new Wilson staff fg tour ball

The compression is just fine. After the ball test from those one guys who were of the opinion the Snell ball was the longest and softer balls are short (or slow) I took the bait and got some MTBX and ordered some FG Tours. Played them both today, the FG is unreal, great ball flight wonderful around the greens, and longer than the mtbx which seemed to fall out of the sky - no hangtime off the driver, Fg was about a club longer in the mid irons. Ss 105mph

For me there is no better ball than the FGTour. Full package, cept cost and availability. Ha!

Also those guys tested the Duo Urethane Professional which I believe are a softer compression than the FG Tour ball. So when they talk about softer balls going shorter maybe they should have tested the FG instead or Put the FG in the stack as well since they put the Tour Soft in with the ProV's

Is it confirmed that the test was with the WS Professional and not the Duo U? They use both names in the report.

FG Tour, think of if as a TP5 or ZStar with a touch softer feel.

I've played this Tour FG ball for a few rounds now and it's a good ball. It has a mid-high penetrating flight off the driver, carries well, even into a stiff wind and releases well. I hit some of my longest drives of season today. It plays very similar to the Srixon Z-Star, but flies a bit lower. Distances are very consistent, it checks well, even into firm greens, spins very well with wedges and is a very consistent smooth ball to putt. I have no problem keeping this ball in the bag.

The big challenge Wilson has with this ball is, although it's very good, it's not easy to find and as a result I like many others will play a ball that is more readily accessible.

Edited to add; This ball is very durable and doesn't show marks as quickly as others.

I always wanted to try the FG balls but, don't ever remember seeing them for sale anywhere. Any way, I found some yellow ones in our local Dunhams for $37 a dozen and figured why not?

This year I have played Pro v's both regular, and x, Bridgestone bxs, and Snell MTB black.

I've played 36 holes with the FG's and the only difference I have noticed is on some full wedge shots, the ball spun back 10 feet past my pitch mark. With the other balls I get a hit hop and stop, or the ball is right at the pitch mark.

Was I just striking the ball unusually pure this weekend, or does it spin more off the irons?

I doubt they are nearly as soft as Wilson claims. They claimed the Duo U was 55 compression but the M G S test measured 88. I believe that Wilson is only reporting the compression of the core. They report the FG Tour as 70. My guess is that it's in the same 100ish range that all the other tour balls are.

That would be my guess too.

I find them to spin a liitle less than ProV1's and a bit more than the Chrome Soft off irons and wedges for me.

The FG tour is one of my favorite balls. Just hard to find retail.

If that's the case, I guess I hit my years quota of pure wedge shots in one afternoon.

It's not unlike shaft torque and how silly it is to rely on manufacturer ratings, since they're all done differently, and frequently in a proprietary fashion.

Wilson is publishing the core compression. The compression from M G S, or GolfBallTest.org, etc, are done with a finished ball. It's possible that's the main difference.

FWIW, GolfBallTest recorded the 2010 version of the FG Tour with a 92 compression, using ATTI. In comparison, the TM Penta was 101, the 2016 TP/TPX were 90/104, 2016 B330/B330-S were 110/91, 2015 Chrome Soft was 80, the ZStar and XV are similar to the Bridgestones, etc, etc. There's a recurring theme there. :)

I think they may have dropped the compression in the most recent FG Tour by a few points, but it's probably pretty close to that 90 level.

edited to add: HackDaddy's FG Tour X was tested at 116. :)

Count me as another who loves the FG Tour, especially the last few editions of it. They tweaked the dimple pattern around a half dozen years ago or so and it suddenly became noticeably better in the wind. It really could do it all, a completely awesome ball.

The Duo U and Duo Pro appear to share those aerodynamics, but aren't quite the ball the FG Tour is.

If you can find them, and they're out there, best value around. IMHO of course. ;)
