What's your handicap and driver swing speed / distance?

What you're kind of ignoring is that you can't really just take your game and go "I'm going to try to increase swing speed." As if you're just going to get stronger or swing harder with your current move.

 

Increasing swing speed comes from better mechanics and better mechanics mean center face more often and better path and better contact on irons. Speed and contact go together when your swing gets better.

 

Scoring is correlated with swing speed but better contact is also correlated with speed. And "time playing" and therefore knowledge of how to play the game is correlated with swing speed (to an extent, obviously) .

 

If you were a guy that didn't want to do lessons and just get better, I wouldn't recommend going to the range and working on increasing swing speed. I'd recommend going to the range and working on better contact. Like using impact tape, and markers on the ground to ensure you're hitting the center of the face and getting your low point target-side of the ball. You can make vast improvements in those areas just by making it your focus, and you mind find that you're making a better move and getting a little more speed.

I’m maybe a 12 now and total driving is maybe 270-280.

 

Yet, I was about a 16 last year with the same driver length but a little more off-the-tee accuracy. The difference was quality of approach shots.

 

I think it’s a pretty simple equation: can you leave yourself with a reasonable par 4 approach after your tee shot based on the tees you choose to play off of? If so, then scratch is feasible - there are no restrictions based on driver.

On another note, handicaps aren't the be all, end all at judging skill. I looked up a guy the other day who was a +1.7 and every round on there was a tournament round. That same guy probably could have a handicap much better if he was only picking rounds by himself at his home course or with his friends.

Have been playing/practicing seriously for a few years and I will say hitting the 250+ carry threshold was a gamechanger for me. Mid-irons to short irons into almost all par 4s cut 3 or 4 strokes easily (play tees around 6500 yds)

Chart is pretty accurate for me... around 250 carry, rollout dependent on conditions.

I'm sure there is relationship to driving distance and handicap, but it is not definitive is all situations. I play with a few 90 mph swingers that have long iron games that keep them in the low single digits.

You don’t keep score but you know your SS and carry distance, and they just happen to be above average for a Tour Pro.

 

Never change WRX.

Not everyone plays this game to score as low as they can. Hitting greens is satisfying enough for me.
