@scomac2002. Can relate to this wine tasting thing. Mid-July we were North visiting with friends. It was decided that we would do a tasting tour of the wineries in the Traverse City area (Old Mission Peninsula to be exact) that afternoon. Joined by another local couple. Piled into the buds Suburban and off we went. We've done the "tour" before, but it had been long ago. They give you these little snootfuls of wine to sample, and you're suppose to make a determination if you want to drop $35.00 on a bottle. Give me a glass or two and I'll get back with you. Wine "connoisseurs" twirling their glasses, sniffing, holding it up looking at it. Didn't know what I was suppose to do. So I just swilled them down. Seem to pair nicely with the cheese and crackers spread laid out (sarcasm).

Anyhow, was hotter than hades that afternoon. After a couple of stops, drinking warm wine (not big on chilled Chardonnay), pretty much had enough of it all. Would have paid handsomely for a cold beer while on the tour. Tried a hard cider that was chilled. Ciders seem to be a thing nowadays. It was like drinking green apples. Horrible.

The burger and cold beer(s) at Bubba's back in Traverse, after the excursion, was sublime. Color me an unsophisticate.

@Fellaheen51 -- it's ironic you should bring up your particular experience of this summer. At one time i thought I might try my hand at pouring wine at a tasting bar. I've got some contacts, so i suppose I might be able to talk my way into a job, but then that would likely interfere with golf playing time. I just don't know.

That said, it appears that I'd have a bigger stumbling block; that being the insufferable snobs that I would be pouring for and trying to sound knowledgeable! I just don't know whether I could tolerate it even if I had Nicolette cooking for me on every shift. (She runs a cooking school and bistro at the winery she owns. She's quite the character and has been very open about fancying my son. Probably too hot to handle...) >:)

Rumor has it that the wine cellar at ANGC is more valuable

than the golf course. I'd take the golf course.......of course.

> Great stuff @Fellaheen51 ! I like hearing about all my golfmates progress with their games even though i'm not playing as much as I might. My focus is elsewhere at the moment and most likely will continue to be tying up loose ends on the sale and then finishing up the renovation and mulling over future steps with the jungle outside. Today I will be delivering a few household items to a local consignment store in town that trades in home furnishings. We seem to be blending into our new surroundings quite nicely.

>

> What a difference being in a small town versus the big city attitude when dealing with municipal employees. We took a small load of hazardous waste items, mostly paint to the transfer station and were put through the ringer as they claimed we were commercial due to having a trailer attached to my BIL's car. It took an hour and a half to get rid of the stuff and he went over the scale about a half dozen times as he was instructed to go from station to station. No wonder people digs holes and bury the stuff! Conversely, I took 4 boxes of mixed materials -- pool chemicals, spray paint, insecticide and veterinary products to the town's transfer station and was allowed to drop off the whole lot in one location hassle free and without charge. She even welcomed me as a new resident!

>

>

That is where I would get my Stu snarl and inform them that I was a property owning tax paying resident and then inform them they work for me--- I pay your salary---- If they had pulled that commercial crap on me I would have called the Highway Patrol and have them come out and check the registration. Maybe would filed a complaint with the local press.

Can tell you a funny one. I have had the same insurance agent since I have been here. He is a golf bud. Anyhow he switched insurance carriers one year when we renewed. Had someone from Florida with the insurance company call. this bubblehead asked me if my Pickup was a commercial vehicle ? I told her no it was just a little nondescript Dodge Dakota She then asked what this was with me having a commercial license? I told her I had a CDL because I drove a truck for a living. She got further confused. I told her finally forget it I would talk to my agent. I called him and he said what? I said yeah. So switch us back to our old carrier which he did. A few weeks later I got a call from a supervisor / customer service rep. I explained it to him and he said what? too. He wanted me to switch back-- I told him no that any company that hired someone that stupid I refuse to do business with. In fact my agent quit writing policies with that company too. I do not deal well with asinine or stupid people well especially when my money is involved

