Your latest "shot that keeps you coming back"

BeerPerHole

Recommended Posts

For those of us who aren't the WRXers who hit every shot perfectly there is that one "shot that keeps us coming back". We talk about it with out buddies when it happens. We hate the crummy shots. So - what was the last "one that will keep you coming back" shot? I had one late yesterday out playing "hit-and-giggle" while keeping myself alive with cold IPA. It was one of those where you're paired with a guy who doesn't know you but thinks you must be a ringer...until a few more holes go buy, anyway. What was yours? I expect this thread to have a long life as people report in...

Not that I would actually follow through with giving the clubs a rest but it was creeping in last week, chipped in a 30 ft shot on 17, though it was an average shot it sure saved my sanity and was back at it the next day .

On Saturday a gentleman in the group in front of us made an ace on a par 3 with a really difficult to reach pin with a tree blocking part of the green.

On Sunday, same hole, I lofted an 8i over the tree and my ball mark was 1 inch to the right of his. The ball rolled about an inch right of the cup and settled 8 inches away.

I had a handful during last Saturday's round - it was my best round of the year - but ONE stands out.

17, a 380ish yard par 4 - dogleg right. It'd been a while since I played that hole so I misjudged my tee shot and hit driver ... right through the fairway and under a tree. Get to my ball to see the limbs are hanging JUST high enough, I felt like I could safely get under them from around 120 yards out. Additional challenge ... greenside bunker to carry directly in my line. Two tiered green with the pin cut to on the top back so I figured if I punch a line drive just right, it could catch just over the bunker and slow its roll going up to the top tier.

And boom - punched a little 9 iron pretty much exactly as I needed to. Carried just over the bunker, hit about 1/4 way up the tier but didn't have enough to roll up, so it stayed down below. Still a great shot and the putt barely stayed short. Like, 1/4 more roll and it'd dropped.

Just one of those tough shots you see the pros pull off and are like "Dang!" So I was pretty stoked on that one.

What made me thing of this...Mine was a par 4. I hit a good drive...right into the bunker on the inside elbow of the par 4 dogleg left. My ball was in the sand, behind a tree, no view of the flag. I had to hit a 110 yard high draw around the tree to the flag. Nailed it. Ball landed 3 feet left of the pin and stopped dead. Birdy put dropped. Couldn't help but chuckle...

Couple weeks ago, 18th hole is a 340 yard par 4, water separates the fairway from the green at 280 yards and runs all the way up to the yard of fringe showing. Smoked my drive but took a bad kick to the right and under trees. On my walk up I notice there are people on the clubhouse patio as usual to watch approaches in over the water, so I can feel my pulse kick up slightly desperately trying to forget the time I thinned a wedge into the shingles of the clubhouse. I notice I don't have a shot at the green, so I chip out left to the fairway, nothing special. Then I set up for my approach, I get a little flippy but still put it fairly center green, leaving me an uphill left to right breaker from about 15 feet. I would've been perfectly happy with bogey given the scenario but something about the putt just felt right and I walked it in from about halfway out.

I hit an amazing drive on the closing par 5, left only about 210 to the front of the green. Proceeded to cold top a 3 wood behind the only trees that were in play on the hole. Next shot, hit a low punch hook to the right of one tree, it came back left and missed the other tree, rolled up to about 20 feet. Didn't make the birdie, but just watching that punch knuckleball out of the rough actually curve the way I wanted to was fantastic!

I have been fighting the driver off the tee all season. Got into a good groove, but still was not hitting it great.

The 18th on my local course is my nemesis, it has a great optical illusion where you think you should hit a fade off the tee, but in reality , it's a straight shot. To make matters a little more risky, there is a bunker about 250 out. All season I have been trying to hit a cut shot over that bunker, and my spotty contact has always left me in that bunker, or in the rough around it.

Last round I decided to hit my "usual" draw, aiming it at the right side of the bunker. Took a swing, ball started middle of the bunker, stayed there. "Oh great" I muttered, getting ready to hit a 180 yd bunker shot, again, but the ball kept flying. Over the bunker, over the rough, settling down in the middle of the fairway, 290 yds from the tee. I was flabbergasted, could not believe the ball flew that far, could not believe I had a chance at getting on in regulation.

