Putting style and stroke focus

So I was wondering if you need to have focus in both arms with a more traditional putting stroke (palms opposing). In contrast, I presume you can be a great putter with a claw grip or other similar style where one hand is particularly dominant in powering the stroke (and probably a larger contributor to control of the clubhead).

 

My stroke is palms opposing and I have spent quite a few years trying to simplify the short game to right arm cue's. There are plenty of flaws in this but I've certainly become better in the process.

 

I was wondering if you take a more traditional stroke you need your "practice focus" to be in both palms or the whole body rather than a dominant hand. I suspect this to be true due to the need for more equal contributions of the L/R sides of the body and the hemispheric brain. In more elite putting this probably also has some credit considering a "flow state" is linked to utilising both hemi-spheres and it would seem likely that practising a single sided focus wouldn't be useful unless it was the weakest link in technique.

 

Maybe there are supporting or opposing views, or an explanation of why Tiger does RH-only drills?

My only focus is swinging the putter back and up on the line of the putt. Two much thinking over the putts just leads you to being a basket case.

I try and have a blank mind when putting. For me putting has never been a technical aspect of the game. I just pick the tool up and swing it to achieve what I want. I do remind myself 'not to look up until you hear the ball drop' but mechanically I give it no more thought than I give picking up a hammer (ie; hold it by the right end and point it in the right direction).

 

I'm not an awesome putter but three putts are rare and I usually get two or three one putts every round. If one actually goes astray (ie; never stood a chance) it's down to a bad read.

 

But technique..meh. I just practised a lot at home with a putting matt.

 

If/when the rest of my game comes good I might eventually start to consider putting technique but right now it's fine as it is..and I've never bashed my thumb with a putter :)

Over the years we have found the following these **basic** examples of movement patterns in putting strokes.

Lead arm/hand dominant -Dave Stockton

Trail Arm/Hand Dominant - Tiger Woods

Active Shoulders Passive Arms - Lots of these.

Passive Shoulders -Active Arms - Steve Stricker - Stan Utley

Obviously the entire body is involved in the putting stroke, but I think focus on specific parts during the stroke is common.

I also know that many great strokes have different dominant aspects for backswing than follow through. For example rotate shoulders or core back - right hand finish is very common and successful.