Color me an unsophisticated too!!! At least I am in good company. BTW ---- I am getting into your leather wrap grip thing on putters. Have done 3 of mine so far all of them 8802 or Ironmaster style. Really like the feel. Have salvaged quite a few leather grips in good shape off of clubs on the yard. I have a boatload of ladies and junior grips for underlisting. Only bought item is the glue which is E-6000 from Wally Mart and it is reasonable

As far as wine tastings and other such snooty nonsense, I just never got interested. Same with cigars, all that stuff about chocolate or coffee overtones, all bull. I've lost most of my sense of smell, and some taste. I recall Mixture no. 79 tasting like perfumed soap. I bought a canister of the pipe tobacco last year, and opened it recently. I could barely taste the tobacco while smoking. I might as well been drawing in air. Probably will quit pipe smoking if my senses don't improve.

Walked 15 holes today. Played ok.

The NoCals are snooty about their wine...............but the best

grapes IMO are the black beauties that they grow in Bakersfield,

which is well south of snootland..........and they don't waste them

on wine, they eat them.

You can find them in grocery stores all over the country from now

until late September. Big, fat tasty crispy seedless black grapes...

best in the world. I buy them over and over until the season ends.

They will scour the crap out of your arteries and make them like

new. The ones with the most oxidized look are the freshest. Don't

buy grapes that don't have that "oxidized" look as they are not

fresh and crisp as a good grape should be and have lost much

of their flavor.

Your welcome :)

I like the line, which is tongue in cheek. My dad did everything himself. Painted the house inside and out, put on a cedar shake roof, dug an exterior french drain and installed the sump system, remodeled the kitchen and bathroom. He was far from incompetent, but that’s what he always said when someone asked why he didn’t hire someone.

Much better with insect repellant, which I didn’t have last year. A longer walk than I remembered from last year, but they let me out at 6:30am and I didn’t see another golfer on the course until I made the turn. Great weather.

Nice wildlife, we usually have some kangaroos, an American we took round a while ago stopped playing several times to take pictures of them. The other one we usually have in the breeding season are nesting birds dive bombing as you go past their nesting trees, they are quite feral and can draw blood.

@tolmij ; I see that you have made it out of the Grille and ventured over to the Classic Golf and Classic Golfers section. Not a bad bunch of guys (and gals on occasion) that reside there. A few of us have been know to pay them a visit and have always been welcomed. No BS and lots of good info on old techniques and even older clubs.

Gonna head up to the club this morning and play in my men's league game. It has been a couple of weeks since I have swung a club so it should be interesting. Time for a me day I say. Besides, it keeps me out of DW's hair as she is on nights this week and needs her sleep.

Fall is a comin' cause man it's cool down here by the lake in the evening (and first thing in the morning!).

Noted that myself this a.m. Acknowledged with a like. Stu, Sco, and myself hang out there with some regularity.

Good luck with the men's league today. Would think it's going to be a nice, refreshing morning with temps similar to here. Which has been very comfortable during the day. Temps at daybreak ~50*. A cool, crispness in the air. Fall is drawing nigh all to quickly. Temps this weekend only in the upper 60's. I love fall, my favorite season. Unfortunately, it serves as prelude to what follows. With this summer having such a slow start (wet and cool well into June), it has been going by entirely to fast.

Thanks for the good wishes. It was a strange round for sure. I had a higher score for three holes than I did for the other six! How often does that happen? I know that it's not something to brag about.

It seems that my second shot is killing me as it was the par 4's that did me in today even with really good drives in play. Two snowmen have a big impact on a scorecard no matter what you do on the rest of the holes.

Tomorrow is the staff tournament and barbeque. It's supposed to rain all day, so I don't know whether we'll play golf or not, but the party is definitely a go. My teammate has informed me that I have to be good for tomorrow as she has made me team captain (why me?). I told her that I would caddy for her and she can take all the shots to which she just scoffed! Maybe it won't matter... That's why they call me Rainman!

After my experience in other golf forums, when I find a friendly place I stay there, looked around other parts of this forum and find them mainly friendly. Thought I would give them a try and remembered Stu always talks about the classic golf guys.

I guess I am missing the gene needed to enjoy fine wine. I think they smell good, but I have never been able to enjoy the taste.

