Speed without yanking the handle?

The power kind of surprised me from the shoulder rotation and pressure shift. I haven’t had that speed since I saw Monte earlier this year and he had me swinging pretty fast with a 7i.

Anyone else ever felt like you got your shoulders rotating too flat?

I guess today my pivot and arm swing were synchronized better - probably because I tried to be very slow and deliberate in transition.

To me the most challenging part is getting the right amount of hip extension married with the correct amount of left side bend.

Absolutely, even if I do a bunch of reps just holding the club across my shoulders and trying to get the shaft to point at or inside the ball I still struggle with this. I'm not sure how big of a contributor it is, but my trail hip (which in my case is bionic from my hip replacement) lacks a bit of internal rotation and my lead/left hip lacks a bit of external rotation on the backswing, so the flat shoulder plan is probably a cheat to try to get a fuller turn. Which in reality, I do not need. #GolfIsHard

Alright so here’s the deal: my game sucks, my handicap is firmly and consistently trending in the wrong direction and I’ve shot in the 80s most of the last two month. I haven’t practiced at all in 6 months - I’ve only had the desire/time to play.

Summer is almost over in central CA so I’d like to get back to practicing. That being said I’ll only have time to practice for about an hour during the week and then during the weekends I should be able to manage at least a couple of hours outside of playing.

I’ve had a lot going on personally and the summer heat has taken away all motivation to practice. Now I kind of have the bug to get back into it.

This summer I know I’ve been steep (especially with shorter clubs). I’m sick of throwing the clubhead into the turf and hitting 2” behind the ball.

Practice will pick up where I left off - shallowing the club. Here are a few swings from today.

Good to see you back at it. I think the action looks pretty good overall and I like shallowing drill.

I'm fighting fat shots a bit right now too, but more so as a results of working on my pivot to eliminate sway and rotate more around my left leg. That combined with working on a proper wrist hinge/more vertical takeaway has my low point control a bit off.

I’m on the gain 15lbs diet right now.

I think my next course of action is doing an online lesson. Try to get that done this weekend maybe

Save the money and drive to Wisconsin. Pick up DDetts on the way. Let's play some golf

Speed without yanking on the handle? How do others out there generate speed but without yanking from the top?

I’ve always had a bad habit of doing this and it’s back in full force now.

That little drill you were working on in September vid has been gold for me along with better understanding of hips in transition and hitting those 100 yard 8 irons, but I'm not trying to coach. I want to create speed in ways that don't work, and "find" it when I'm doing things that are sequenced and in sync. I'm a Monte guy so not surprising I'd suggest going through some of his Instagram stuff since May - there is some gold in there, but not trying to "sell" it. Just some interesting stuff in there, even recently that may speak to you.

At least you've still got a golf season! I get to rest on my ass/"laurels" all winter, lol.

Just not via pelvic thrusting

I’m a flipping SOB right now. Absolutely no face control. To way miss with a wedge let alone driver.

Seriously could use some time to practice.

That's the most crucial area of the golf swing. The change of direction needs to be soft, particularly in the wrists and hands. If you feel that the wrists and hands tighten up in the transition then you have probably yanked the handle.

> @Buckets2 said:

That's good advice. Hitting from the top is quite natural yet destructive. Arms and wrists need to be soft almost to the point of impact and then you step on the gas well into the followthrough. Being patient during the crucial transition period can be hard to do.

Spent some time at the range last night working on shallowing the club in transition and in order for me to get the feel and movement I really had to soften my grip and forearms. I usually have a Vulcan grip on the club and softening seemed to help a bit.

It’d be interesting to see what my numbers were on trackman. I was hitting 100 yard 9 irons but everything was a strait pull. I was wondering if shallowing and rotating more had shifted my path way left or if I’m so used to flipping that maybe I just kept getting the face closed at impact.

Could either be an over compensation as your body feels like the face is wide open when you shallow so you shut it down to avoid going right....or......your arms are moving too slow/too passive causing the club to flip closed....the latter is my isssue. Whenever I actually work on shallowing the first few are dead pulls until I speed up the arms a touch and then it's back to dead straight.

That all being said....I looked back at your video....are you always bent over that far at the waist at address? Your armpits are over your toes...should be more in line with your knees....bending over than much can shift path left.

I can see what you are saying but to answer your question I am, or at least last night, I was deliberately working on shallowing with wrist action.

Thanks Kurt. I’ll keep that in mind with the arms.

I was actually thinking last night that I was on my toes a bit. That’s kind of my normal setup but I think I’m getting a bit too far from the ball.

anytime...I'm sure as you know....start with the setup first and see how it goes after a couple days. I have the same tendency when I don't practice....standing too far away and bending over too much.

I learned through slow pitch softball to fire the core meaning hips and trunk like a boxer does to generate lots of power vs relying on arms. Not only, if you can do it, will you hit it further then using arms but the accuracy is better also. Learned by watching the best softballers.... you could set the bat all the back before the pitch and just turn on it without letting the arms take over and you'd be surprised how fast you can turn. Now I do it in golf too specially when I gotta drop a bomb...
