Embarrising club championships moment(s)

Had won it 3 times in a row and get lucky to play a guy in finals I should definitely beat. 3 up with 3 to play. Make double on 16. Lose to birdie on 17. Pull hook iron OB on 18 into parking lot. 19th hole good drive to 105. Opponent gonna make bogey. Shank into long grass. Take a penalty to re-hit. Shank #2. Drop and hope for a miracle. Awful chunk that goes about 40 yards. Shake hands with opponent. Head to bar to drink heavily.

Not our club championship, but qualifying day for one of our bigger tournaments. First hole is a relatively easy par 4, EXTREMELY wide, especially to the left, which abuts the parking lot and exit road. The entrance/exit are separated by an island, the exit side is maybe 10 feet wide. Exit lane is about 250-260 yards from the first tee box.

Typical tournament backup on the first tee, running a couple groups behind, also plenty of guys just arriving for later tee times. Probably about 20 people in all, including the head pro and one of the assistant pros. I'm the last one to hit in the group. Step up to the tee, and rip a vicious, high duck hook about as hard left as I'm capable of.

Everyone watching notices the pickup truck driving toward the exit. Guys drifting onto the tee, most yelling some form of "Come on!" or "Go! Go!". Sure enough, ball lands right in the back of the pickup just as it's going through the narrow spot on the exit road right by the island. Wild cheers from everyone on the tee. Brake lights flash briefly on the pickup, and it just keeps driving. Made a 7, played mediocre at best for the rest of the round, and failed to qualify for the tournament.

Qualifying for the same tournament this year, the head pro was kind enough to re-tell the story while I was waiting to tee off. No repeat, I found the rough just off the fairway.

I shot 109 in our club championship on the first day. Shot a smooth 90 the second day. My handicap had gotten restricted 3 weeks prior when I shot 78 at a different course. That is a rough tournament spread.

Cobra King RAD 3 Wood Fujikura Motore X F3 Stiff (14.5 degree setting)
Mizuno CLK Hybrid (19 and 22 degree, I swap them out depending on the wind in the parking lot)

First tournament ever. Shotgun start and I start a very nervous par/par and come up to an easy and short 475 yd par 5 with a small pond protecting the green.

I am about 210 out from the fairway lying one. Normally I would go for it, but it’s a tournament so I lay up to 75 yards. Middle of the fairway.

I proceed to rinse 4 balls.

If I remember correctly, I carded a 13. My worst score on a hole, though admittedly, not by much.

I'm on round 2 of my first club championship... it has not gone well... Friday is qualifier for match play event... I'm a 5 handicap and don't have much chance of the match play, but whatever, let's get out there and have some fun.

Club pro tells me 87 qualified last year... I laugh. My average on the course is 82, my high is 88 and I've been playing lights out everywhere but on the green.

Shoot 90... with 2 triples. One from the rough about 100 yards from the hole after my tee shot. Just ugly golf, bad luck and horrific, rage inducing putting... OK we are going to turn things around on Saturday in the losers stroke play. I have a 9 on a par 5... Shot 50 on the front. Dropped a 38 on the back with an easily avoided double (tried to lay off my driver, went lazy and pushed it right).

Tomorrow is the last round... We have a side bet of skins and low gross on 18... I'm hoping to compete for both tomorrow. I can eagle every par 5 and get strokes on them... Now to go shower from crapping myself on the course (metaphorically)

> I understand how handicap are calculated, but find it interesting that a 5 cap averages 82. Seems a little high.

My home course is also TOUGH.

Posted a 96 today, but I was swinging for the fences and chasing skins on the back 9 in hopes of getting something done. Going to take a few days off of golf, and hope my timing comes back.
