Callaway Jaws MD5 wedges: 56, 58-degree in-hand looks

What price were the MD4's when they came out? Also $160? Or are they charging more for the MD5?

I see MD4's at $109 now, but not sure if it's discounted or not

I hit the 58 today on GC Quad with Pro V1s. It felt really good and literally shredded the ball with full shots. I also hit the TaylorMade MG2 58 and my own Vokey. The Cally and the Vokey were nearly identical in spin numbers (note: my Vokey is bent to 59, so it’s one degree weaker than both of the other wedges). My Vokey spun the most (which makes sense considering the loft), but the Callaway almost spun as much. The TM spun about 500 rpms less.

 

Overall, the new MD 5 looks great, felt really nice, and spun as advertised.

Might have to do with earlier model Callaway wedges not selling many of the low or high lofts to left handers. Right now on Callaway Preowned, the **left-handed MD4 Chrome wedges number about 100** - and 32 are "like new." Most are going for $92 or less.

 

Whatever the reason, there's quite a few dead spaces for lefties in the **Jaws** matrix. It's easier to describe the models they do have:

You have left-handed wedges in 52°/10, 54°/10 and 56°/10, all with S-grind. Nothing in 58°.

In lob-land lefties get some density:

* 60°/8 C-grind

* 60°/8 LW-grind

* 60°/10 S-grind

* 60°/12 W-grind

* 60°/12 X-grind

I ordered a 58 with Recoil smack wrap stiff 78 gram. With this shaft you get much more feeling of the head through the swing. Currently in my bag pm grind 54 and 60. I find that after a year and a half use , they loose a of thei abaility to spin the ball. Please give me some thought about getting new wedges every one - two years to maintain spin?

I found the opposite results comparing the MD5’s to my MG2’s. The Callaway’s spun almost 1000 rpm’s less on full shots but was about even on chips and pitches. Guess it all depends on the golfer

 

Regardless of spin numbers, I found the MD5’s to be very consistent and the head profile is near perfect. I love love love how Callaway made the wedges have a progressive profile depending on the loft, the gap wedges look absolutely outstanding.

Did anyone try the low bounce W in this?  I am between that and the C grind.  Also want to compare the C grind in md5 to C grind in md4 from address.  A buddy picked up a MD4 C a few months back and I have loved the shape and feel since.  I would order that but they are no longer available so I am looking for the low bounce W or C comparisons in the MD5.  Any help would be appreciated.

The low w is basically just a wedge grind that will do a tad better on full swing and ok in bunkers. Its just going to give you a little more forgiveness then lets say the s grind or c grind. The c grind i find is great for around the greens or medium to hard turf. Soft turf and full swings it can get too diggy to me hence the being a touch less forgiving. I have a mack daddy forged thats a c grind 60 degree and it works wonders around greens. The w low bounce should should be more of a all arounder type.

Why is there nothing under 54deg? Are we expecting standard wedges (not full face) to run alongside these. Like TM with MG and hi toe
