Removing a putter shaft- will heat affect finish?

I have a carbon steel putter head that has a beautiful, new black ox finish. I want to remove the putter shaft (don't like the black shaft and I want to make it longer and would prefer not to use an extension). Thoughts on whether or not the heat from a torch will affect the finish?

Yes, a torch can definitely alter the finish color if applied directly. You can get some wet towels and wrap around the hosel and keep the torch moving. Better to use a heat gun in my opinion, less chance of issue. Can also use some topical jelly designed for this process. Can't think of name, sure someone else can chime in on that.

OK, thanks for the reply. I can get a heat gun from work, so guess I'll do that. Was wanting to work on it today, but will be patient. Though I am contemplating removing the entire finish and making it raw/rusty

Wrap a wet rag around the head while using only a heat gun. No torch! You can get a heat stop gel which stops heat transfer but in this case a wet rag will work fine. Also apply heat in short periods of time (like 30-60 seconds) and allow time for the heat to penetrate the hosel. Check if the head is loose and continue the "heat and wait" process until the head breaks loose.
