Anyone Tried a 3 Deep at -1" Length?

Hey guys. I've got an X2 Hot 3 Deep that I'm thinking about shortening by an inch to 42.5". My driver is at 44", so it doesn't make much sense to me to have my 3 wood at 43.5". Anyone ever tried the 3 deep at a shorter length? If so, what were your results? And I will definitely add weight to get the swingweight back to normal. Do you think shortening it would defeat the purpose of its design?

Was going to try something like this with my OG 3 deep 13* but went another direction. Plan was to cut it down a little under 43" but also try a shaft with a little more spin like a blueboard to counteract the low spin nature of the head and loss of spin/height from shorter length. Also tip a little more than usual to account for extra head weight and add control. I think it would have been a great setup but happy with my current setup and trying not to tinker with clubs right now. Interested to hear how it works out, though. Driver is at 45.25" FWIW.

The plan is to pull the Tour Green, tip it a bit, add a 10 gram tip weight, and then butt cut to 42.5" finished length. I may not do the additional tipping though in order to get it to play slightly softer. I might as well just do it. If I don't like it, I can always extend it back to stock length. I think it would be a fun experiment, for sure.

I play my 3 Deep at 42-1/2” without adding weight to the head, but I have an 85 gram shaft in it. Absolute cannon.

I had the original 3 Deep. Originally, it was a driver replacement and I kept it at 43.5. However, after a while I put a driver (at 44) back in the bag so I cut the 3 Deep down to 42.5. I had the stock PXv shaft (6.0) and didn't add any weight back (I also had an X Hot Pro 19* with the same shaft/cut 1 inch, so at least these two clubs had a similar feel).

 

Overall, I think playing it shorter was fine. My issue with this club is that while it's a cannon when swinging well, I don't think it's that much more accurate than a driver given the smaller clubhead/relatively unforgiving design.

Alrighty, I finally got off my butt and did some experimenting with my X2 Hot 3 Deep. I pulled the Tour Green and installed a Dynalite Gold S300 steel shaft in it at 42" playing length. OMG! This is the club I've been trying to find all season. I finally have a weapon that I can hit the fairway with probably at least 80% of the time, unless I really make a horrible swing. It carries about 250 yards, which is what I needed. I decided to try the Dynalite Gold shaft after building an Acer XP905 7 wood with the same shaft model and also being blown away by the results with that club. Now the only graphite shaft in my bag is the HZRDUS yellow in my F7+ driver. Oh well, I guess I'll just be the weirdo playing steel in my fairways (again). I just can't find a combo with a graphite shaft that works nearly as well for me.

 

EDIT: Now I need to find another lightweight steel shaft to try in my M4 3HL. Time to start digging in the shaft cabinet...