I parred the hole, first time in forever....

Sunday, #4, 585-yard par 5. Got out of position, and had 180 left for my third shot, from a severe side hill lie, where the ball is almost at eye level, requiring a baseball swing. The hole was cut in the back left corner of the green, over two deep bunkers. I choked up about to the shaft on my 3 hybrid, aimed way right and made a nice half swing. The ball came out hooking sharply of course, ended up hitting the front-middle of the green, and rolling back to kick-in range for birdie.

Drove it just little too far right on a narrow hole. Ended up five feet off the fairway in the rough but with a good lie and even on a slightly upslope. Tree limbs between me and the flag but I had an open shot to the middle of the green if I just skirted past the limbs.

Problem was, it was a full stock 8-iron distance to the hole but there's a bunker in front of the green. So any mishit out of the rough ends up bunkered. And the green pitches away (lower in the back) so hard to make any iron shot from the rough stop without running over the green.

I decided to hit 7-iron to be sure to clear the bunker. Figured it would land on the back half of the green and run just into the short rough. I'd have an uphill chip shot back to the hole. That was the plan.

While the ball was in the air, it felt so pure I had a distinct image of it landing in a certain spot and exactly where it would end up in the rough. When I got to the green, I kid you not, the ball mark was about five feet from the spot I imagined and the ball had rolled about 6" into the first cut of rough exactly like I planned. Easy up and down for par.

It's rare the *feeling* of impact creates such a vivid image of exactly what the ball would do. If I were good enough to hit the ball that purely, say, a dozen times every round I'd have to quit my job and do nothing but play golf every day. What an addictive feeling.

Played a round this past Saturday with a 192yd par 3 with the pin on the back quadrant. Long is in trouble, right leaves a tough pitch uphill and there's a bunker left. The miss is short, but a 3 putt is very possible as there is a big swale in the green leaving you with an uphill putt that's difficult to judge.

I stuck a 5 iron about 3yds long of the pin and just to the right. It was a high draw that landed soft and didn't release much. I missed the birdie, but to hit a 5iron that perfect felt great.

This past Saturday, in round 1 of our club championship. 10th hole, par 5. My third shot from about 85 yards out. Lob wedge that lands about 3 feet beyond the hole, spins backwards and ricochets off the pin. Near eagle.

Most recently it was a little 30 yard pitch that I thought I maybe hit a little thin even though it felt nice. Saw it come out realllly low so I assumed it was a low spin bullet that would run all the way to the back of the green. Hit a couple feet on the green then 2 hop stopped on a dime a few feet from the front pin. We all see those low checkers guys like Jordan do on Tour... Didn't think I'd ever produce one.

In the midweek medal this week I hit my approach shot on a par 3 to 4 feet. I preceeded to miss the putt (just) and then in a moment of frustration (having missed several makable birdie putts that round) I missed the nonchalant tap in also. Picking up that ball and walking to the next tee I realsied why I love golf, in the space of 180 yards I had felt every emotion possible.

As for the shot that brings me back, that missed putt does. I know most people will come back for the one great shot they hit but I always come back and try to hit on less bad shot.

A couple months ago I was playing solo behind a larger group. Just after they left a Par 3 green I hit what I thought was going to be a hole in one. As it was landing I called out, "Can I get a witness!!!" and a couple of them stopped to watch.

They gave a polite golf clap but when I got there I found it had actually come up a good two and half feet short of the hole. I noticed they were still keeping an eye out from the adjacent tee box and I realized now the pressure was on. It would have been embarrassing to go from a presumptive ace to a par (or worse) with a "witness". Fortunately I managed to stab it into the cup.

One of the guys on the tee said, "We were watching to make sure you didn't pick it up". Good to have people keeping you honest!

Yesterday-40 yard bunker shot that was plugged 3 inches from the front lip. Played it kneeling outside of the bunker and produced probably 80+ mph of clubhead speed to fly a high cut to the hole. Made the 6 footer coming back.
