Shanks out of no where

Recommended Posts

Hello all, just looking for some tips.

Recently (after a lesson) I have been working on standing closer to the ball, keeping club pointed at my belt buckle and hinging my wrists earlier. This cured my driver hooks but now I am hitting shanks to the right non stop for probably the first time in two years with my irons. And my irons were the best part of my game when my driver was hooking. I feel like I am losing my mind. When I hit a shank its a low ball flight (topped/thin) and then just sails to the right. I feel like it can be a weight transfer issue too because sometimes when I focus on getting weight to the back foot I hit a nice shot pure shot but when i start thinking about my wrists I think thats where it all falls apart. Anything is appreciated.

I feel your pain, been there. I should just copy/paste my previous replies to these cries for help as I always give the same solution that worked for me.

Use Monte's 2 ball drill as part of PSR like Zach Johnson and use that feeling when you hit.

I just came out of a shanks disaster period myself. What finally worked for me was 1) focusing on turning my shoulders on my backswing & 2) keeping the clubface square to the target line during takeaway.

I had gotten into the tendency to have too much of a arms-only backswing (with too little shoulder turn), while fanning the clubface open to feel like I'm completing my backswing. The result was my clubface staying too open during my downswing, with the hosel of my irons hitting the ball first & shanking.

If you are shanking on half-swing/pitch shots as well, focusing on the square clubface takeaway was more important for me. I hope this helps!

That's funny because squaring the clubface early seemed to be what caused my hosel interaction. No idea why. I had the habit of having the club face way open at the top and had to have really fast closure rate late to get it square at impact. Feels powerful but it was also causing the flipping and early extension.

When I decided to try the "motorcycle move" in the transition to fix it here come the s***ks. I would have to revert to fanning it open and fast closure rate mid round just to finish with a few balls in my bag.

Using the 2 ball drill in my PSR now I can really close it up early and hit with confidence. Flipping and early extension are improving.

Yeah im gonna start with the 2 ball drill and go from there. Thinking about my wrists/hands/clubface got me into this mess haha

You should know better, that's a dirty word. It can happen to anyone anytime too. A few months back I was playing to a 3 when out of nowhere, "a dirty word" happened to me. It took me a minute to compose myself and focus but once that was accomplished they be gone...forever. That dirty word is all about your hand position at impact.

Thats what ive been feeling its coming from. Recently I weakened my right hand (moved toward target, think thats right lol) so I think I might have over done that but i did that a few months ago. But every little thing is running through my mind at this point. Earlier in the year i knew every time i walked up to an iron shot that i would expect to hit it better than most, these past two weeks have been an absolute nightmare

I'm battling this as well.

I can shoot a 75 and then the next day I'll be crusing along for a few holes, then SHANK.

Usually this comes from my short irons. Once it happens, it's all I can think about. I go from aiming at the flagstick to "just don't shank it". Awful feeling!!

For me, it tends to happen when I dont fully turn my shoulders. I feel like I cant take a half swing anymore without shanking it.

Help!!!

Glad to hear it! It's quite liberating, for me, to be able to swing away with all the other thoughts rattling around in my head not being overshadowed with the dreaded s***k.

The issue mght have come after your recent golf lesson as you are not used to standing closer to the golf ball.

Your arms will not be caught with your torso ( unless you have a huge beer belly , in that case, watch the golf swing by LPGA professionals , they also have an obstacle to clear ).

It is always difficult to try to change the golf swing to a more efficient and correct way. Keep at it, you will get out of this in no time.
