As someone who is ~16 handicap, I know that I need to practice and play more to get better. Not sure how much quality practice I can do here. I really enjoy the fact that it seems like you're secluded and don't see houses from the course. Another downside, though not a deal breaker, is that the facilities are dated in appearance and you don't really get to enjoy anything except the golf. Again, not a deal breaker but something I'm considering. They told me they get ~36,000 rounds per year. I don't know how much this is and how difficult it will be to get a tee time or a walk-up during the week, but I do know that this is higher than some of the other clubs I've looked at.

Same distance/time away as Rivermont (well, it may be about 5 minutes shorter depending on the time of day). Only hesitation here is that my dad is moving back to Georgia in about 2 years and I've considered the idea of switching clubs (unless I'm in love with a club) to play with him weekly. I don't know how quickly I would grow tired of playing the same course for 5+ years in a row. But with their cheap initiation fees and monthly dues, making a switch to here isn't a barrier. They said they get ~26,000 rounds per year

This course is ~10 minutes further away than Pinetree and Rivermont which is really pushing the distance for me (37-45 minutes typically). The biggest hesitation here (aside from the distance) is they seem to be struggling financially. They only have 410 members (16,000 rounds annually -- seemed like I was the only one out on the course when I played which I loved), but the various fees and rates are increasing. Dues are about to increase ~10%, they're about to issue an assessment to members, and when I asked about holding my dues steady for 2 years and whether I could be shielded from assessments for a short period of time, the GM denied that request. The dues are higher here than the other two (not by much though) but the unknown due and assessment increases worry me. Also seems to be an older club (member age) -- not a deal breaker, but something I did notice.

I haven't been back in quite a while and don't know what the cost would be, but I would guess it's more than you said you wanted to spend. They have a small in-town course as well near the north end of the connector, which would be nice as you live in south buckhead. The drawback for you is the drive north. I found that you hit traffic if you tried to get there in the afternoon. Makes the trip north a day-trip. I'm sure it's only gotten worse. I think you'll face that problem with all the north-side courses.

Ansley is $70k, but that gets you access to both Ansley and Settindown Creek golf courses. Settindown only (but allow use of the Ansley clubhouse dining) is $30k initiation.

They should fall in the Intermediate categories under either name. It'd be $40k (~28 years old) or $48k (~31 years old) depending on if they go under his wife or his name. Full membership is $70k+, you are correct there. (my numbers are a little more than a year old, so I could be off, but Ansley has historically had a very good intermediate program)

Yes, you are correct. I forgot about his age and the membership for younger members. I used to be on the membership committee, but it has been about 4 years since I dropped off the committee and I have not kept up with it as much. Thank you for the clarification to my statements.

Full membership is $70k+, you are correct there. (my numbers are a little more than a year old, so I could be off, but Ansley has historically had a very good intermediate program)

No worries! I have been looking at pulling the trigger there and been on the fence for a while. I've just hit the last of the intermediates, so I know that I will need to make a decision and get on the waitlist if I end up going there. The 9-hole mid-town course is about as much fun as you can have playing golf in Atlanta. I love it. I know there are other people on here who are lurking and following, so without giving too much away on the process and pricing, I thought it might help if they knew where the initiations stood before contacting the club or not even bothering. You have two awesome facilities and in my opinion one of the absolute best superintendents around. I can't think of too many times where I've been to either golf course in great shape (especially with the change in the grass on the greens a few years ago).

What are your thoughts on TPC and what it costs? I'm moving to Atlanta in a few months and would be interested in joining somewhere for the right price if it offers the right features. Things that are important to me are a good course, preferably with more than 18 holes and really good practice facilities, plus proximity to Midtown. I'd like to find better players to play with, but I'm not a big gambler (think a dollar or two skins max). Clubhouse, restaurants, etc. don't matter to me at all. My wife likely would rarely visit the course anyhow and the apartment we're moving to has a great fitness center and pool.

Places I've considered are Ansley, Capital City, Druid Hills so far, but I'm hesitant to commit to those because I'm not sure I'll be in Atlanta permanently and it would hurt to just lose the $50,000 initiation fee if we end up moving in 5-6 years. Because of that, my price points would be about $20,000 initiation and up to $600 per month. It would also be nice to have good reciprocity with course in other cities, particularly Memphis as my family is there (hence the question about TPC). I'm 27 too, so should qualify for whatever Young Associate memberships are offered.

TPC Sugarloaf? I think they would be north of 20k and also well north of Midtown.

You're gonna have to look north of town for that low of an initiation even at your age.

Think Dunwoody, Indian Hills, Horseshoe Bend, Rivermont, Roswell CC. Maybe Cherokee CC but I think they have a waiting list right now.

A few of those listed would be well below your budget and probably worth a little drive.

All have what you're looking for except proximity to home.

