for around $20 or so. I bought a shaft from them, and they are great.

Any one have experience with the Tour AD DI? Was thinking the 6x might fit what I'm looking for?

Honestly everything sounds pretty ideal in terms of your relationship with the current shaft, I would just find a 60g model. Either that or get a slightly lighter weight for the head. Higher launch can and should be achieved just by lofting up slightly instead of changing shaft. The tricky part is that if your dispersion is already tight, changing weight might impact that, potentially negatively. Having an accurate setup that you want to make lighter to swing faster is a classic recipe for swapping your 280y drive in the fairway to a 300y drive in the woods. That may not be the case for you so it is still worth trying, but I wouldn't go hunting for a different shaft. First try lighter weight in the head before anything else as it is the cheapest option. Don't even change the loft yet as the weight can change your release and thus your trajectory. Then change loft if you're still not satisfied. THEN start looking at different shafts with the 60g RUL being the first recommendation.

To add some detail in case you're not familiar with the link between shafts and ball flight, a shaft can only physically change one thing directly (dynamic loft) and a few other things indirectly without accurate predictably (club path, strike point, angle of attack). The properties of a shaft that can change dynamic loft directly (forward deflection) can be more reliably realized by simply changing driver loft. The other things are difficult to predict and thus warrant experimentation. Once you already like the feel and consistency of a shaft, it is unwise to throw it out trying to chase something that can be realized through easier and cheaper (or in this case free) adjustments. Also, given the above notes about a shaft can affect, trying to find high launch with low/mid spin out of a shaft is another wild goose chase as multiple factors need to change to create this. A shaft can only directly change dynamic loft, and with more/less dynamic loft comes higher/lower launch and more/less spin in direct proportion. Strike location need to change to raise launch and lower spin and a shaft's ability to influence strike location is indirect and inconsistent from player to player. Any marketing that claims to decouple launch and spin (most commonly high launch/low spin) is only marketing and is technically dishonest.

For reference, I have played two other shafts in this head as well with the following results...

Fuji Motore F3 60-X: Weight felt good when swinging, with similar trajectory to RUL70. However, feel was not great to me (feels dead), and I was very inconsistent with it. Anything but a perfect swing would result in an downward spiraling left hook. This is not a problem for me with the RUL or really any of me other clubs.

Aldila Rogue Max 65-S: I didn't buy this shaft, it was just the stock shaft in the driver so I messed around with it on the range. Feels alright but no control. Obviously with a 115-120mph swing speed, this just isn't stiff enough for my swing, and has too much torque. Did launch noticably higher than the other two however.

Interested in either a Tour AD VR6X or DI6X. Previously have hit multiple GD shafts in other clubs, and feel has always been great to me

by the sounds of it either of those are good fits for you. Ive always wanted to try the VR but haven't yet, DI is always a great choice. You mentioned looking for low torque tho and I wouldn't consider either of those as "low". I think they're both 3.2 - 3.3

I have an Accra TZ6 75g that's a high launch/low spin monster. Torque 2.1. I know you're looking for the 60g range so might not be what youre looking for but with your speed you could handle it. I top out at 112 mph SS

or like you mentioned wanting higher launch, staying in the Graphite Design range id go with the AD IZ over the VR or DI. I have one in a 3w and 5w and its the smoothest shaft I've ever swung. Definitely higher launch but penetrating due to low spin

I guess by low torque I was thinking sub 3.5, so low 3's would be fine. My RUL is 3.1 I believe and that feels about right to me. Just trying to stay out of the 4+ torque range. Good info on the IZ, I'll have to look into that.

Aside from shaft torque not really having a standardized measurement, I would say take a look at the Tensei Pro Blue 60, Diamana BF 60, Fujkiura Ventus 6 or Speeder TR 661, Aldila Rogue 130 Black 60, Project X Evenflow Blue 65, or Graphite Design Tour AD DI or AD MT,

If you like the feel of graphite design, give the TP and IZ a try for sure. Those are my 2 favorite shafts from them hands down, I haven’t had the chance to hit the VR. I just love the way graphite design describes each section of the shaft, gives you a better understanding of what to expect.

  • 2 weeks later...

In a surprising turn of events, I went in to try some different shafts in my 917 driver with only the intention of reshafting the same head, and ended up with an all new set up. Ultimately switching from a 9.5* to a 10.5* loft had to be done to get the higher launch I missed, but I did go to a lighter shaft as well. Now playing a Titleist TS3 10.5* with a ProjectX EvenFlow white T1100 65g 6.5x flex at 45" and loving it so far! Much better trajectory, and in turn longer drives with similar dispersion. They even got me on a matched TS3 15* wood with the same shaft in 75grams ?