We have been to weddings at winerys, and the only one I remember liking was a blackberry jam flavored one. I think they just ripped a label off a bottle of Boones Farm, cause it tasted more like a fruit juice.

Domestic beers are more to my taste. I prefer Miller Lite, but there are few that I will refuse if they are cold.

I was able to play in the noon game after church yesterday. Managed to break 80 for the 3rd time this year. Shot 79 with 3 doubles, and one bird.

and Winter.

Actually played a round at a muni in Rock Springs and the

weather was great.....warm.....and the forecast was for snow

the next day. We didn't hang around to find out.

The staff tournament and barbeque turned out to be much ado about nothing as the clubhouse staff had no interest in playing, so the golf portion was canceled despite the rains having ended by mid afternoon. That said, it was pretty soggy in the parking lot, so maybe they had more rain than I experienced down here by the lake.

The barbeque did however go as planned and the early start meant that the bar got going with more gusto than usual. No one did anything embarassing, but it was nice to see a bit different side to a few of the clubhouse girls with a couple of drinks to loosen up the inhibitions and the tunes playing at party levels. It was a good night despite the demographic mis-match -- old farts and college girls. It was good to see a couple of the long timers come out who have been MIA due to health issues this year. One is dealing with cancer and the other has a torn up shoulder and a knee in need of replacement.

I guess I didn't say that very well. There was nothing to see as the old farts pushed together a couple of tables and sat and drank beer while discussing what old farts discuss. The girls on the other hand were up dancing and laughing and generally having a good time, but it was like two separate gatherings. There was even a half hearted effort to get a game of giant Jenga going, but that seemd to fall on deaf ears, so it wasn't like there wasn't an effort made to get a bit of interaction going.

I've been there a long time. I've seen a lot of girls come and go. Unless they're there for more than a year you don't really get to know them. I would say that there have been three over the years that I was fond of, but they were always the more outgoing type and they all worked there several seasons.

The last week of August is picked for the staff bbq because that often marks the last week that the girls who are going back to school work, so it makes for a nice send-off. From this point on Brenda and Laurie will handle the workload from Monday to Friday with Christine coming in for mornings on the weekend. It ends up that all three work seven days a week in the fall as Christine works fulltime in another position. No wonder they take the winter off and go some place warm for a couple of months.

A few of us have been know to pay them a visit and have always been welcomed. No BS and lots of good info on old techniques and even older clubs.

Yep that is a great bunch of folks over there. If you are a classic guy like I am you will always learn something. I have really learned a lot over the years about clubs made and sold across the pond in like Scotland and the UK. Also for me a lot of the posts or photos bring back pleasant memories

Two young businessmen in Florida were sitting down for a

break in their soon to be new store in the shopping mall. As

yet the store's merchandise wasn't in ---only a few shelves

and display racks set up

One said to the other "I'll bet that any minute now some

senior is going to walk by, put his face to the window and

ask what we're selling." Sure enough, just a moment later,

a curious senior gentleman walked up to the window, looked

around intensely and rapped on the glass, then in a loud voice

asked "What are you selling here?"

One of the men then replied sarcastically "We're selling a**holes"

Without skipping a beat the old timer said "You must be doing

well. Only two left."

Don't mess with seniors.........................

I know where you are coming from, there’s nothing better than being able to engage the younger set in conversation. We use a pharmacy and all the staff are young ladies, all of them are my friends as I laugh and joke with them every time I go in which is once a week. The manager a 20 something lady has a sister who I think would be an ideal wife for my son, that’s without seeing her but she has all the other attributes I know would be right for him, I give her a hard time every time I see her trying to set up a date, the whole shop is now involved, causes great hilarity.

Took the fam on a short 5 day trip to Port Austin, MI. At the tip of the "thumb" here in Michigan, on the shore of Lake Huron. Bit on the cool side (low 70's) and swimming in the lake is bracing do to the cool water temps. But everyone is enjoying themselves. Lodging is right on the beach, and a nice pool for everyone to get wet. Two block walk into town for shopping and the donut shop. This morning, sitting outside with my cup of coffee, taking in the sunrise. And later in the morning walking the breakwall.
