Well who'd of guessed...Fittings do help out!

I went to get fitted today, mostly because I felt I was stuck between Reg and Stiff shafts.

Well, it turns out that I was indeed stuck between the 2. My Swing speeds and transitions in my irons put me slightly more towards Stiff, however the relatively same swing speed in my woods was well in the normal region for Reg flex. But I felt I controlled the stiff shafts better.

Turns out that a Reg flex but heavier shaft was the right combination for me to both control the ball flight and also regain some of the distance I had lost due to destroying my body for the last 47 years. Who would have thought that it actually works?!? Hmmmmmmm.

Interesting. I'm exactly in the same boat, swing speed says "stiff", but smooth transition says "regular". Since I'm more aggressive with the driver, I'm swinging stiff off the tee, but irons are "firm" (C Taper Lite 110, stiff).

Took a few fittings and finally an observation from my teacher to get to this though...

I was kind of slow on SS and a little more aggressive on the transition, so the Reg flex in a heavier shaft was the ticket. But it sounds as though you were kind of the exact opposite, which may be the difference.

The statement "between R and S" is ONLY valid for a actual shaft model since there is no common standards for how flex shall be judged, so R can be stronger than X when we compare to different models.

Flex works as a trigger for feel and how much power the player will use on the club.

If flex is to strong, the player will swing out of his shoes to make the shaft feel and work right, and both impact and dispersion suffers. To soft and the player loose his tempo timing, and sometimes also club speed.

Some players benefit from a bit stronger flex than what they play to speed them up, other from a tad softer to slow them down. Shaft weight works almost the same way, lighter gives a potential higher speed, more heavy a bit slower. If your issue was TEMPO and consistency of impact for that reason, both softer and more shaft weight will work, and combined it might be just perfect, even if we should deal with this parameters one by one.

Taken to the extreme, we often hear players who tried their wifes driver and pured it to a distance they never seen before with Ladies flex, and they play X flex them self. Thats a STRONG indicator of that they play a flex stronger than they should in their own driver, it simply so stiff they use more power than swing tech, but when they swing their wifes club, the flex trigger that pushed them to "overplay" is not present anymore, so they use swing tech instead of power, thats why the outcome improves.

Thats why we say, Choose shafts by Weight, Feel and Dispersion...leave ball flight to loft.
