Played behind a BIG hitter yesterday

Our group made the decision to go ahead and put a drive or two in the fairway and relieve some pressure on the long hitters to keep one in play. We saw some incredible drives that day. Several well over 400 yards. The longest was a downhill Par-5 and the guy hit one 471 yards.

They had one of these at my club last year. He was a lefty and the tee he was on was right next to the practice area. I watched about 10 groups go through and boy did he swing hard, but I only saw a single ball come within 25 yards of the fairway and that was when he swung "normal" with a righty club. Overall, it was very anticlimactic and had me laughing with how far off line he was hitting these balls.

Never played with anyone who really hits it 300. I'd say it's pretty rare. Having just got back into golf a few months ago, and being 47, I found my drives carrying about 200 yards and rolling to about 210. Over the past few months I've increased my distance to about 240 purely from better technique and turning properly through and after impact. I believe I am at my useable limit (i.e. on the course). I CAN hit it further on the range but not with any control.. like 250 yds with a range ball, but 1 in 10 within a fairway width. Most people I play with tend to hit it about the same distance I do, or shorter. Distance off the tee is only useful if it's controllable.

Reminds me of a dumb old golf joke:

Bunch of guys are at the range picking teams for their upcoming match. At the range is a Gorilla who hits every drive 400 yards, straight down the middle.

Guy says, I'll take that Gorilla.

First hole: Gorilla pipes it 400 yards onto the green.

Guy is high fiving his buddies.

Get to the green, Gorilla takes out his putter and boom: that putt flies 400 yards.

At a course last year I was on the first hole with a buddy of mine (we both play college baseball). I get it out here pretty good and he hits it further than I do. First hole is pretty short at about 360. I usually just wait until the group ahead is on the green and then tee off.

The starter was having none of that. He told me to tee off when they were only about 270 out. I told him they were in range. He said that “we don’t have all day to wait for miracle shots”. My buddy shook his head and I teed off. My ball landed on the top of one of the carts in the fairway and trampolined off that and actually ended up on the green. I then told the starter my buddy hits it further than me so maybe he should wait. Then I asked him if he would go apologize to that group ahead because I sure as hell wouldn’t have hit if it weren’t for him. And he actually did so that was nice.

Excellent use of that other group's cart to drive the green! Well done!

Starters like that are so annoying. I think next time I will mention that if I hit them and permanently injure them both he and the course will be liable for any damages.

Injuries aside, he's just trying not to do this job. Does it really matter if you waited another 2 minutes for them to get further out (meaning to the starter, not you).

Well there's probably way more people the starter hears say they hit it 270 than ever hit it 270. The starter should take your word for it though and come up with some nice burns for the guys that squirt it 220....

Played in a tourney this weekend. FC hit it greenside on 374 and 362 yard par 4's. Hit a 3W within 30 yards of the 343 yard first hole.

He had a nice smoother hook on a lot of other drives so we averaged about the same.

Beat him by 5 shots because he had NO short game. If I could hit the ball that far, I'd be a plus, easily.

This is a starter who has no clue what he's doing. If you were not as long as you claimed, and you go ahead and hit and come up 10-20 yards short of the group in the fairway, then you just have to go to your ball and wait for the green to clear. Waiting on the tee for a few more minutes changes nothing; you will still have to go to your ball in the fairway and wait for the green to clear, but your wait will be shorter.

The group on the tee should wait until the group in front arrives at the green before they hit. This provides an additional minute or two of space between groups, decreasing compression in the first few holes should a group ahead lose a ball or two and spend several minutes searching.

I don't necessarily do it on courses with a Par 5 first hole but I always wait as you say, until the group ahead reaches the green on a Par 4. All the guys in my usual group feel the same.

It's like we know at some point we'll be waiting on every tee and every fairway. Why be in a hurry to go ahead and do that on the very first hole? Let the group ahead start putting and at least there's a chance the frustration will be put off for a handful of holes ;-)

I've only played one course that had this rule. Super cheap nine hole course on Kauai. The Kukuiolono Golf course. Love that place.

I'll admit, I used to think I hit it further than I actually did. We've all been there. I have always been honest with myself about iron yardage as its necessary for actually getting GIRs. I'd say over the last year or two I've lost a bit on my irons and playing 1 club longer than when I was in my 30s.

Driver tho... decent hits a bit off center are 240-250. Well struck drives are 260-270 with occasional rips at 280. Upgraded to an X shaft this year more for control and getting away from the fishing pole my buddy says I was swinging. I still don't get why 105+ swings and x-stiff shafts don't result in more distance. Guess more middle of club face would help.

Yeesh... never had a starter ever let anyone tee off on #1 without the group in front being on the green. Even if its 400 out. No rush, everyone will catch up. But hitting into the next group on the first tee is super bad juju.

I played Friday with a new member and his son, who played club golf at his D1 university. Big hitter, the son (and dad is no slouch, either). Kid plays to a +3 or so.

He hit driver off almost every tee box. On two of our par 5's (520 and 545), he was about 195 in. Hit 7i into both greens. He drove a 330 yd par 4 w his 3w.

That kid is the biggest hitter I have ever played with.
