4 Hybrid, 4iron or driving iron gapping

I hit my 22’ 4 hybrid 210ish and 24’ 4 iron about 195ish which I am fine with. But i am thinking about getting a 4 iron replacement with an easier club like a hybrid or a driving iron.

jordan speith uses 718 T-MB 4 iron which is 23 degrees between his 21’ hybrid and t100 5 iron which should be around 28. Is 2’ and 5’ gapping between two clubs ok or normal? Obviously there is no ‘standard’ but just wanted to hear your opinion. Thanks.

Are you just looking for an easier club to hit or better gapping? How far do you hit your 5 iron? You can’t just look at lofts, a lot of manufacturers use loft to get the club to launch in the right window. A 24* hybrid, driving iron and iron will all fly different yardages even though they are the same loft. That’s why you see Jordan Spieth, in your example, have a 2* and a 5* loft gap but on course it’s gapped the way he wants

I hit my 5 iron 185 so i am just looking for an easier replacement of the 4 iron. I guess trying the clubs on the launch monitor is the best way to go.

But i was just worried because most of the 4 driving irons i looked at are 23’. Having a 22’ hybrid and 23’ driving iron beforr 28’ 5 iron doesnt seem right.

Launch monitor would be good but also if you can on the course is always best. Just because the loft is close doesn’t mean it can’t fill the gap, you can also look for a DI close to you 5 iron loft.

If you are looking for an easier club, a 24* or 25* hybrid is probably going to be easier to hit than a driving iron, and probably better for a wider variety of lies. Obviously, your mileage may vary as some people don't like hybrids and hit their irons better, but I would venture to say that if you want a club that is easier to hit than your set 4i, a hybrid is the way to go (or a 9w....).

The thing is my new t100 set hasn’t even arrived yet so I dont know how well I will be hitting the 4iron. If i can hit it consistently, problem fixed. But looking back at my 4iron experiences with my old set, not a lot of good shots. Maybe i will go with a more forgiving iron, not necessarily a driving iron. I am still not 100% comfortable with a 22’ hybrid, and woods are def easier to hit so maybe 9w is a real possibility lol. Lots of clubs to try.

I can relate to this problem. That 4i slot has been the biggest bugbear in my setup for years. I have 4 choices now:

1) The set 4i. depends on the set, but usually I only play the set 4i when I am really confident and hitting the ball well

2) A more GI 4i. Not a bad compromise, but I'm still not used to the transition from the normal irons to bigger head in the 4i

3) 9w (24 degree). Actually a pretty good option, but the ball flies HIGH! It's like a long range pitching wedge. Not good in windy conditions.

4) Hybrid (23 degree). Probably my favourite choice right now, but I did struggle to find one that wouldn't hook. Once I found one I liked, best of the 4 options, IMHO.

I also have experimented with a more specialised driving iron, but never found one I really took to.

What shafts do you have in your current 4i and new T100 set? Your current 4i's form is inconsistent - you miss shots frequently. Maybe a new shaft would help you out. You might softstep the 4i. If new 4i shaft is steel and you also have problems, you also might try a slightly lighter graphite shaft to help with launch.

My CB Pro Tungsten irons come with a 0.370" hosel. I refit my 4i with a hybrid shaft (see below), and the 4i is much more reliable now.

I think it would be wisest to sit tight until you get to know the new iron well enough that you know what you wan the gaps to be.
