Where to move after college?

Recommended Posts

I’m going into my final two years of college and want to start planning where I’d like to move to when I graduate. I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life and just really want to move somewhere that I can play year round. I like to play in lots of am tournaments so good local tournaments would be a plus too. If you guys have any recommendations of areas, as well as specific public or private clubs with great facilities, I’d love to hear them.

I'll second the Phoenix area. There are few places that you can play golf year round and are reasonably affordable. Phoenix, in my opinion, is the only one that I would choose. Sure, it gets hot, but 105* with no relative humidity vs. 90* with 90% humidity (see: Texas, Florida, or anywhere in the Southeast) is not a contest; dry heat wins out every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And, Phoenix, being one of the largest (by both population and area) cities in America has a lot to offer, including one team in each of the four "major" sports leagues. And, you get the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which is nice.

At your age, I'd imagine that joining Anthem CC (north part of Phoenix) isn't too expensive, and their courses are pretty nice.

I would agree that it matters, to an extent. I think any major city likely offers ample job opportunities. Houston, Phoenix, LA, SF, Seattle, New York City, etc., are all likely to have something for OP. Lincoln, NE, on the other hand, may be a bit more difficult. But, so long as OP sticks to major cities, he should be fine, unless his degree is in animal husbandry or something else similarly unusual.

Agreed. But, OP asked for some suggestions of actual places to play, and that was the first one that came to mind because of the value proposition. Having said that, I would not want to live near Anthem if I were having to commute to downtown.

Yeah, understood. The area is so big though that he really needs to understand where he wants to live (like Arcadia, Old Town-ish, Tempe or Kierland area at his age) to understand viability. I have completely different recommendations based on those areas. Well, maybe not Tempe. Not sure what I’d recommend there.

What about Dallas? One of the biggest cities in the US, yet very affordable. Good climate that allows for year round golf, barring an exceptional winter storm. The metro area is so big, that you could settle into one spot and join a club or play all over the Dallas/FTW area and hit 100 courses. It's also in the central time zone and should be easy to get back to Michigan on direct flights, which is something you'll want to consider as your parents age.

Wow, as someone that spends a lot of time in Austin, and thinks the city is fine, there’s NFW I would have wanted to go back and make that choice. It is fine. Way better than South Fl (basically hades) but not in the top 100 places I’d ever choose to live. Traffic alone would knock it down 30-50 spots. It is miserable.

Austin traffic is not that bad. Not great for a metro area of 2 million people, but no where near as bad as everyone claims. I've found Houston, Chicago, and Seattle to be far worse. Granted they are all much larger cities, but the time to get 20 miles is better in Austin than those cities on average.

If you can land a job that can afford cost of living hard to beat San Diego for a person in their 20s. Beautiful weather, beaches, nightlife, and tons of young hotties.. Year round golf with amazing resident rates at Torrey pines. Buddy down there plays a lot at Coronado on books of passes he buys that come out to like $20 a round walking.

Austin traffic is terrible period. Per capita it is particularly miserable. Comparing it to other bad traffic places doesn’t make it less bad. If you wanted to make that case you should compare it to DMV or ATL. They’re way worse. :)

Again, great city overall. The traffic is just so miserable it would knock if way down for me.

Good for you for asking the question! Not many do and just end up living where they grew up or went to school.

I am a fan on the pacific north west myself. Lots of a great golf and year round play as the winters are mild. I will take the more temperate climate along with the rain over the scorching hot summers of the places being mentioned so far.

I’ve been interested in the northwest as a possibility. What are the typical “cold” temperatures in winter and how many days get just completely rained out?

I mean if we are comparing cities on livability you have to compare traffic to other cities, no? The relative differences is what matters, which can't be done without a comparison. I picked those cities, because they are all cities I've spent significant time in and they are all worse than Austin from my experience. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this point.

spot on. However when it comes to golf the resident rate at torrey and the other muni courses are great but golfing anywhere else in the county is just way too expensive for someone right out of college unless youre playing a goat track. and as far as ive seen privates are just out of the question around here unless you make real good money

for that profession/weather/golf combo, probably going to be houston that is the easiest, though you'd probably want to join a golf club or at least pay a membership fee at a public course if you're looking to really play a lot of golf ... if you're looking for a lot of high quality public courses, that will change things a bit ... i personally would not move to houston (lived there for 20 years), but an ME degree probably brings a very nice salary that is more efficient than most places ... florida's just hot and crowded ... you might actually look into north carolina ... on the edge a bit in the winter, but only for a few days ... everyone's throwing out huge cities, but the better private golf courses for the buck will be in smaller cities ... plenty of great courses in the South in smaller cities ...

I currently live in Houston and would never recommend it to anyone. The traffic sucks, the weather during the summer is unbearable (I get that Phoenix is hot, but dry heat is infinitely better than humid heat), and property taxes are astronomical.

yeah, i moved back home 5 years ago ... the boom inside the loop had been going on for about 2 years, and it's just gone berserk ... suburbs are very homogenous, but the cool 'hoods inside the loop are stupid with the rent and house prices, along with the traffic inside the loop and that is also occurring outside the loop ... and it was never a "cool" city to move to - just a business place ... and the summer doesn't end till freakin october ...

Check out DFW, Tampa, Jacksonville, Charleston or maybe Nashville (not sure what winter temps are there). I live in Southern Cal (Orange County) and I'm not sure you can get a better spot from a weather standpoint, but the courses aren't thrilling (definitely not cheap) and the cost of living is getting brutal. I'd recommend staying away from PHX unless you love summer heat. Apart from warm winters and some good restaurants, Phoenix is not a good spot to live and the gold is overstated IMO.

I'm putting a plan in place to out to the DFW area in the next 12 months. Cost of living is good, a lot of good golf and while the weather is not SoCal, it's manageable year round. Not sure what the job market is like in Charleston right now, but if I were coming out of college again, that would be a spot of interest for me.

One word of caution... If you've never spent more than a week in DFW, I suggest you do so before you move out there. The DFW are is very different from the rest of Texas from a mindset perspective. People there think they are the most important people in the world and that the world revolves around them. It becomes very trying very quickly.
