I only have the 790 in 7 iron demo head.

I have 790-760-730 combo set. The 790’s and 760’s blend VERY well.

What should the lofts be adjusted to to blend the 790/760? Where do you switch? Thinking 5-7 in the 790 and 8-pw in 760. Or maybe 8/9.

I went:

4-5 790 - 1.5 Degrees Weak

6-8 760 - Standard

9-PW - 2 Degrees Strong

I’ve been thinking of doing this same combo, but going 8-pw in 730s. You think the same loft adjustment would work?

Well hell, I was okay with the short irons, I was hoping the 5-7 would be a bit shorter.

The videos and reviews out there talk about the short irons having higher toes and the longer irons shorter length. Sounds very minor but improved looking with thinner top line.

I have not seen them though so this is only from what others said.

It's the scoring irons (7-AW) which have had the blade lengths shortened a little, not the long irons. The toe has been raised a little across the set.

I just got the old p790s 5,6,7. And p730s in 8,9,pw and a p760 Aw.

I tested the new p790s and they felt the exact same as the old p790s. So for my skill level (12 handicap) I was able to save about 600 bucks!

Anyone else have the combo set like this? I read a few people have these combos. But is it weird to have the 3 different irons? They all have the same shaft.

Rick Shiels comparison to 17 P790:

Bottom line: He loves them, but found no difference in performance between models. Noted that the 19 P790s steel shafts are .25 longer than the 17 version. Did acknowledge TM's thinner face and more tungsten composition. I note that the offset difference is really small: --1-2 mm and only in the 4-6i. From 7 on offset is the same between the 17 and 19 version. (I don't know if I would be able to discern this, particularly as I go down to the 5i only.)

Shiels view: they kept a good thing good. A 24% price increase is material.

A couple of things from Rick's video. First, the club length spec is not the sneaky little change as he makes it out to be. TaylorMade changed how they measure clubs in late 2018, well after the P790 was initially released. TM now uses the USGA 60 degree ruler as opposed to their old method that almost no one else was using. This change meant that, on paper, the measured length of clubs went up by a small amount ( about 1/8") because of the different way of measuring. They then rounded up to the next quarter of an inch so that their specs weren't on eighths of an inch intervals. So the 6 iron spec changed from 37.25" on the old ruler to 37.5" on the new ruler (different method plus 1/8"). Had Rick measured the 2017 and 2019 clubs side-by-side on the same ruler, he'd have seen that there is only a 1/8" difference between the two. No one is gaining ball speed with 1/8" of extra length.

I don't see a 24% price increase, from a US perspective at least. The 2017 P790 released at $1299 and the 2019 model is $1399. That's a $100 increase, or 7.7%.

Finally, the thinner face is for more ball speed but not out of the center. It's combined with a change to the inverted cone behind the face to preserve ball speed on off-center hits and make heel and toe hits play more similar.

Excellent points. And to me at least, they point toward the 19 version being more similar to the 17 version than different. I don't think that's a bad thing, BTW, and if they come out on top in my own testing, I will purchase the 19s.

The new (2019) P-790 spec chart shown in the Rick Shields Video shows the 6-iron loft to be 24.5* of loft which is clearly **incorrect**.

The P-790 6-iron loft is actually 26.5*, and in fact, **all** the iron lofts are exactly the same as the older (2017) P-790 iron set.

Rick’s channel has turned into gimmicky click bait videos now. I take anything he says with a grain of salt. Well done breaking down his video.
