Can someone please explain this to me?

So heres the deal. I have an Adams 4h with an aldila proto by you 80x shaft and it’s my favorite club. I recently bought a brand new uncut 80x shaft of the exact same model to put in my mizuno clk . Per aldilas website they say tip 4h 1/2” and leave 2 and 3 hybrids untipped. I tipped the new shaft 1/2” because i add hotmelt to my hybrids to get the weight up to D4ish.

Look at the pics. With graphics lined up the new shaft is WAY LONGER from graphics to tip. Yet the new shaft feels extremely stout and firm and the 4 hybrid kicks like a mule. By looking at the shafts it appears the 4h would be tipped 2-3”! But that’s impossible bc it was built by Adams. Stock setup.

Anyone have any ideas???

Hard to say what's going on but I'd look for someone with a frequency meter to sort out how to tip the shaft to match the club you love.

I have no clue, but the tip section is only 3 inch long on that shaft before the taper starts, so use a caliper and find where it goes over .370 and reverse the numbers, then you get to know how much tip trimming thats done, and we always need some for insert and the ferrule (most likely 1.25), so it cant be tip trimmed more than about 1.75" as the max, depending on insert.

I agree Howard. I don’t believe the 4h is tipped more than normal but i can’t explain the difference in tip to graphics unless the OEM completely changed the shaft graphics. That’s seems unlikely since it’s an older model and not super popular

Almost the same. Within 1/2”. Very strange

Sounds like the graphics were put on the shafts in different places then. You usually have to trim 2 to 4 inches or so off the butt to get a club to proper playing length after tip trimming. I agree it's kinda weird, but I wouldn't sweat it. This is assuming you haven't cut the new shaft to length yet, of course.

The original shaft could be made in one place ( probably Southern China ) and the new shaft probably made in another country ( most likely Vietnam ), the graphics could be placed in different section of the shaft.

Check the original shipping sticker on the butt section if it's still there. Sometimes a different catch of manufacturing could have this happen.

Adams was notorious for using watered down versions of shafts in their woods even if they were "real". They would often use softer bend profiles or increased torque values to get it to play like a more user friendly shaft that the masses could hit. The Adams Pro Gold was also one of their most successful and popular hybrid heads and is still used on tour to this day on both the PGA and Champions tour, so I'm not really sure why you think it was not super popular? The "real" VS Proto is a beast, sub-2* of torque in a reasonably heavy, tip stout profile...no wonder it feels like rebar!