Take a look at Rivermont. It is a great course and not much money to join. However, their practice facility is lacking...but the course is great. Another lower-priced option is Berkley Hills. Not as good of a course as Rivermont, but the practice facility is better.

Ill agree with Rivermont. I used to be a member at Berkeley and while its an awesome course with great members, its location from midtown could be a stretch.

Cherokee is 70k initiation, so it's out, but great practice and two really good 18 hole layouts. Monthly is almost 800, and they do have a waiting list. Skip Indian Hills, not a great course and bad practice facilities, plus membership is packed and tee times are in short supply. Dunwoody not great practice facility, but pretty good. I think their initiation is roughly 30k and the golf course is very good after redesign by Bergin.

Roswell has a horrible practice facility as well, and the course is blah. Normally in very good shape though. Horseshoe Bend I have heard good things about, but I have never played it.

If the areas right near 400 and 285 is your limit for traveling then I would lean towards either Dunwoody(based on what I have seen) or Horseshoe(based on what I have heard)

Pinetree up in Kennesaw is out of your range distance wise, but there is a reason two Georgia Amateur golfers of the year are members there and the guy who won the Georgia Senior Am and finished second in the GA Senior open is also a member. They have also held more GSGA events than any course in Georgia(have heard this from a GSGA member, but cannot find anything official to back it up). The Cleveland/Srixon tour rep is a member there as well and brings his guys to the club often because, again, the course is magnificent. Saw Keegan and Rocco Mediate out there last year.

Country Club of the South might be an option. It is just up from Rivermont, has a great clubhouse, normally immaculate course conditions, above average practice areas. Being a club corp course I am imagining it is under 20k init and around 700 per month. My boss is a member and he loves it. He said it does not suffer from the normal Clubcorp issues he had heard of.

I forget there are quite a few non GSGA events, like the Georgia Senior Open, aren't GSGA events, so it may have been a member talking. Or I may have been drinking, or who knows what else. However a quick glance, it appears East Lake holds the GSGA record.

You are correct though, one thing I have seen is that handicaps established at Pinetree always travel very well.

I'm a member of Club Corp and I have to say that I'm very pleased with the Amenities and Golf Services that are offered. Plus I do enjoy having an opportunity to play other courses not only in the Atlanta area but also when I travel (only pay Cart fees.) As many have mentioned earlier lots of choices, it's really up to you and what you are truly looking for in a club.

They indeed are refurbishing and Phase 1 is close to completion and they adding a small gym. The Bar area looks nice and so offers good potential. We've been social members for a couple of years and just have upgraded to full as I'm getting back to golf (did my first 9 there on Sunday, lost a few balls!, really enjoyed it).

For me it's 2 mins from home so I can hit the range on a whim.

So for anyone who is considering Pinetree but is concerned re: the distance outside of town, the new I-75 express lane has an exit at Big Shanty Road and from there the club is about 5 minutes away. I work fairly close to the new Braves Stadium. My guess is after work I could get to Pinetree faster than I could get to any other club around including Atlanta Country Club or Indian Hills. Just FYI.

The 75 express lanes make Pinetree very desirable as far as speed of reaching it. The only ones that might be the same from Braves Stadium area would be Chastain, Bobby Jones, Dogwood, Indian and Atlanta. Chastain and Dogwood are not in the same ballpark as far as quality, and Bobby Jones is full of slow play and packed. Atlanta and Indian Hills are close as well, but Indian Hills is overrun with members(all of the folks I know say unless you are a member of a long standing group tee times are hard to come by) and the course isn't comparable to Pinetree. Atlanta is super pricey and I believe they have a waiting list as well.

I'm also interested in joining somewhere and am between Horseshoe Bend CC and Country Club of Roswell. HBCC is super impressive, but I'm trying to get a feel for the social aspects and if there any many groups of guys under 40 who are playing out there. Any insight?

Did you ever join either of these? Thanks. Looking at both right now.

Hi all - just moved to the Kennesaw area and closest clubs to me are Brookstone and Marietta CC. Obviously two very different clubs but would be interested to get any updated views on either (condition, tee time availability, practice facilities). Any other clubs I should consider? Proximity is a high priority for me so I can get in 9 holes before I start work or after work in the summers.

I live close enough to Brookstone to throw a ball and hit the fairway so I joined them. I've been happy with the course, but the Tee sheet has been quite busy this year, but I've never had an issue. I can't speak to Marietta as I've never played it yet. The Brookstone club does have a nice social atmosphere. They've just lost the GM and so not sure how that will play out yet.

Best Kept Secret in  the "Atlanta Area' is Cartersville Country Club and its close enough to Kennesaw/Acworth

It is definitely a hidden gem, but it is WAY out there for most people in metro Atlanta. It’s also really affordable. I’m a member of one of the top privates in town, but I considered joining just to go up and play it every now and then.
