Talk me into iron fitting or not

So I am about a 10 HC. I Have been playing PING G series irons for 15+ years. Currently have G25’s. Like the look, feel and consistency. Over the last 3 seasons I have probably tried about 10+ irons to see if newer is better. Loft for loft I have not seen any noticeable distance gains (<3 yards). Feel and consistency nothing either. Now to be fair my testing has been real world on the course. Some testing has been with a club or two and some with full sets. My buddy just got fit and is hitting his irons (loft for loft) now about a club and a half longer. In my situation tell me how a fitting would potentially help me when my in course testing has shown no benefits of newer irons. I am looking to upgrade irons but do not want to spend tons of cash without any real benefits.

Lie angle is it half a Colour out eg black and a half vs Red eg your posture changes over life.

Pings are built lite on swing weight..my S58s were D zero or less. I slowly added lead to d2.5ish.Whole new club. SO thats all just basic stuff and then take the new Fitted Clubs for a lesson or two and your good too capitalise on it all for a season or two.

If you hit your irons well, you are probably right in that you aren’t going to see beyond the standard deviations and hence nothing is going to stand out loft for loft. That being said what is the goal? More distance or more consistency? Newer irons should be more consistent across the face, all things being equal. And getting to the same distance but with a better landing angle, especially for a good iron striker, should be a benefit too.

If someone has to talk you into a fitting, I know you’ve already decided you think you know more, and will not oblige.

 

While real on course testing plays a part, unless you are using a launch monitor like Trackman or Gc Quad, I don’t find your tests to be accurate. Could be miss hits, wrong height (apex), land angle, smash factor, or a plethora of wrong things going on you can’t see with the naked eye.

 

On the notion of “loft for loft” I disagree with how you look at it. Loft is not the main reason the ball goes further. Manufacturers have thinned out the faces a ton more, creating more ball speed. With speed comes height and spin, so they’ve HAD to reduce lofts to make sure they Apex at the same/correct height. Of course the spin loft will be lower, which helps it go further, but the main reason is ball speed. Every mph of ball speed equates to 2-3 yards of distance.

 

It really depends on what you’re after- distance or dispersion. Not everyone is about distance. To me it sounds like you already have your mind made up. I went in with an open mind and found clubs I picked up a half/full club with and tightened my dispersion a ton.

If you're dropping cash on new irons I think it's a waste of money not to be professionally fitted. It shouldn't even be questioned.

YoungJedi- I never said I think I know more. That is why a I am asking the question to get some knowledge on the subject. Never said my mind is made up. just trying to get information to decide my next steps. I guess my goal is maybe more distance with same or better dispersion.

The fittings could expose you to a shaft that might help you out. In part it depends on your age.

IF you are 35, you might not find that much. If you are 50 or older, and sometimes feel like you're fighting the shaft, it might be time for a checkup.

 

_Golf Digest_ had an article a few years back on age and shaft flex. It said if you play stiff shafts, you should assess - at age 53 - if you need to go back to regular. The author gave no reason why age 53 was so important, that's just the age he gave.
