Who can hit a Gary Woodland-like stinger here?

IMO you need 3 things to hit this specific shot well:

1. moderately high club head speed -- IMO this shot is best for someone who swings 110+ with driver

2. very low dynamic loft

3. relatively shallow angle of attack

Multitude of ways to accomplish the second two. Some are more ideal than others. #2 is most important because high club head speed is always going to lend itself to launching the ball high in the air. Difficult to do #3 with a back ball position.

man, his swing is mesmerizing and that ball flight is ridiculous. thanks for sharing!

separately and slightly OT -- is his downswing steeper than his backswing? tough for me to tell because his club head is going so darn fast it practically disappears on the downswing. :D

completely agree based on my very limited experience with this shot.

teeing it higher up makes it easier to shallow with a back ball position imho, but as you can see in the 2nd video i shared it's difficult for me to hit it straight with a back ball position and relatively shallow attack. that was a push hook with a smooth 2-iron. it's really fun to hit and looks neat on video but could be easy to hook off the face of the planet with a little adrenaline.

further up in the stance seems like a safer way to hit the stinger.

I don't care what pros do or don't do. When dealing with wind and need a boring cheater low-mid 215+yard shot or there's a tree with low-hanging branches between me and the green, I use my version of a stinger and 6i - 2i. Used one of these shots last weekend. My buddy thought I was stymied and going to punch out. I pulled 3 iron and executed a low shot that went under branches then climbed and carried to reach the green.

I put the ball in the middle to somewhat back in my stance, feet a bit closer together than normal, and stand a bit more upright with partial weight on the inside of the left foot and choke down on the club. I take the club back 3/4's and come down and through the ball making sure sweep it and not to deloft, keeping the clubhead moving forward and finish low but above the waistline, NOT a full wrap-around. Typically, shot height isn't much more than 20' off the turf and boring, distance depends on chosen iron and yardage I need to cover.

Monte, would you describe your approach as similar to Scott Stallings' approach? I keep thinking about what you said about the set up and people not thinking they could hit a ball low from it...

I've seen it in person at a clinic - I think he had a 4i for the swing, I asked him to hit one about head high and he hit a low bullet that was probably 20-30ft apex.

There are similarities to the Stallings' video -ball is definitely forward in stance. Pretty sure Monte hit the 4i with our group too!

Tee it up like 1.5 inches or so.

This is a great method to clank it out there. I didn’t tee it up 1.5”, but I used to do similar things with a 2 iron. It works, but the sound and feel it makes hitting it high on the face does not instil confidence on upcoming iron shots off the turf.

I much prefer hitting off a tiny tee, with ball in centre of the stance, and hitting with a shallow, downward path. Easier to control > @Pepperturbo said:

Pepper, have you ever made a post that doesn’t contain a humble brag or outright brag? Just curious ;)

Have you ever answered an OP question, directly, with an example and not thought it some sort of brag? Don't answer that... Probably not as your predisposed bias distorts comprehension. I'd say have a good day, but you'd distort that as well. lol

I have pretty high swing speed so when I top a driver it stays pretty low and crawls out there 150 - 175ish. Might not be a textbook stinger but it stays low.

I know you’re trying to sound smart, but everyone has “predisposed bias”. It’s how our brains make quick decisions. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. “Distort comprehension” is a weird way of saying perception, which everyone does differently. When every single one of your posts is about some form of being an excellent golfer or rich, I don’t know, for some reason I perceive it as bragging. Mighty strange isn’t it?

I might also suggest using examples that aren’t just about you. This also lends to the “bias” that people on the site feel about you being a braggart.

Yes, I can directly answer questions. Gary Woodland is the only person who can play that shot. Nobody else can hit it that low, that consistent, that well, with that much speed.

in all fairness, OP did ask WRX members to share their stingers/info about how they hit 'em. this is the type of thread where i hope people would feel comfortable tooting their own horn by sharing a video of them hitting an awesome shot and so forth. and by "so forth" i mean they should also feel comfortable sharing their trashy stinger like i did earlier. :D

separately, and with all due respect -- i know you guys have been here a lot longer than i have, but... -- perhaps you could sort out your personal issues via private message instead of in this thread? i really don't feel this thread is the appropriate place to criticize another member unless you're offering constructive criticism of their stinger technique. let's please keep this thread fun, alright?
