I just discovered the 5W!

This spot in my bag has always been taken by either a 2h, 3h, or driving iron. The majority of my golfriends play a driving iron or hybrid. I've never looked into playing one. Let alone, swinging one in a hitting bay. It wasn't until I needed to fill a gap in my Sunday bag and to avoid carrying 14 clubs. Found a great deal on an M4 5w 18 deg and all I could say is WTF??? I shouldve had one bagged since forever ago. A 5w would've made my life so much easier. I struggle to with over cooking hybrids and catching driving irons cleanly pretty often. This M4 5w is easy to hit, longer with a nice high ball flight and very consistent. Highly recommend for those who havent tried.

Put the F9 5 wood in the bag to replace the hybrid this year and have had the same revelation. Stupid easy to hit from the deck into par 5's and automatic on short par 4's.

Something about those rails on the Cobra FWs make me super comfortable with hitting the 5W off the deck. Long, straight, no fuss.

I hit my 5w so well, I am thinking of dropping the 3W and having both a 5w and driving iron. How bout dem apples

I play a 3w, 5w, and 2i. Lots of options.

Ive gamed a 5w off the tee box on and off for the last year as the 3w I had I hit horribly, and my driver was inconsistent.

I dropped my 2-iron and replaced it with a strong 5-wood (18-degrees). It’s versatility is terrific!

I added the 5w earlier this year, and then added a 7w. Great gap fillers for me:

3w @ 240

5w @ 225

7w @ 200

5i @ 185

I totally did that - well, 7W instead of a driving iron - for exactly that reason. I don't even have to try to get a nice high draw with my 5W. So easy to hit well.

 

And I hit my 7W better than I ever hit a 3 iron.

I love my 5 wood so much I hit it every chance I get! Short Par 4 tee, 2nd shots on par 5s, even choke down on long Par 3’s.

Highly recommend. The irony is I feel like a better hybrid striker than FW.

Amen. More people should be playing high-lofted fairway woods instead of driving irons or hybrids, IMO. The problem is that the OEMs have pushed hybrids so hard and so many pros use driving irons.

I love my Tommy Armour Atomic 5-wood. Its an easy, reliable 210-yard club for me.

My cobra 3W and 5W have completely altered my golf game for the better. I have zero issues hitting them off the deck, and they let me threaten long par 4s and par 5s. My short game sometimes lets me down, but I've begun to treat par 5s as a real opportunity for par instead of a real opportunity for triple bogey. : )

The modern day 5 wood is like a 4-wood. I played a 4-wood for years and then PING stopped making them. I got a 5-wood and never looked back. I hit it as hard as my 4-wood. It's a great option for short par 4's and I am as comfortable hitting it off the deck as a 6-iron.

I have pretty much always carried one. I still carry an original great big Bertha titanium. It works like a charm even off the deck.

GBB Heavenwood plays like an older 5-wood for me. 20* loft on a 4-5 wood shaft length. High and far. Not great into the wind but stupid easy and straight most of the time.

Interesting. I have a trusty 17 degree hybrid that has been in the bag for years. I purchased a Mizuno ST180 5 wood recently and I was hitting the snot out of it. I get about the same distance out of it, only higher.

Right now my hybrid is back in the bag, as I have been hitting it well again. Might just mix it up and pop the 5 wood back in for the mid-week round.

The only reason you wouldn’t play a 5 wood is if you’re in the rough a lot or need a driving iron. Hybrids are just so much easier to hit than a 5 wood from the thick stuff.

5w is so much easier to hit off the turf than a 3 wood and what you lose in length you gain in consistancy. The perfect 3w for most people is probably a 5w.
