Son regrips to a strong grip just before taking a shot

Recommended Posts

My son has had this issue with changing his grip just before the take away. He regrips to a stronger grip then starts his backswing. It is like a sub conscious move, he does not know he does it until you show him a video of it. This is wrecking his golf game. Due to this , his club face is really strong at the top , almost DJ in the look. Then he does not change the strong loft in the downswing , presenting low lofts for the club used at impact. Either times it good and hits very strong low flighted shots or hooks the arse out of it, or hits worm burners.

This is stopping him from being single figure hcp instead of the 18 hcp he is know.

When he does not regrip , he hits it great.

The fact he don't know he does it worries me.

He has lessons and does not do this that often during lessons. It only seems to happen out on the range or on the course

Any help appreciated

Take a correct grip and then hover the club just off the ground behind the ball -- won't give him the chance to regrip before takeaway

I have had this problem for years and it’s almost like an involuntary twitch... very hard to subconsciously override every time.

I watched a video (maybe Alastair Davies) where the final check on grip was to see if you could rotate the clubface both open and closed at address. I found that - due to my grip - I could close it shut but could barely open it at all.

Now I use that as the final part of my routine with the club slightly hovered. It simply makes me more aware of my lead hand grip’s effect on clubface and is a final check to catch if I’ve regripped or not. Over time it’s giving me a less extreme grip.

May be different for different people. My miss is a hook, and even though I’ve changed my path to be more neutral over time the extra-strong grip causes me to send it left. The grip is a hangover from older times that creeps back in. For others it could be a necessary match-up as you say.

I just wanted to make sure we weren’t working with a 6 year old.

Hovering the club will probably be the answer but will probably be very frustrating.

Good luck!!

Yeah , his instructor has seen it and is working on getting this sorted, but it just keeps creeping back in his game

We have not tried to hover the club prior to take away.

He says that he sometimes does not feel comfortable with his grip. But this has been checked by his instructor and he has a good grip

I do this with my driver.

I have a fear I’m going to block it occasionally and this seems to nullify that. However I then occasionally snap hook it.

I don’t see it as an issue as i only do it with my driver and I swing it differently with the big stick anyways.

Maybe he has a fear of going right?

If it is a swing trigger maybe get him to do a small forward press and then straight into the backswing.
