This May Be The Craziest Thing I have Ever Attempted

Kinda what I had in mind--- And I rediscovered a keyhole Mac 4 wood Randy gave me. I measured it out and hit it close to 200 yds with roll out. And when I do that round it will be strictly old school eyeball it up no range finder. I do not use it much at my home course since I have been playing it 20 years or so.

I played 7650 yards at a little altitude with blades and Pittsburgh Persimmon and broke 100. And the course was soaked. And you're a better stick than me. This was a LONG time ago but I remember playing a par 5 and hitting driver, 3w, 3w into the wind to the front fringe and I crushed all 3 shots. Played with my cuz and two other guys joined us. Cuz and I were teeing up at a more modest distance on the first tee but the 2 guys that joined us convinced us to play from the tips. Turns out they were assistant pros to Mark Calcavecchia and Kenny Perry. It was a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy your adventure.

OK as I described on some other threads I have been out of cyberspace with computer problems. Been playing the vintage stuff some in fact quite a bit. I have found out even though I can hit them anything with a Pro Pel shaft is out. Played my 57 Diamondbacks Saturday and ran out of gas after 16 holes but still scraped it in for a 80 on my home course. I did play the 57 Mac woods too that go with that set. As far as irons I have it narrowed down to 2 sets on irons. Either my 80 Vips with Apex shafts or Machogans or a set of Maxfli Aussie blades with R-300s. I really am leaning towards the VIPs because to me the Aussie blades are somewhat modern being made in 2000. Driver is a no brainer a blonde Power Bilt I found on the scrap pile months ago. 4 wood is a old keyhole shaft unknown that Randy (OSR) gave me man that thing is a rocket. I did take a suggestion from D Copp and threw in a 57 Mac 2 wood. But I can still hit a blade 2 iron and I have that with both sets. SW is also a no brainer a Mac LRA 56* that DJ gave me some time ago. Sorta modern but old school design. Now I am going to draw some fire for my putter. I have so many Ping Ansers I went with one both in the vintage and front line bags. I have 2 I bent exactly alike with identical stock Ping Man grips. I am going to attempt this the week after labor day when I am on vacation and there is a lull before the tourist golf fall season. Open for comments

Well the more I thought about it after I posted it has to be the Machogans. I knew all along for me it would have to be something Macgregor. If I play those LOL I do not have to practice as much because I can hit those in my sleep! Yep it will be an all Mac bag except for the driver and putter. Darn close to what I played in the 80s. I think in the 80s I had a H&B 4 wood in the bag which I still have but the shaft is too stiff for me now. The LRA wedge is close enough to a 588 or Wilson Staff Dynapower. The driver is darn near identical to my beloved blonde Power Bilt except for the shaft. My old one was a X-100 and this one is a "C" but it plays about like a soft "R". That old Mac Keyhole 4 wood I have no idea what shaft is in it but it ain't stiff so I can hit it.

I am trying to keep it close to what I played in the 70s 80s myself. Back in those days I only carried a PW and SW but in the 80s 90s I did carry a Karsten 1 iron which I still have. Funny thing you mentioned an Eye 2 SW--- In my modern stuff ( somewhat modern for me) with the KZG teardrops I am carrying a legal (GASP!) Mizuno T-10 SW and a ( GASP AGAIN!) Ping Zing LW I found in the pile at work. Love the way that thing sits right off the bat and the way it performs. Never carried a 60* until the mid 90s and it was a Cleveland 588. I have about 10 Anser putters found mostly at work. The one in the classic bag was bent in the neck. I put it on my jig and eyeball bent it to my liking. I liked it so much I bent another one I found the same way and for now it is in the front line bag. Both have stock Ping Man grips and frankly they are hard to tell apart

Actually that is what the 2 wood is for. Fellow WRXer D Copp suggested it a while back. At first I thought what for? because I can still hit the deuce(2 iron) or a 1 iron. If I left the 1 iron out then I have an extra slot. So WTH? I have a Mac I think is a 56 or 57 with the cloverleaf sole plate and also have a Mac Velocitized year unknown. I have never attempted hitting either one. I know some guys hit the 2 wood because they have trouble getting a persimmon driver off the ground. I actually hit the persimmon driver quite high with a draw. I can tee it down some and hit a screamer draw. But If I can do what I think I can do on a couple of the par 3s there the 2 wood may help. I can do without the 1 iron because I have the VIP Deuce bent back to 17*----- But the more I thought about it he may have made a good suggestion. I may say to heck with the 14 club rule and pack 16 clubs or more. I have plenty of staff bags that can handle it. I am still in the experimental mode.

Guess what old buddy you may win there--- I have been experimenting with quite a few of the Ironmaster and 8802 styles I have. Have kinda gotten comfortable with them. Right now I have sworn off of Ping putters. Was also putting this Am with a old Penna blade putter with original leather grip that Richard gave me. That thing feels and putts good

> IMHO the MacHogans would be just shy of cheating because I play them so much anyhow. I did try to practice the FC-4000s that Stickfish sent me yesterday. I do not think my back will hold up for 18 holes at that venue. So at this point it will maybe be the MacHogans or the Precisions. Persimmon woods I have picked out--- From my stash I pulled a Penna Model 12 which has a sorta deep face but not as deep as a JS or LFF---- but it does have a regular shaft. My 4 wood is a Keyhole Mac Randy gave me and believe it or not has a regular shaft--- The topping on this is a original Louise Suggs "First Lady" 6 wood---- Putter will be more than likely a PGA Tommy Armour Ironmaster or the putter that is front line for me lately a Spalding TP Mills #3----- Some of my buds on the other site I go on think I can break 90. One of those guys has actually played golf with me. If I play the Mac Hogans I will probably ditch the 6 wood. This will not be a just go and do thing I am going to seriously practice for this. More than likely I may start out with a balata ball more than likely a HT-100. But I may go to the Lady Bridgestone or a Wilson 50. I am also going to play the ball down which I mostly do anyhow. With my distance of about 220 on the persimmon driver and a 600 yard par 5 and 2 Par 3s over 250 I am going to have to rely on my short game quite a bit

Go for it Stu, as you say, golf is supposed to be fun (apart from the agony, screaming, chest beating, flagellation). For your wooden woods slip a pair of W/S duo's into the bag, they are the closest you will get to a Balata ball. cheers

Cobra King Hyper Steel #7 wood

BB Heavenwood # 9 wood
