Thank you for instructing me on what I already know. I have searched thru these pages, and the answer to my question is not clear. There has been lots of discussions about dots and whether people feel the device is worth it, but far little on its actual use and and how it arrives at its various measures.

It's clear that you have to tell the unit what club you are hitting. But, it's less clear whether this information is used just to group the data or for actually making the computations. If the latter, then for the computations to be accurate, the unit would have to be told the loft of the club, not just its number.

@MountainGoat, this answers your question. The club selection helps with spin ranges when not using dots. You can hit 3k rpm wedges without dots in driver mode.

If you don't want people to repeat things you already know, you should take the time to tell us what you do know in the original post.

To group the data and to give the unit a better idea of where to look for the ball when it tries to first acquire it after being hit. Exact loft isn't needed nor does it play any part in any calculations or functionality - although it can be added for reference purposes if you want.

Thanks, but comment #1838 doesn't quite capture my concern. I use single length clubs and would like to measure shot distance. Some of these types of units assume your club has a particular loft, and the shot distance is calculated from the assumed launch angle. In the case of single length irons, the lofts are often very different than conventional clubs. Hence, any calculated distance would be wrong because the assumed launch angle is wrong. I once tested a Voice Caddie SC200, and the calculated distance estimates weren't very accurate. I'd hate to invest more than twice as much on a Mevo only to discover that it has the same problem.

You may want to research a bit on the calculated vs measured parameters of Mevo. I can't recall but I believe they measure Launch angle and ball speed along with spin. If that is the case, you can get a pretty accurate representation of ball flight.

Mevo is a radar so it's going to be most accurate outside. It does not use loft, I think you can input loft but it's only for reference and not used in the calculation. If you're outdoors you should be good, it seems the Mevo isn't spot on, but pretty close. Depending on your game pretty close is generally good enough.

Now, if you want spot on numbers for a fraction of the cost, go pay to play a twilight round at the very end of the day where you can't back anybody up. Start dropping balls from various yardages and hit them on up and you can probably figure out your distances a lot more accurately that way and it should cost you under $50. You should be able to get a pretty good idea of how far each club is going with 4-5 shots. Just don't forget to repair your ball marks.
