My club got a demo set of these this week so I took them out on the course. I have previously built a 2017 p790 6 iron that I love, it's shafted up with the same KBS Tour 120's that are in my Srixon 745's. Now it could very well be an issue of the 105 DG shaft versus a 120 gram shaft, but I just wasn't impressed. In the looks department, they are no question an upgrade over the 2017 version. But when comparing my 1st gen 790 6 iron versus the new one, the 1st gen blew it away in performance. I'm going to try and go hit them with a heavier shaft and see if things change, but they were ballooning badly and just felt firm and harsh. That could have been due to not striking them as well as I was the 1st gen, but the previous version felt better and had a much different ball flight. My 6 iron launches really high, but then has a flat/penetrating flight. Was really wanting to love these, but not the case so far. Hopefully can test with heavier shafts soon.

Checked the new 790 out today...beautiful looking club, definitely a subtle step up from the older version. Not as squat looking at address as the previous gen, cleaner graphics. TM lists these as .25" longer than the '17's but not the case, they were actually a hair shorter than the older version. Didn't hit them though to see if there were any noticeable differences, but just based on looks probably the best looking iron in the store. I'd have to hit them to see if they were worth an upgrade, specifically I would want more spin out of them than the first gen.

Forgot to mention... the new p790 6 iron was 1/4" shorter than my standard length Srixon Z 745 6 iron. Both have a stated length of 37.5", and that's what I measure my 745 at. But when side by side, the 790 is 1/4" shorter. This is also the case when measured. I know companies can vary in how they measure, and that appears to be the case with Srixon and Taylormade at least.

TaylorMade changed its measuring method to a more industry standard method.

When I did the math, I came up with a difference closer to an 1/8 of an inch shorter for 2019 P790 irons vs 2017 P790 irons when both were ordered standard. I’ll check the actual difference when my 2019s arrive.

Totally forgot about these! Are they comparable? If they are I’m all in on the Ti.

Got to love the dink’s on this website. Whatever they did Makes the top line look thinner. Maybe the less offset in long irons/higher toe design/slightly measurable thinner top line makes a big difference.

I think they are designed for most handicaps, especially with the right shaft. I am an 8 handicap, ball striking not a real issue for me as my short game needs a ton of work, but with the proper shaft Inget great ball flight, hold all greens and have never hit a flier.

FYI I have the new 2019 set and have 6 rounds with them already and have nothing bad to report. Two other members at my club were also fitted, one is a 3 and one is a 12 and they both have the same feel as me, just a great set.

If you listen to the Gear Drive pod when Johnny had Paul and Matt from TM on to discuss the P790, it's pretty clear these were originally designed as a player distance iron (maybe 5-15 handicap range), but as they got into development they realized they had something that better players would also use.

I think the range is legitimately +4 to 15. Obviously, the better the player the more likely it is they are a good ball striker, so there must be something else about their game that would drive them to play these. But this iron fits a broad spectrum of players. I don't think it's one that fits neatly in a small bucket of handicaps.

Pulled the trigger on a new set in the plastic I found on WRX 4-Pw. Should be here this Friday it’s showing on the UPS app. Stoked for these. Also found a set of M6 woods, driver 3 wood and 3 hybrid. My ghost has also recently entered the bag benching my Scotty. With the MG2s getting the raving reviews I keep seeing, this could be a 100% Taylormade setup for 2020!

The P790 are difficult to hit in PW,9 and 8 of you are steep. They are great for 5,6 and 7. Combo with 760s is the way to go.

Hit them again last night. Super easy to hit, high ball flight and very straight. My iron game was the worst part of my game this season, so finishing off with these will be nice. Greens in regulation going up!
