Came from the G's (and G2 before that) and played the 410's for a couple rounds ... They are great clubs. But I went with the 919 HM and don't regret it one bit. They are incredible clubs - better sounding, better feeling, and classier when in comes to looks. The good news is that you can't go wrong either way. Both the 410 and HM are winners, IMO. In fact, I’d say the HM are the best clubs I’ve ever had.

I only use the SW for full or 3/4 swings, not for chipping or bunker play. So it works for what I want. But for touch shots and bunkers I still use my PM grind 60.

I'm not sure I'd want to use the lob wedge for delicate stuff

The 900/919 Hot Metal and the G400/G410 are my joint-favorites of current or recent clubs...

I think the Hot Metals do an awful good job of having hot faces, high MOI and some help getting the ball in the air while still have (by my duffer standards) a nice, compact shape when it comes to chipping, playing bump and runs or hitting out of the rough.

I think the Ping G-series options are even better at hot face/high MOI/help getting it up but aren't quite as compact and manuverable. So I'm always on the fence about do I want that like 2% of forgiveness or do I want the more compact shape. At the moment it's 900 HM for me but if I saw a killer deal on some G410, who knows?

I agree that the HM's are great. The (black hole like) pull of the G's is irresistible though. I was a pretty major club hoe prior to getting my (now departed) 900 HM's, and that feeling is continuing with the 410's now. I love to just bang down hard on the backside of the ball and watch it shoot out low and spinny at the flag. People that say modern GI clubs don't spin enough just don't know how to strike the ball properly with a descending strike!

Well said .The G410's spin is as good as any iron. I wasn't one who let the surface marks of the hydropearl finish bother me but for those that were the new 2.0 finish is excellent. Not sure what Ping did but it worked.

Very well said...I have played such great golf with these this summer. It will be hard for me to justify putting another iron in the bag. I play the 4 thru S and every club is money. Drop and stop mid irons. Spin is great with the 9 thru S. Even the finish has help up significantly better than the G400s.

Lob wedge I could never imagine in a G series iron, but I have done the SW on a couple of G sets. So confidence-inspiring and forgiving on full shots, but it definitely does give up something on touch and finesse shots. And on longer bunker shots where I might pull my SW instead of LW (greenside bunkers), I hit some clunkers with the G series SW.

Bottom line for me, on anything other than full shots, I seem to prefer a more traditional wedge, and that is the direction I generally end up going. YMMV. I can see why some would prefer the comfort and forgiveness of a G series SW and LW.

If you use it for full swings only it's fine. I'm more accurate with it than I was with my blade sand wedge. Wouldn't recommend short chips with these beasts though

I'm really nuking these things though. I mean they are strong lofted so it's not entirely surprising, however I'm hitting them further than I thought I would

I hit a 5 iron today over a green which must have carried about 210, and hit a 4 iron off a tee about 230

I was maybe maxing out my apex pro 4 iron at 210

It was the first time I'd played these irons on firm ground and a 30+ celcius day. When struck pure they explode. It's a different feel than puring a forged iron, but hitting a pure 6 is like watching a jet take off in Top Gun. I just want to take my shirt off and play beach volleyball afterwards

I know what you mean Jeff. Heck, I'm an old fart and even with my swing the ball just explodes off the face. And yet I haven't had one shot that has been what I would call a flyer and got me in trouble.

Not really. I hit a ball way it on the toe one night in league and it landed in the middle of the green. If I flush one it's at the back. I'm guessing 5 yards difference.

As I view this thread as the current de facto G series iron thread, let me just say that I am loving the G400 irons. I was bouncing around irons a bit this season, but really enjoyed the Mizuno 919 HM irons. 919 HM’s are terrific irons, and my co-favorite GI irons with the G400’s. But I guess their performance left me open to try the other irons, so they were not a slam dunk. Also played Ping ie1 irons, which are really great irons, but obviously a little more challenging than the G series.

Anyway, got a good deal on a lightly used set of G400’s, sent them into Ping to change to blue dot, and have been playing excellent golf with them. Having owned every G series iron of recent memory, the G400’s are the best for me no question. The AWT 2.0 shaft works great for me, seeing as I love Nippon shafts.

To the recent question about flyers, I have not seen that with the G400’s. They have been very consistent in distances. When I absolutely flushed the 919 HMs, they could have a tendency to fly long.

Bottom line, I would imagine the leap to the G410 would be another solid leap, so I’ll keep my eye out for a set of those. But big thumbs up to the G400. 919 HMs have slightly better feel, but the G400s are performing better for me. YMMV.

You're not going to get flyers or hotspots or any of that other nonsense. You may hit some balls further than others due to different contact however, as is the case with every iron.

I think most OEMs have figured this one out. Not going to completely thread hijack but I am a lower handicap "testing" a set of 919 HMs and notice zero "hot shot" flyers or drop in distance with slight miss hits regardless of high/low/toe/heel of the club. Have heard other lower handicap players in my area ordering G410s with stronger shafts that match their game and they are having similar results.

I am going to have to bite the bullet. I love my G irons but I cannot resist any longer. My G irons are going to be hard to knock out of the bag. Forgiveness and distance have been outstanding. The only thing which I found was the height. Man, I've hit the ball super high on occasions but in each case they have covered the distance needed. No moon balls that go nowhere. Just higher and I attribute that to going down in shaft weight to the AWT's. Anyway, Ness, Jeff and you guys have twisted my arm. I'm going to get a fitting at one of the local Ping Fitting Centers in September and going to grab me a set of 410 irons 5-AW plus a 410 4 hybrid with the Tour 85 or 90 shaft. While I've never hit the iBlades before I will say that the G410's are the most forgiving irons I've ever hit (gamers, friends clubs, demo's, etc). Now I definitely don't hit every club out there, so it's definitely taken with a grain of salt.

Compared to my old Taylormade RSi1's it's not even close.

I had 1 off the toe, 2 off the heel and thinned a couple. All went in the "direction" they were suppose to, which is impressive enough to me. But what really got me is how close in distance they all were. Even with those misses, they either still hit the green or were just off of it.
