I get the feeling S.H. Park is going to be a legit #1

Recommended Posts

Alright, I take back my thread, LOL.

SHP obviously has some issues being in the final group. She's either running away with it or she's totally lost it. The Evian was ugly. For some reason I kind of thought she might've been past that but now she's failed to come through twice in recent weeks.

Totally agree with @leeux as well. She needs to pick up the pace, big-time. She's routinely being put on the clock and it seems to be mainly out of her own unpreparedness and tendency to slow things down when it's her turn.

Not necessarily disagreeing with all the critiques per se, but it is funny how critiqued this player is, despite being the most frequent tournament winner of the last three years. Indecision, terrible under pressure, stands too close to the ball with the putter, etc. All I am trying to point out here, is that any critique of Sung Hyun's abilities, is also effectively an even harsher damnation of every other player on tour (except Jin Young obviously). Listen, as a fan I can concede that she has often disappointed. But then again she has also "stepped up" so to speak, more so than anyone else (besides Jin Young obviously, and maybe Brooke).

Reminds me a little of how during his later prime years (ca 2007), every golfer and his brother was blabbering on about Tiger Woods's dipping his head during the swing.

I attribute the poor play to the weather more than being in the final group. She just doesn't seem to play well in windy and/or wet conditions. Karen mentioned the need for players to be comfortable playing in rain gear. Sung Hyun was missing a lot of drives to the left. Rain gear messing with her swing?

She draws the criticism because she is so good! I think almost everything people say is true - brilliant, erratic, immensely talented, awful in bad weather, can't handle pressure etc... Your mention of tiger is salient, because TW, for all his brilliance, is the author of some of the worst shots on the PGA. I think his lowlights reel would be staggering viewing! SHP is a little similar. What Tiger was always able to do was to brush it all off and flick the switch back to brilliant. I really hope SHP can do the same. There is some evidence that that is also how she operates.

Disagree! Viewers are spared from seeing the worst shots at the bottom of the leaderboard. Tiger is the most covered golfer in the world, everything he does is on display. One doesn't scrape their ball around en route to 81 wins, and Tiger Woods is a truly gifted ballstriker, one of the all-time greats.

However you make a good point, even if unintentionally. Sung Hyun suffers from familiarity breeding contempt. Even though she doesn't lead in Top Tens, she seems to put herself in serious contention as often as if not more than anyone. A lot of wins, and a lot of collapses. Doesn't seem to bother her too much by the way. She was clowning around on social media the day after Evian.

I see a lot of similarities between Sung Hyun and Sei Young. SYK has 9 wins and 43 top 10s in 4.5 seasons, although no majors. She can go crazy low, but also suffers from an occasional implosion. SHP has 7 wins and 29 top 10s in 2.5 seasons. Scary when she's on, but can check out mentally at times.

I don't think what you wrote here makes any sense at all. You're saying that she's criticized for X, Y and Z yet those criticisms are a "harsher damnation of every other player on tour." So when she's criticized for slow play you honestly think every other player is slower?

That would make her the fastest player, LOL. So your rebuttal to criticisms are to literally say the opposite? Doesn't that just make you wrong in this case?

The criticisms are certainly correct. We can't debate that. She _does_ play slow. We see it quite often in her play. And the discussion about her playing poorly under pressure and in lousy conditions also appears to be well-grounded. And the critique of her putting is also fair. I'm definitely sick of hearing about the putting thing, but standing super close to the ball is definitely not a thing one should advocate.

I don't get your post because while people are picking up trends you seem to be calling them haters. Seems you're electing to be naive, no?

Another lackluster final round. At a major no less. Sure seems she needs to light a fire in her belly. She obviously has the talent to win, no less dominate. However, the mental aspect of the game seems to be her Achilles heel at the present.

I think Lexi's wrists will retire before she does. With that swing anyway.

The talk about the weather is interesting, didn't SHP grow up learning golf on a driving range, that might contribute to her "inexperience" of playing in bad weather as she's not learnt from a young age how to do it.

It's just a thought and probably a stretch but I thought it worth mentioning.

Totally agree. Seven wins, including two majors, in 2.5 seasons is not a MM. Sure, she seems to lack focus at times, and gets tripped up by spotty weather, but she has the skills to reach #1 at any time. The reason she isn't #1 for long stretches is simply the fact that her competition is also d*mn good. I really don't think we'll see a dominant #1 for some time.
