Easier to track bright colored balls?

JD3

Recommended Posts

Is there any science to back up the assertion that bright colored balls (like the shade Titleist uses on yellow AVX, for example) are easier to track in the air downrange? And/or easier to find in rough grass?

Like this claim from Srixon that yellow balls are 3x easier to spot at a distance of 250 yards.

I don't care for the colored balls, but some of them are easier to track and find. A regular playing partner is older and has terrible eyesight. He seems to be able to track all the bright orange and reds balls much better. The green ones are not really a great idea, as most grass is green.

There is a red by Volvic/Vivid that I can see in a fairway from very, very far away. It's nutty really how that Vivid ball pops out like a traffic light.

He finds only the yellow and orange to be helpful to find, the blue and purple and red don’t help at all for JP.

Just try them out for yourself. I'm sure "science" is busy with more pressing matters, this really doesn't need proving does it?

I will never go back to white.

- because I can clearly spot my yellows a mile away while with white I can only spot them a mile away

- I just like the look, period

- I enjoy pi**ing off small-minded people who look down on any colour other than their own

I have a playing partner that uses all colors other than white. He absolutely sprays his driver off the tee with a whole lot of distance. I agree with the yellow's visibility but personally I lose the red and orange ones in the air easily. So even if they are easier to see in the rough it's harder for me to gauge the exact area to look.

  • 3 weeks later...

Srixon's bright yellow Z-Star SL had a metallic fleck in it and was the easiest for me to track in the air and also spot on the ground. I watched a lot of junior golf as a spectator over the years, and this ball definitely stood out in terms of visibility. Better than white and much better than pink or orange.

An eye injury years ago left me with only one functional eye and I'm already near sighted, so finding balls post landing can be a chore for me, don't seem to have a problem tracking through the air. Although yellow is certainly the most widely available it does seem to be more visible to me (except for when the grass gets really dried out and brown), red seems to be the best visibility speaking, but the only reds I can think of are 2-3 piece surlyn balls.

I can follow other players golf ball off the tee very well but I do lose sight of them after the first

bounce. If I am too far to the side of the tee box I sometimes don't pick the ball up until it hits on the fairway. If out on the fairway and far to the side of others shots I can follow almost every shot if I am watching when the ball was struck.

I find the yellow balls slightly easier to track in the air than white, under certain sky conditions. But under any circumstances the yellow is easier to follow as it reaches the ground and rolls. Or sitting on the ground when I walking up and looking for it. Very much easier.

The matte red is pretty easily to follow in flight, not so easy to see on the ground. Pink, green, blue, orange, etc. I've not used enough to say one way or the other. But I suspect the orange stands out similarly to yellow.

I switched to yellow Srixon Z Stars last year after only playing white Pro V1’s forever. I found one while playing, and finished my round with it out of curiosity. It was instantly easier for me to see, both in the air and on the ground. Once I got over playing a “non-traditional” ball, I’ll never go back to white. It’s really great when you approach your ball after everyone has hit, and you know instantly which one is yours. But that might change as more people start playing them.

I was gonna say, I dont play them, but think the Z-Star has the best color yellow out of all the colored balls

The QST has a sparkly yellow. I prefer the traditional yellow found in a soft feel.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Vice Neon Lime. EXTREMELY high visibility, excellent ball. I used them before getting prescription glasses to correct my nearsightedness, when I'd lose the ball 150 yards out. The color made it easier to track and find them. I've switched to Snells, and don't really care for their yellow ball, but with the prescription correction, I don't have a problem tracking a white ball any more.

I've experimented with pretty much every color. I don't typically find one color easier to track in the air than another but on the ground and in the rough there is a big difference to me. The green ones surprised me with how visible they were in the grass. The matte finish Volvik orange were pretty good too. My league partner plays the yellow Srixon and sometimes I struggle to see those in the rough, but I think a lot of that depends on light conditions.

Yup, not that great a deal if you don't want to make the 5-dozen investment. I play a lot of golf, so I never had a problem doing so, but I can definitely understand the point.

I just bought those green ones. I also have the orange, pink and matte white. Good to hear you can spot them tho, I was a little nervous they'd blend in with the grass.

I love those Softfli's, Dicks has buy 2 get 1 free so i picked up another 3 dozen in the different colors. Playing four rounds this wkend so hope they are good to me.
