quick way to add 1/4" when regripping?

JD3

Recommended Posts

would appreciate any advice from the experienced builders here. i need to regip a wedge and would like to add an 1/4" .. it seems too little to buy an extender or have someone else do, which I would if it were at least 1/2". Is there a simple way to add 1/4" during the regrip process, latter of which I do for myself all the time.

Thanks!

_Normally we use steel shaft extension for steel shafts, but since its only 2/8", we can use a old crappy graphite shaft and make a extension of it and glue it in like it was a steel extension, that also save some weight gain we might not want since graphite is lighter than steel.

For very short extensions. I usually use some old shaft butt cut offs, glued to the old shaft with a wooden dowel that fits the ID of the shaft and that I would hollow out with a drill after installation. With steel, you can actually just use the dowel, you don't even need the cut offs. I've been lucky to find dowels of the right size I need but worst case you get one a bit oversized and sand down. Or a little smaller and use something like fiberglass drywall tape to build it up to the right size.

Any hardware or home improvement store.

1/2" usually is pretty close for most graphite shafts and can be built up for steel. Or 5/8" could be sanded down.

hmmm.....You might have problems to make a snug fit, but the first step from a similar shaft might do, i never done that.

DG goes down about 0.015 to 0.020 on the first step, so measure ID on the shaft butt on the shaft you shall play, and compare to OD on the first step from another. Fiberglass mesh tape might do as shim if needed, its good enough for shaft tips when we use a .355 taper on a .370 hosel.

In what way would you think it needs to be different than the answer I already gave for steel shafts?

I have 5/8" long graphite stub from club that had been butt trimmed earlier. It's a perfect diameter to be crazy glued on end of steel shaft but I don't have the tools to cut it into smaller 1/4" pieces.

you think it's something a hardware store could do for a few $'s?

I just grip up a little further. I used an old wedge shaft from a 58* in my 56* so it's a little shorter than it should be. 1/4" just isn't enough to fuss about to me, especially in a wedge. Otherwise the best way would be extending it properly with a steel extension if you really need that 1/4"... you'll never have to second guess it.

What about just pushing/stuffing something down the end of the grip?

Quick update. Went with wooden dowel from hardware store. Outline of shaft diameter on paper taken to store to fine right size. They sold me about a 24" long one for $5. Hand sanded one end just enough to fit it in and then cut it with an old hand saw. Stuff is so cheap it split in pieces while being sawed which I then glued back together, and super glued it sanded tip down into shaft. Came out about 1/16th" short when pressed in fully which I made up for by topping it up at butt end with double sided tape. Grip went on fine, drying now, don't expect any issues. Feels better already with some gentle "air guitar" swings....I think it added some SW points which it needed a) given length, b) lightness of dowel, and c) standard size grip replacing heavier mid size.

Thanks again for all the helpful input!
