Looking for insight for a driver.

Good day fellow degenerates!

 

Looking for a driver from the last 2-3 cycles, that can keep up with ball speed. Have a budget to work with, around $200. Swing speed is between 102-105. Would prefer a smaller head shape as I struggle with the looks of larger heads. I know everyone is different in their opinions, but would love to hear any and all thoughts. Thanks in advance!

A couple good starting points would be Titleist 915 or 917 D3, Taylormade M1 440, or Ping G400. All can be had for around $200 or less.

Thank you for the info. Previously had a 915 and liked it. I'm interested in the M1 440 for sure.

It this point, I think you can get the smaller head M3 for 200ish.

G400 will look small while retaining a ton of forgiveness.. the 917 D3 is also a good option. I thought the M1 440 was pretty unforgiving...

Thoughts on forgiveness with G400 LST? Not crazy about the design of the crown, but pretty sure I could get over it with good performance. Have not hit the 917, but always love the look of Titleist woods.

I agree with the above, you could even go back to the 910. I've also seen some the Callawy EPIC drivers in that price point. Love my Sub Zero.

If I'm not mistaken, the Epics were all 460cc heads.

it pretty much won all the awards from the sites that do that sort of thing. I believe the LST is 440, I have it and love it.

I found the 917D2 to be an almost perfect blend of spin and forgiveness, im 105-110 range. Looks great too and go really cheap now for what is a 1 model old driver.

G400 is best driver I’ve ever played. Nothing has been able to get it out of bag

I'd get the 2017 M1 with a low spinning shaft. This combo easily less than $200

Find a Cally 816 DBD - that thing is still a beast and you'll save $.

G400 or 917D3. I saw more forgiveness and distance with G400. I liked the adjustability of the 917 and the workability.

I had the 917d2...definitely get a TM to try..old Ping Rapture worth a look...the jdm Yonex was 2012....i got one locally with a gdi shaft but 9.5 was too low for me sadly !

Just got the f8+ back from getting built. Had some hot melt added to it front/neutral but have not had a chance to hit it yet. I struggle with high spin, so need help reducing it. Interesting @RogerinNewZealand mentioned the 816 DBD. Always loved the look with the matte finish. Seems to have a heavier head weight as well, which I like. Have a 2016 m2 I can grab as well, but have not had the chance yet due to other financial obligations. It is definitely next on my list.

I’ve tried a bunch of drivers recently and if I needed to build one for $200 or less, I would grab a 2016 Taylormade M2 (which is still being compared to the new offerings and hard to beat — see reviews on YouTube) and I would try to find a Hzrdus Smoke with a TM adapter. The Hzrdus smoke is an excellent low-mid spin/ trajectory shaft being offered with no upcharge on many 2019 models, including Taylormade’s (so you might be able to buy it with an adapter already installed).

Crossfield and others did a distance test of recent drivers and basically they all go about the same, so it is the shaft that is the dealio...

JP is in the 661 speeder camp, whichever Evo suits you...he settled on a TM SLDR tp because it’s 420cc and rather heavy headed. He likes to feel the club head when he swings. They are dirt cheap too.
