If you could buy a set that saved you more than ten strokes...

:D oh man, that's harsh! Well at least it's leading in something in your mind, I aim to please.

I don't know, I think some guys aren't getting it, but it seemed like a big revelation when I thought of it in terms of understanding my own sick obsession and motivations with the game, lol. Personally I want to know my swing performs under pressure, not my equipment, and I wouldn't want a game that completely fell apart when I played any other clubs. For me, I think it's fully owning my swing and skills that I'm chasing, not score, which probably has a lot to do with my twisted relationship with the game, and why my handicap hasn't changed in over a decade.

>

The original question is different from the one posed here. Magically and suddenly being 10 strokes better does not in any way solve all of a player's headaches. I'm generally around a 4 or 5 handicap, and I've had players of lesser skill say "It must be fun to play that well". I tell them that I'm just the same as them. I have good days and bad days, I hit a few good shots on my bad days, and a few bad shots on my good days. My definitions of good and bad are different, but I have the same kinds of headaches. Magically being 10 strokes would be fun for a few rounds, but then we'd learn that the only thing changed is the score, not the fun or the frustration. My scores now run from say 70 to 85, and I don't like the ones over 80. If my scores changed, 60 to 75, I'd hate the ones over 70.

Where it would matter, Dave, is for someone who shoots 100+ and loses two sleeves of balls per round. Even after the thrill wore off, I'd think if he could play something close to bogey golf and finish with the same ball he started with most rounds his golf "quality of life" would be much improved.

But for you main point I totally agree. I don't want to get carried away with my personal biography here but I went through a phase of a couple years really going down the rabbit hole of twice a month lessons, going out in the back yard every morning to do swing drills, joining a gym and working with a golf-specific personal trainer, skipping rounds of golf to practice instead, the whole shooting match.

Don't recall exact numbers but index did a nose-dive from 21 or 22 down to 13.something in about an 18-month span. But I was no happier with my "usual game" shooting in the 80's than I was when I was shooting in the 90's and I hated the gym, hated the driving range and wanted to just get back to playing golf. So now I'm back up to a 17-18 index and just playing golf every single day it's physically possible. I'm happy.

I can play my Cleveland HB hybrid set or my W/S FG 17 blades and it won’t vary a stroke or two either way. My scores are due to MY inconsistency off the tee and around the green. I’m gone 28 days and then home 28 days, it’s a work cycle. I play with a group of retirees and enjoy being out. Being out does beat working I tell them. I’m looking at retirement in 5 years so maybe then I’ll be able to devote more time to my game. Being gone for 28 days puts a strain on dividing time between my golf and home life in general, tar work etc that needs tending to. I’m currently a 11 HC. Would like to get in single digits and keep it there. I have the ability it’s just time consuming and hard at the present. I thoroughly enjoy just being out on the course. Instead of the range on our normal rounds, I’ll head off to a green and chip, putt, and drop balls at 100-125 yards and practice that way instead of just beating balls. Use to none of the group hit balls before our morning rounds but now they all do but 1. Just enjoy yourself unless you’re playing golf for a living!

This is a great point to ask by OP!

I think the same thing in a different way when I see a YT review or WRX comment about how they dont like the look of a club but its great to hit BUT they wont go with it cause of the looks alone.

I'm thinking play the club and get over yourself already.... its even worse when its just for aesthetic looks like anyone else cares about your club's looks lol

Can't figure how to like my own posts

I play Ping G's, which are great clubs but are about as shovel as I want to get. If those new clubs looked like Maltby Gliders, thats a bit over the top.

Instead, you could keep your current set, play the forward tees & pick up 6’ gimme putts.

Then you would have more time to enjoy:

- Going to the library and finding facts via encyclopedia vs Google

- Going to the post office to mail a letter vs email or text

- Using your abacus vs Excel

Some inventions make our lives easier & more enjoyable.

This question was easy for me to identify with because I bought an old T-zoid Pro II 2-iron on ebay and played with it for the first time yesterday. I did not expect to be able to hit it straight, but my results were great. Since I obviously shouldn't be able to hit a 2-iron better than a 3 or 4 (I didn't have a 2 with my old set), I figured it must be the weighting or club design. So I'm not spending $150 to avoid 10 strokes worth of learning, but rather to match clubs more appropriately to my abilities/style. I'm sure there's a flaw somewhere in my logic and it's mostly in my head, but what's in your head counts too.
